    Unhappy Thumbnails?

    Hi. I'm kind of a beginner artist, I do a lot of pencil sketches and things like that, and eventually I want to start doing digital drawing/painting, and 3-D animation.

    I was just wondering, (for sketching), what exactly the "thumbnail stages" were. I'm not too familiar with this term and I was wondering if someone could explain how this work and give me tips on how to do it, because I hear it's very good for composition and like, "planning ahead" for sketches.

    Could someone explain?

    This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine. Without my signature I am nothing, without me, my signature is nothing.

    The biggest mistake artists of all skill levels make is not doing enough thumbnails and other preparatory work.

    I think in his DVD, Syd Mead must do something like 60 thumbs and comp roughs for the painting he demos. Or more. It's kind of staggering.

    The composition is the important thing, get that working well and everything else will be easier.

    Thumbs = easy, quick to do, no real investment of time or effort.

    Finals = rendering, time consuming.

    Get the first part right before wasting time rendering a really crap picture.

    /2p worth.
