    Blu's sketchy adventures! Updated 4/15/07

Hi everyone. Figured I'd give this sketchbook thing a go. Some background info on me: I've drawn since I was a little kid, but just gradually fell out of it in high school. I think a lack of decent art classes in the curriculum had a lot to do with it. So now I'm trying to get back into it and keep improving my technique and maybe even refine my style (or find my style, for that matter). Therefore critques are much appreciated!

First is just a sketch from the imagination. The rest are from observation.

Figure drawing session. The model was absent for this session, so the monitor was gracious enough to strike a few poses.

Figure drawing session I went to this morning. Yay, we had our model this time. Quickie poses (5 min) and then a long pose (1 hour+)

Pretty good start to a decent sketch book I would say... how nice of your monitor to pose for you!

You have some nice lines happening in your drawings, keep at it and lets see more...

Thanks Looped_Warrior and InFlame for the comments. Much appreciated

Ok, so I started this darn sketchbook and then I've hardly added anything to it. I've been participating in an anatomy study group (see link in my sig) and that's been going well, but I didn't really think I should post that stuff here too. SO! I decided I needed to update and got to work.

Did a self portrait which.......eh........didn't come out the way I hoped it would. But whatever, I'll post it anyway. The left eye is too big compared to the right, and the forehead came out too small. And....I think the nose is too small. haha Anyway, critiques/suggestions are more than welcome!

Hi. It was nice to run into you at the life drawing group today - made me feel not quite so much the interloper.

The hands you postd above are quite good. I need to do more of that. Suggestions fort he self portrait, other than what you already mentioned, would be to add one or two highlights to the eyes and tone down the shading on the philtrum. Not that there isn't a shading difference there, but the lighting change seems a little sudden to me. I'll definitely check back.

Take a look at my series of in-depth critiques, like this one of Salvador Dali's hidden portrait of Lincoln.

Scott's Sketchbook: Check out my sketchbook. Will swap C&Cs.

Thanks for the crit Scott. Yeah, my rendering is definitely something I'm striving to improve (along with just about everything else, haha). I will keep that in mind for the next SP.

So, update time! Yay! Went to another drawing session this morning (scottmcd was there too!). I think it went well. Definitely starting to get more comfortable w/ figure drawing (still a long way to go though). Argh, why are men so hard to draw?! I guess I'm more comfortable drawing women because, y'know, I am one, so I'm a bit more familiar with our anatomy I suppose.

Quickie gestures first. Ignore the eye-placement on the 4th one please

More Ugh, got very lazy with his braids. I'm not a very patient person, so I certainly did not have the patience to fully render his braids. That and I had spent so much time on the face that I had to rush through what was left (i.e. the braids).
