We don't know much about this squid since it's an extremely rare species and has only been observed in arctic waters. It only has four arms and it seems like it never feeds. It keeps drifting around and can be mistaken to be dead, but it can move, in fact it seems like it's neither living nor dead.

This picture along with some scattered notes by Cathryn Bradshaw (Ship owner Randolf Bradshaw's daughter),are the only remain of the expedition.
    Picture :
Some unlucky zoologist, part of the Normann-Bradshaw expedition, wandering a bit too far north, just stumbled upon Guul'Gulla Qat't, the Undead
Keeper of the northern haven where **** The Unspeakable lies for ages, waiting...
The poor guy's only discovery : Crosses don't seem to bother this specie.
    Cathryn Bradshaw's notes :
They're all dead, the Beast killed them all...
Killed! It would have been my chance, they were slaughtered by the creature, but it spared my life. Now that I know, I wish it didn't...
I can hear **** calling for me. I can hardly resist...
I understand now that it's not **** that wants me to carry its descendants. Guul'Gulla Qat't is old, it will not last eternally, protecting ****.
I feel them... Thank god I cant remember clearly the night they were conceived. But, all those nightmares.
I just have enough strength to crawl to the edge of the cliff. I must end my life along with the one growing in my womb...

The people of the north have learned to make the most of the animals they kill. Meat for food, bones for tools, and hides for warmth. The elders warned them not to kill for sport, for they knew of the horrors that would rise when the spirits took revenge for the waste. The undead beasts would come to eat the flesh of man, grind their teeth on his bones, and leave behind his empty shell as an example to the rest.

This creature feeds on others that are near death. Traveling slowly under sheets of ice, when it senses a weakened animal on the surface it breaks through using its huge horn and knocks the animal in the water. It then consumes its prey in one fell swoop. Inside the beast the dead animal's spirit is separated from the corpse and leaves the creature though the holes on its back, while the creature receives energy from the separation process.

Long ago, the 500 Nations of Natives in North America protested the cultural and physical invasion of the ever consuming Whites. Their peaceful demonstrations took the form of a deeply powerful ritual that translates roughly to: Ghost Dance.
Hundreds and hundreds were killed to cease their cries for help to the earth. Many people from many tribes suffered for their insolence. 153 fell at Wounded Knee, most of them were women and children. Yet still the hopeful Natives danced.
Eventually, after years of nothing, they stopped. Even now believing the earth had not heard them, in their most dire hour.
    They were wrong.

    Report #125.67
We have discovered an amazing ape in the frozen wastes!! We have named him The Kimboid.
This creature seems to have a unique and interesting way of surviving the harshest of weather conditions. During the worst of these conditions the back and shoulders of the Kimboid grow strange crystalized forms, the body of the Kimboid then seems to 'decay', after only a very few short hours.. quite astounding!
Even more astounding is that the creature seems to be literally dead (yes, dead!), BUT can and will move around as normal. These aren't simple motor actions that the creature is peforming.. it thinks and takes advanced actions.
We tested it's abilities by leaving food wired with an electrical trap. Not only did it manage to recognise the danger but it also managed to disarm it using rocks thrown from a distance... clever Kimboid.
We managed to capture one of the beasts and have tested it's flesh and examined the cells to see how they react to the weather. It really is quite incredible that these creatures seem to go into an 'undeath' state, that's the only word I can think of for this amazing process, and once the weather has abated they revert to their normal ape form.. quite simply an amazing creature.
As a final note, I do think we should try to keep the wraps on this, we don't want the military coming up here hoping to find their latest black budget weapon.
    Over and out

    concept:

This large predator plays host to colonies of powerful micro organisms, similar to mitochondria, who live in harmony with the beast. At least until it dies. When the host's natural life expires, the microbes animate the carcass, sending the undead frame on a violent rampage where it will attack any nearby creature. The aim of this behaviour is not to kill, but to provoke a confrontation in which the host carcass will be attacked and ultimately devoured, allowing the microbe colonies to pass to a new host.
The microbes survive during the animation of their dead host by absorbing the beast's flesh, with an effect similar to accelerated decomposition as shown in the image.

    The Jugmug
Jugmugs are undead beasts roaming the arctic plains of the north. Even though it's technically no longer alive, the immense cold of its habitat will freeze the jugmug's limbs solid because of its poor protection against it, making it stiff as a statue for the rest of eternity. To prevent such a boring fate, the jugmug has the ability to harvest souls and transform them into heat, thus allowing it to continue its pointless roaming as it pleases. The stored souls also turn the jugmug into a lantern of bones, tricking lost wanderers in the arctic night into thinking it's a far-away cottage. "An excellent source for more souls to reap," perhaps the jugmug would say if it could talk. But it can't.

The grim polar mare is a large predator known for eating polar bears and other animals normally thought to be at the top of the food chain. Unigue to animals in the arctic region the grim polar mare prefers to hunt at night under the light of a full moon. Due to its hunting preferences it must spend weeks in hibernation waiting for the next full moon. During the hibernation phase the creatures essentially 'dies' to the point of slowing its heart beat to once a minute. The polar mare not only uses this time to conserve energy but also to catch prey foolish enough to mistake it for a rotting carcasses. The ploy is made more believable due to the creatures unique physiology of wearing parts of its skeleton on the outside of its body. Short brown hair covers its skin giving the appearance of flayed rotting carcasses and its saliva is blood red and gives off an odor of death. Its advised to avoid the grim polar mare, living or dead, and to stay in doors during the full moon.

Citizens, the treasure of the North, our proudness, the legendary Arctic Undead, is disappearing !
Because of the inaction of the government, the ice of arctic is melting and with it the habitat of this poor beast. We must preserve this creature as a witness of History, as a victim of the 2021’s nuclear accident. We must mobilise the entire population, because this little undead isn’t intelligent enough to protest.
Go down in the street, cry your anger, save what was once beautiful lab rats.

Gelu vulgivagus, the Frozen wanderers, are quite common, however in most cases are harmless. Their nocturnal lifestyle tends to remove these shambling beasts from the casual observer. While the cold environment does wonders for keeping flesh from rotting, the frequent Ice Ages and glaciations are quite hard on them. Locked in ice and at the mercy of shifting glaciers, a Gelu is just as likely to lose an arm or chunks of hair, as being unceremoniously dumped into the ocean and sent adrift. If sent to the open sea, upon thawing the animals are usually scavenged by ocean predators (they cannot swim), or fated to rot under the equatorial sun.

The undead mammoth is the guardian of the mammoth cemetary, if anybody disturbs or loots the sanctuary, he will take violent measures. The mammoth guardian iself was killed when icicles fell upon him in a sacret Inuit shaman's cave. The magic that surrounds the cave was absorbed in the icicles and transfered to the unlucky mammoth, making him a walking undead creature, destined to watch over the dead mammoths for as long as the magic will keep his body 'alive'.

Bag of Bones- BoB for short: This creature earned its name from appearance alone. it's long slender body mainly consisting of miniscule layers of worn muscle, thin patches of fur and a whole lot of bone. Not only was this bone constructed from it's original body, but also the many creatures it had encountered on its lonely journey. Due to the fact that BoB's body is slowly deteriorating, it needs to asymilate matter from other living creatures. The arctic is fairly barren, so it's difficult for BoB to find a good meal anywhere and when it does find a victim, it usually lures them over with its own carcass.
It's unknown as to how this creature came to be. Most scientists or adventurers who encountered the Bag of Bones met with a most unfortunate fate.

    concept:

These feline ancient creatures were tamed by the population of a long forgotten city on what today is known as the arctic region. When the meteor which killed the dinosaurs hit the Earth, the ocean currents changed the climate. The natural flora and animals dwindled as the days went by. As the regional resources grew sparse and the governments succumbed due to corruption, the city went into civil war. The situation grew even direr and cannibalism became the only way to survive. Dark arts and rituals were practiced on the carcasses and ultimately the secret of necromancy was broken. A selected few who knew of this gained immense powers and slaughtered the few inhabitants that remained living in hidden coves throughout the ruined city. The population was decimated and creatures such as this who were quite formidable hunters were used to track them down. You could call it a survival trait to seek out masters supplying them with meat instead of starving to death, which ironically turned them into undead. When the climate changed, the arctic region was entombed in an everlasting winter. The city sunk deep within in the ice and only small pockets of clear space remained of the city streets and halls. In these pockets the lingering undead hone their skills and wait for the ice to melt once again.
The species original name is forgotten but they are known as ‘Stalkers’ in the few records that acknowledge their existence. The beasts are with their strong upper body and long limbs excellent predators that can make fast dashes if needed to. With 5 eyes and keen senses they can spot or smell prey from great distances. The two tails allows them unsurpassed agility and balance when hunting. Their veins no longer hold blood but dark and virulent poisons which cause its targets to degenerate at tremendous speed. This is by all means a magical creature that remains animated with necromancy and it does no longer need to feed or breathe. Its sole purpose is now to guard its masters and prey on whatever creatures that finds their way into the vast frozen city.

    Vaktu
The Vaktu comes from an ancient time when the shape of the earth's continents were unrecognizable to the ones of the present. In those days, Vaktu walked the earth as proud beast-gods, worshiped by the lost tribe of the Kazayan. After the great war, the face of the earth changed forever, and what used to be the holy land of the Kazayan were now the cold Northern Glaciers.
The Vaktu belonged to a family of beasts that are now referred to as the "highest echelon of reanimation" in necromancy. Many necromancers train decades in order to raise these beast-gods from their slumber. Raising a Vaktu from the dead not only required years of training, but also demanded that the necromancer traveled to the ends of the earth, to summon them from their icy graves. Because of the high level of difficulty in summoning these beasts, many necromancers lose control of their creatures, leaving the Northern Glaciers full of Vaktu free to destroy anything in it's path.

The leviathan was once a great beast of the ancient oceans. It became so powerful it gained an immortal soul, and lived forever. The beast was grew too powerful, so much so that the "Divine Powers" had to seal it within an icy prison, now known as the polar ice caps.
An eternity passed, and the beast was still imprisoned. It's body became decrpid and skeletal, yet it still lived on.
The "Divine Powers" never thought that anything will be able to thaw out the Leviathan's icy prison, however, thanks to global warming, this all became a truth. The Leviathan roams free now, although thanks to rotting, it no longer has fins or flippers for it to swim great distances, so instead of terrorising humanity, the Leviathan passes its time (eternity) terrorising schools of unwitting fish, and the occasional polar bear.

Only after many years of intergration with the creatures it was discovered that they were feeding on weak and defenceless members of the tribes, children, eldery and frail alike. While completey docile by day these beings showed an evil side at night, stealthily seeking out their prey. Missing persons were put down to folklore and myth and it took decades for the parasites to be discovered for what they really were.
Rounded up collectively by all the tribes they were cursed and banished to the arctic wastelands, where they still reside today, not dead but then not living either.

    GIANT UNDEAD POLAR WYRM
"Vikings from the times old tell stories about a horrible creature monster that dwells in far north, where sea is no more, but ice, infinite ice and coldness. The story says there were two ships sent on a journey to west, both carrying brave warriors. As they reached the great ice sea, the ship that was closer to the shore suddenly blew the horn. Wondering what could be the problem in this god-forsaken land the others turned only to see a thing from their nightmares. They watched in dead silence, as would soon their comrades be, as the huge worm-like creature with its cadaverous torn flesh sprung out from the ice, screamed a sky-ripping sound and crashed on the drakar. As the insanity filled the sailor's hearts, berserkers knew no fear. With the last breath in their lungs they screamed:'Oden, guide my hand" and rushed in certain death. Yes, place awaits you by the Odens side, in great Valhalla for you died an honourable death."
The giant polar worm is an abberation from the times of gods and giants. Having fought on the side of the defeated giants, they were cursed to carve it's destiny in ice, killing instinct driven by insanity not hunger.

The polairon is a giant beast with a very special ability. It is able to lie lifeless inside of an icy tomb for up to a millennium. Unique reanimating cells within the beast's bones are triggered by unexplained forces at the end of every millenium and bring the beast back to life. The cells are capable of fully regenerating the lifeless skeleton. The polairon only remains on the surface for one year before retreating to its den. While on the surface it feeds constantly, making sure it stores enough fuel for its unique cells to withstand another thousand years.

Other than them being extremely communal with packs the size of around fifteen to twenty, we didn't see them as too unusual. That is, until we discovered their ancestral burial grounds. When a Ceni senses death, it heads towards this place. When enough of them have decayed and buried, a chunk of ice emerges with a re-assembled Bone Shambler. It's the honest-to-holy-crap-undead. This is one of the reasons why there are so few of them left to be found on our planet.
The newly discovered creatures are of a nature that we have a hard time explaining. In fact, no one has been able to determine excactly how they are able to
move and retain consciousness at all. The few scientists who've had the chance to study one, say that it seems that the head and body of the creature are in two
completely different stages of animation. The head appears to be in a later stage than the rest of the body, often found in decay or even further down the line to the point
at which it's just a cranium without any sign of organic tissue. This interesting discovery suggests that the animal has some kind of extremely complex cellular structure, apparently allowing it's body to maintain connection with bodyparts that have died.

    concept:

The Churrumaiz was recently discovered frozen deep within the arctic ice while massive amounts of radioactive material were being buried. No attempt was made to remove the Churrumaiz remains since the radioactive material was very hazardous. On a second attempt to bury more material, the workers noticed that there was an eerie glow coming from below. After that, communication was lost with the workers. The Churrumaiz' body had a reaction with the radioactive material (ala ninja turtles). It no longer had control of itself, going on a rampage and killing every person in the facility above its burial place.

    concept:
    Spline Squid
    Loligo Spinalis
The Spline Squid is leads a very secluded existence. They are creatures without a life force of their own, and are only capable of travelling very small distances. Some would go so far as to claim they are never really alive. They prey upon freshly deceased arctic creatures. They take over the host body and form a symbiose with the dead carcass. Spinal Squid have tentacles that grow into the dead body like roots of a tree. With these tentacles they make tiny electric currents to control the rotting muscles. The spinal squids slowly drain the last bits of energy that are left in the decaying bodies. When they have used it all up, they look for a new host to infest. The favorite prey of the undead squid is the polar bear. They prefer to travel with this prey in an upright fashion, making them almost human like in their motion. Some believe that this is the real reason of the many Yeti sightings.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    artist: Straniero
    concept:
    Helvalr
The myth of the Helvalr has survived among sailors and fisherman from the ancient Norse and Inuit legends. Grizzled sea-dogs to this day spook young crewmen with stories of a glowing, skeletal beast who wears a shroud of flesh as if to mock the living.
The appearance of “Hel’s Whale” resembles the physical shape and size of a malnourished Narwhal, while differing in color and markings. Many ancient myths surrounding the artic species may in fact be attributable to this undead being. The Narwhal’s nickname “moon whale” may in fact come from the unsettling glow that surrounds its undead counterpart. Additionally, magic powers once associated with the tusk of the Narwhal were more likely the result of experimentation with the tusk of the Helvalr. Scientists and researchers still refute the claims of sailors, saying this beast at best is nothing more then a common Narwhal or Beluga Whale viewed under the moonlight, or at worst a figment of an addled imagination after too much drink during a 6 month winter.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    artist: yoitisi
    concept:
    The Manigohr
This race has long since died out. They vanished from the earth after the last serious ice age and weren't seen again until lately. Apparantly some necromancers favor this creature to aid them in their search for new material to work with. Their thick layer of fur, in life able to protect them against the most viciously cold winds, helps them from freezing solid in the after-death. Their soul, dragged back by the necromancer from the Plains of Death, is bound within it's dead body and burns with a strange sort of fire, which provides just enough heat to make sure it can keep moving in the coldest of places. Their immense strength gives them the ability to drag even the biggest of bones and skulls back from the cold wastes of the arctic regions to the necromancers stronghold. Sometimes Inuit hunters spot a necromancer with a couple of Manigohr, puppets and more undead minions in their quest to gather the remains of ancient monsters frozen in the ice of the arctic lands.

    concept:

On January 15th, 2093 polar bears were officially declared extinct by the World Wildlife Federation. The collective unconcious was ridden with guilt over the loss of the largest land predator. Everyone knew that we were to blame.
Three months later the world rejoyced as a small group of the bears were sighted in northern Canada. The joy was short lived however as the bears appeared to be actively seeking human populations. At twice their normal hieght and virtualy immune to firearms, they were nearly imposible to stop. Even more alarming, those few that actually survived being mauled began to act strange as well...

    Unhappy

Hey Foz - Disapointed to see that mine didn't make the poll despite, imo, being technically better than some of my previous entries that made it. Thought I'd improved a bit with this one, where did I go wrong?

given a number of concepts that did go to the poll compared to some that did not, i'd really like to know what constitutes a "character."

I'd really like to know aswell, concidering it was my first entry.
If it didn't pass the quality check then I'd really like to know what I need to improve, especially concidering some concepts that went through...

I was fully aware of the fact that my first atempt in this might not go through, but I was really hoping for a reason given, as to improve myself for the next time...

I'd like, as well, to be given a reason or constructive critics about my entry. I'm not angry about it, just dissappointed not to know, after looking at accepted entries, what is the quality standard.

It's who you want me to be... or not.

I voted for Marco Mazzoni because, goddamn, those colors are sweet. I don't even know how you did that. So nice.

Other favorites are ATAnderson, SprayNation (love that angle and pose), Matt Dixon and Frostdrake (really liked the lighting and whispy bits of hair).

    Nice job guys.

Dang yo. Great entries across the board, but my vote went to Matt Dixon. Solid piece. Great color and execution. My hero .
Close seconds Penumbra and Lolow. Although, with Lolow I had a problem with the creatures hand in the foreground. It needs to have stronger contrast to seperate from the creature's body. Otherwise, solid .

I can definitely see where some of the entries fit the "character" definition as opposed to the "species" and I respect Fozzy's decision. But, those same entries wouldn't be accepted in the CHOW thread because they are essentially a creature. As far as I can tell, the entries that were submitted in the initial thread fit the requirements of the COW specifications, specifically non-humanoid, no accessories, etc. Does the fact that a creature can not reproduce in the traditional sense (in reference to the species rule) disqulify it from the poll? Does any one feel that adhering to this rule limits the creation of new and different concpets? After all, many creatures in mythology are not species yet one could argue that they are not characters either.

I'm not trying to undermine Fozzy's rules. I just thought it would be interesting to present the topic for friendly debate.

By the way, I voted for Lolow. Excellent lighting effects and creature design.

Voted lolow.... great undead mood and raw force. Nice colours and light too. (rather humanoid, but monkeys must be ok, right)

    Also strong imo were:
    Blk C
    Vegas M...Always powerful stuff...calm down dude ,
ATAnderson...nice bloody scene, could use a calmer frame though
Danjaw...love the mood, but make it bigger (if you have time..you'll learn more)
Jakkas...for an undead version of the mashmallowman .

    and on..and on... strong round!

My vote goes to Lolow! great pic, like the "gorilla stance" on the guy and the color scheme!

The only crit is that i think that the pic should show more (or less) temprature. So you can feel how cold that place is, and how hard the ice is. Maybe more contrast and reflections will help?

Killer pic though, I hope that you will keep posting here!

    Marco Mazzoni: Awesome pic.

I voted for Lowlow. His creature was the shit.

I was definitely disappointed to see my creature didn't make the cut. It was a demon from hell. Upon rereading my discription it maybe sounded too close to a character. I was going for a mythological creature of sorts. Much like what Grendal Grack was saying. Does a creature of mythical or magical origin not work here? If this is the case I need to rethink my entry for Cupid's pet on the next one.

On the other hand maybe mine just sucked... I am going to cry in my pillow now.

I was torn between MattDixon and Lolow, and ended up voting for Matt. Both were extremely well rendered, but Matt clinched the vote. I really loved the teeth and gums in Matt's piece.

Thanks for the votes so far guys!

Dammmn! so many nice entries.. pity I can only vote for one

    really liked the following:

Matt Dixon: Like the way you have rendered the face, the teeth the eyes everything… crazy looking expression!

cannibalcandy: Cool story, nice rendering style and colours, the bloated flesh is a nice touch.

Miss A: A clean rendering style with some nice details, I like the concept behind the creature. It also freaks me out because it looks like your creature is excreting a small dog

Lolow: One of my favs, mad colours n pose and really well rendered. Nice level of detail on the creature and I like the green vapour stuff.

Marco Mazzoni: Great pose, colours and details, the chunks of flesh from the exit wound is so cool, as is the gash on the knee and the falling snow.

SprayNation: I like the rendering style, the vein like details and the overall creature design, but the fact that it was so different is what sold it for me.

I voted for Lolow, the amount and precision of anatomical details are amazing...

CannibalCandy: I really like your creature but preferred the "encounter" kind of look from the previous version

By the way booth of yours presentations were really great!
