    Yo son, you're killing it with these enviros! Great work! One thought: watch your edges. In some of these you're making scribbly marks where more solid, thought-out shapes (even if they are still abstract) would serve you better. The scribbles create visual noise as opposed to defining form.

    These are great concepts though and I like the depth of field in them. Keep kicking ass CK!

    Heya Carl,

    Nice job on the study!
    The imaginary piece is great too. Some crazy perspective going on there. If I had one crit though, it would be that there's too much black in the piece. Gives it that typical look of overlay/colour/curves layers etc being used to colour a greyscale image.
    I'd usually do a couple passes of opaque painting layers over an image if I start out in greyscale.
    Hope that helps...of course to get a good colour sense you just have to do more studies, which you are doing, so keep it up!

    Btw...what books on perspective have you been reading? That's something I need to tackle myself...

    Hey Mc2mc2: I totally agree with you on the darks. Thanks for the tips! Check out the link below for the book that helped me the most with my perspective studies. It's called "Perspective for Comicbook Artists" and it's a super easy read in the form of comic panels and images for every kind of perspective trick!

    tsukasaxen: Ha... i'm new to colour myself. I can only offer the advice that I've used myself, which to start simple and slowly get more and more complex. Start with a still life like an apple, or onion. I know they are boring as... but the skills you learn here are going to be transferable to your imaginative pieces. Imagine a creature with onion type skin.

    AmbientChroma: Most def come to the sketchgroup! New peeps are always welcome, and it's super chilled.

    i tried doing another imaginative in colour; but failed miserably... so back to studies. Here's the weekend's scribbles so far. From ref.

    Holy crap dude, level up much? Those enviro studies are awesome.

    The only thing that stands out as a bit odd-looking is the grass in the first one though. Other than that, they are brilliant.

    Studies are looking good!!!! I agree that the grass one looks a bit weird. One thing that struck me was the lack of the light's colour on the clouds. The light looks to be kinda yellow-ish and the clouds are all white.... maybe I'm wrong...

    erilaz: dammit.... i can't believe I got busted for painting lazy grass..

    braintree: thanks heaps. Checked out your sketch book too! Sweet sweet colour studies. that repin study is great, keep it up.

    Pixie trick: dammit.... with you guys around I'm really going to have to watch myself. Better clouds too next time.. I promise.

    Delmar: thanks Andi, I'm taking a little break from characters and i'm finding it really refreshing. Enviros are a lot looser for me, and I'm actually having fun learning the anatomy of trees and rocks.


    Here's some rough, rough value sketches I did today. Went back to some books about painting nature and understanding composition. Great exercise, doesn't take long to do and I learnt a lot about the options I have when creating a piece.

    These are all the same scene with 3 main tones shifted about to give a different mood and highlight to each piece. They are all possible scenarios in reality depending on time of day and lighing.

    The top row have the light value in the Background.
    The middle row have the light value in the Foreground, with the dark value either in the mid, or background.
    The last row has the light value in the mid ground highlighting the bridge element.

    In your opinion, which is the most dynamic composition? I would pick two of the above but, I want to see which you would pick before I tell you which I did.

    This is a great exercise. I'm going to try it one day I thinks.

    i'm a fan of the top row and bottom right. they have the most interesting lighting out of all of them at the moment, especially with the subject matter and composition. that's my opinion anyways. they're looking great! i can't wait to see what comes out of them

    Pixie Trick: I'm not sure which one I like, I can see great pictures coming out of all of them depending on what kind of story I want to tell; dark and moody, bridge ambush, maybe thrown some characters in the extreme foreground and have a bit of fun.

    Hey Lalai! Thanks for stopping by! I'm looking forward to playing with this concept too. I was stuck in a rut of everything darker at the FG, then fading off with atmospheric fog... BORING!!!

    So in an attempt to get away from my computer, I decided to start watercolour studies. Here's some tests and and digital doodle too.

    Cant remember if I've commented on you sb yet, but yer man good stuff you keep making me think of think of things that i always forget or ignore in my own work, like tone control and compositional tone control. How do you control your grays when you paint them in photoshop like do you take note on what percentage of greys you put down, i seem to always pick whatever greys are darker or lighter and not care about what percentage of each i use in the entire painting.

    also tell me what you know about colour or else ill have to use force, we have ways of making you talk.....

    stormrider85: thanks dude. I find myself going back to basics every couple of months and remembering something that I've forgotten. Make any decisions on art school yet? Colour is slowly coming to me... i suggest a simple life study to start with; an onion worked for me.

    brinkman: yo yo!! fashion studies are sweeeeeet as. Watch project runway and you'll get inspired to do character concepts in a second.
