Thread: El Sketchbook
April 15th, 2007 #1
Alright, well this is my first time to post any type of sketchbook on the internet, and I'll have to admit that after seeing some of the other sketchbooks I am humbled. If you stop by feel free to make comments or critiques. Both are welcome.
I will have more later, but for now I am posting drawings I did during class on 8.5x11.
This was a concept I did for a mod for half-life. It is supposed to be a type of Combine Master Chief.
Okay, I am confused on a few things. One is the attachement of images, and how I should go about doing that, and how I give this thread a small icon to the left of the name in the "SKETCHBOOKS" forum.

If you want to attach pictures, click the small Attachment Manager symbol. A new window pops up and from there you can upload your pictures. When you have finished uploading, close the window and click the small Attachment Manager symbol again. From there you can select which image to insert into the text. When you attach a picture, the first one you attach appears as a small thumb next to you thread.
I like the demon in the fourth pic. What happened with the mod? Can you post a link? Nice start! Let us see some loose sketches!

Here is some more stuff. This is about as loose as I get, although I wish I had devoted more time to studying still life's and cloth and water, especially color.

Here is a concept I am working on for the Creature of the week. Not really sure if I want those ears or not.

WhiteC: Thanks man. Which proportions are off in which sketches? If you are talking about the Master Chief looking character I ran out of space while drawing him on the paper, so his legs are uncharacteristically short lol. Any advice you can give on the anatomy of the other drawings would definitely be welcome.
Thanks also ChaoticKnight.
Both of you guys have some awesome sketchbooks.

This is the end result of the longhorn studies above.

These are the first two renditions of an exoskeleton idea I had for a story I am writing. When I was finished I realized they looked incredibly similar to Master Chief from Halo, and I was a little disappointed, but I still think they hold some unique quality to them. The little vehicle on the side was supposed to be an equipment/communications carrier (and proportionally a little larger). The second picture is supposed to be the captain's suit, and hence is a little heavier armored. Does anyone know where I could watch some good painting or photoshop tutorials?

This is a dude I was doing for the cover of a friend's book, but every time I try to color him I completely screw it up. Anyone have some useful tips on painting?

Started to paint the arms and legs.

Just some more stuff.

I have a really hard time giving symmetry to the faces. My hand is too unsteady.

This is a drawing I am working on for a chow. His right hand is messed up...and I wish he looked more dramatic somehow. Any comments?

Thought I 'd check out your sketchbook and say hi and thanks for your nice comments from the Minos CHOW round. I'm not sure if I have a style yet, but would like to get one.
Keep up the sketching it's a great way to improve your skills, It would be great to see your progress over the next few pages. As for the Herald WIP... I really like the way you started the horse it has a good shape and structure to it. The herald's right hand looks a little small, thumb seems a bit long and fingers look too same or symmetrical. As for something dramatic, have you looked up any reference on renaissance equestrian sculptures? Hope this helps out. I'll look for your final herald in the burning. Speaking of which I 'd better get motoring on my sketch.

Thanks dabble. I appreciate the feedback. I wish you had a sketchbook or something so I could see some more of your stuff.

good stuff man!! definately keep posting and keep drawing! draw as much as you can and as much from life as you can, it translates. hit the books to and get what you can from them too!
December 10th, 2007 #20
Thanks a lot man. I have seen your website and your comments mean a lot.
This is the final entry I did for the chow competition. It never occurred to me until later just how big he was. ...and I am afraid he looks like another painting done sixty years ago...but if nobody sees it, than maybe I am just paranoid.

February 9th, 2008 #24

February 9th, 2008 #25
cool stuff u got here mate... my only advice is you should work more on facial anatomy and proportions! it will help you a lot in the character design! the bull painting is beautiful!!!! both the longhorn it self and the area around him very pretty paintings + good colors!
April 8th, 2008 #26
More doodling. Nothing special, 'cept the bottom one were some spearhead concepts I came up with for a friend.

I don't know if anyone reads George Martin, but this drawing was inspired by Aegon.
