    wooohooo I can finally comment. Everytime I clicked on this sb I get logged out. (and I can't remember my password)

    I just wanted to say that the sketchbook pages look better in real life Knox!

    Last image, his right forearm has strong highlights. The lamp is directly over it, but the outer areas could get an overlap of the light also, perhaps?

    Hey Ed. I was thinking that exact same thing after I left that sketch alone for a couple of days. "those forearms look a little funny". thanks for re-enforcing

    You've done an amazing amount of studies! Really like the color study and the value studies. The zombie dude looks cool but his "previous version" lacks facial structure - steal some from your badass facial studies! Love the composition of the new painting of the woman walking dogs. Pushing the perspective on her right hand to make it come forward more might help with her proportions.

    Cool stuff man! love that 1915/present day piece (haha that's a cool idea)

    I think that if you'll paint at a higher res, we'll see less brushstrokes/pixels (they seem to pop out here and there)

    So I'm trying my hand at redesigning the well known characters from the Grimm brothers; Red Riding Hood. Yes I know it's been done to death, but I'm going to do it better.

    Here's the first stage: Thumbnails. I did dozens of these lil guys, and I really should have done hundreds more; hell I still might, but this marks the pushing off down the river without a paddle. Come join me, the water is great

    Love the transparency in the t-shirt. Nice touch. She has interesting proportions, but the style actually kind of works for that.

    Is she actually going to have some red in her, or is that more of a character trait?

    Hey Martin! Wow... i thought I was all alone in here. Not sure where the red will be yet. Have to make sure she works as a silhouette and a value piece, then I'll design the colours in the next phase. Could be her helmet, her hair... we'll see.

    Dude, that onion is a killer. I meant it looks kickass. So is the apple and the pear. These are great! If you are having trouble with skintone for any reason, just do a similar study of your hand or your friend's face, or study from a painting whose color you really like.

    The character designs are cool. Watch out for the proportions of the last girl though. Her head looks a bit too small. The hand of the first girl could stand to be larger too, especially the one swinging forward and is closer to the camera. Keep up the awesome work!

    okay.... so in an attempt to understand and use colour from imagination; I've been watching some tutorials, and reading a tonne of books... and have decided to try my hand again at a split complimentary colour palette. The best way to understand something is to try and teach it... so if it's already been done here on CA I don't care...

    For those of you that want to follow along, look at your still life, portrait or landscape, figure out what you want your dominated colour to be, and from there you pick to 2 colours either side of the complimentary colour of your dominate colour. eg: you're going to do a red painting? find the complimentary (green) and split either side; you choose blue green, and yellow green.

    I played around mixing some palettes together to show you want I mean.



    Here's that old Obama caricature I did a while back with the palette I used. You'll notice there isn't any red or green in this image. The closest I got was an orange in his cheeks made up from mixing my Yellow/Orange and Violet.




    The split complimentary palettes means you don't mix too many primary colours into your painting and that you always use at least 1 tertiary, making your painting more rich and interesting. Reading Loomis the other night and he said: there are a few instances where the picture is at fault because the color is too grey [....] but a more common fault is there is too much color.

    So now to put into practice again... this time from life and not a photographic reference. I'll let you know how I go.

    Hey man, love your digi color stuff and your characters.
    Thanks for rolling by, I am currently practicing as much anatomy as I can
    in-between my classes. Characters are definitely on my agenda,
    just when I get comfortable with the human form, or perhaps
    when I feel like pushing it. I shouldn't wait too long, I know.

    Man I love your apples, Pears, and onion paintings. Can you give me some tips on
    how you paint those because that is really what I need, some help on gaining
    the knowledge of how to use painter or whatever to paint fruit that looks real.
    Still lifes fascinate me - and of course characters and people do too. I think I
    feel comfortable with black and white - pencil because that is mostly what I've done
    my drawings with. I've done some color studies but I am trying to keep my focus on
    learning proportion, form, and value/tone. I think the onion is fantastic.

    I definitely don't think that the still lifes are boring at all. Keep up the great work. I'll
    keep stopping by. I like what you do here man.

    I like your tough, ass kicking, ass shaking female characters

    I'm sure its a stylistic choice but my only crit is many of them are curvey figures with match stick anorexia arms and narrow shoulders. The effect it has when I first looked at the characters is that rather than it looking slender and feminine it looks like they have bad posture and are slouching which contradicts the tough ass kicking image they seem to give off. I think in some places the arms are too short as well, possibly because you are keeping them in proportion to how thin they are.

    I love hot chick with dogs, a real cinematic feel!
