THE BLACK QUEEN
THE BLACK QUEENOriginally Posted by cakeypigdog
The year is 2025. The Black Queen is the figure-head of the British- Japanese empire known as the GBNR.
The GBNR are one of 3 super-states at constant warfare with each other. It is the hundredth year since the forming of these states. Our queen is a divine leader as well as a military commander.
Her appearance should bring together Victorian and traditional Japanese aesthetics but also take into account the 100 years that have passed since the joining of these two cultures.
1 = divine leader
2 = military commander
3 = victorian&japanese mix 100 years later.
Make sure your picture contains these - you will receive 3 VOTES for each topic covered.

Welcome to the newcommers!
The fact that we had SO manny new people on the board it's the reason i went easy. Hell - i had to modify the forum settings since the polls were not accepting more then 30 images.
Now... the custom here is to select for the poll ONLY the finished entries AND only the ones within a respectable quality level.
The level is set up by the guest - yet.. i will take the rights to make small adjustments.
Today - one entry was added despite the request - i figured out that Moreuvian_lx9 posted his final after Cakey sent me his list.
Ussualy... we need to cut entries. It's just like the pitch for a job.
I will ask the winners to consider the quality level.
If you're out the poll - you get some critics - so.. it's a better gain IMO.
Thank you again for being part of this. I'm not sure if any of you has clicked the banner above - those T-shirts are realy cool - and the money it's for the bandwidh
I like this round - Poshspice is aiming one more step to the top in chowscars - now that a great battle is ahead at the top.
MarcoMazzoni is catching up with his last week entry.
He's our host this week - so.. beware!
Let's rock an droll over some cool pics.
DON'T FORGET YOUR PRIZE! THE WINNER OF THIS ROUND WILL SELECT THE TOPIC OF THE NEXT ONE!
And will assist me in selecting the entries for the poll. In one week we'll have a new client.Vote him now
POSHSPICE is on the wave - CONGRATULATIONS - what a victory.

Think I might be as well... been a long time away...
Edit: First rough... She's going to have a lot of art nouveau detailing mixed in with the Japanese stuff. Lots of tightening up to do yet, mainly on the the legs, which look a bit poo... It's a bit rude at the moment, but I shall alter her costume to cover her modesty as befitting a queen. Girls with swords huh? There's a step outside the comfort zone...
A bit of colour, to get a mood... I feel I'm missing the Victorian element a bit too much at the moment...
Final pic. I'd love to work on this further and if I get a chance I will, but time is against me for now. Crits and advice very welcome! Some amazing entries this round, and I really look forward to peoples finals! Edit: Altered the face abit more... and gave her a cleavage!
Worship me with fire and blood; worship me with swords and with spears. Let the woman be girt with a sword before me: let blood flow to my name. Trample down the Heathen; be upon them, o warrior, I will give you of their flesh to eat!
PC's fixed now - I'm in!
IF THIS POST DOES NOT CONTAIN SKETCHES OR PAINTINGS - REPRIMAND ME!
I'm in! Sounds neat!
Thumbnail time! Just a couple ideas. I like the one on the right more. The asymmetry is neat. I ultimately want to make the outfit to look like it is REALLY uncomfortable to wear. I started thinking about Victorian and Geisha outfits and how painful they seem. Anyways, crits are welcome and encouraged.
UPDATE: Added rough pencils. Much better ideas coming through here but now I have a bit more Japanese and want a little more Victorian. OH, and yeah, the proportions are off. :-P Starting on the final pencils soon.
NOW...WITH SOME COLOR! Unfortunately, this is as far as I am going to be able to go at the moment. I will finish this up later this week but I have some other things I need to take care of. So I would love some comments on it, especially the color. It has been a long while since I have used colored pencils and I like them but I think I may need to learn to paint digitally, the work some of you guys are doing in the computer is blowing my mind!
Here are some thumbnails, i think i like the one all the way to left the best
open to any comments
Here's what I've got so far. I've combined a furisode gown with a Victorian-style high-necked collar ( something to make it nearly impossible to tilt her head down), and threw on some braided epaulets for a more martial feel. Much like Rogzilla, I want this outfit to be excruciating to wear and have it show. I know the ox horn hairstyle is more Chinese, but it reminds me a little of Queen Victoria, so I think it stays. I'm looking forward to inserting a whole bunch of military background. I'm looking to make this look like a propaganda poster.
Update: OK, then. I've started sketching the underdrawing. I'm wondering if I've bitten off more than I can chew with the phalanx of soldiers in the background, but given my overall satisfaction with the project so far, I consider it a challenge instead of a problem. Still, it's kind of making me want to splash out for a nice shiny tablet and take a stab at digital painting ( until they start making poster paints with an UNDO function).
Update again: Started painting. Flag and sky done in watercolor. I think I'll want to go back in and do it again in poster paint; I don't like the look of the paper texture complicating the image. Other than that, I like where this is going. Great job everyone!
OK. All done.
For some reason I keep seeing peony embroidered fluffy dresses... can't stop the visions!
Edit: dudu dudu du carack that wip
Updated with some paint still a little more... juuuust a little
Here's my WIP but i'm afraid i don't have the patience to draw al the little thingies on her dress. Brrrrrrrrrrr.
Wallpaper did the job.
Here's my entry.
Ok I'm in
3. Photoshop Speed Paint
4. Clean Up
First version of Black Queen:
My second version AND OFFICIAL FINAL:
I hope some of the pros will post their progress. I hate it when they post their masterpiece on last second..
cool designs so far!
Here's my start...
BJÖRN HURRI | CONCEPT ARTIST & ILLUSTRATOR
MY PORTFOLIO | HURRICANES DAILY DOODLES '12
MY EXCLUSIVE SKETCHBOOK
VIKING: BATTLE FOR ASGARD
THE OTHER BROTHERS
firstly may I say congrats to my boy cakey well done man awsome work!
Ok this is my work in progress, my idea is that the queen is baisically dying, so her husband (the king) before his assination made her these black widow-esqe legs to follow him in to battle.
Since his death she has proven herself as a worthey leader of her nation, and despite her failing health will always be found at the very front of any skirmish.
Black widow legs aside i plan to make the most of the victorian/samuarai thing which you can see more of in the second pic. no sword yet either
excellent entries so far peeps looks like an ace round!
this is where Iam at so far guys all wip of course, Iam trying to get a sense of english rose/ war monster going on see what ya think, ill post the old sketches on my sketch book so drop by if you cant remenber what they look like.
this round is look amazing by the way,and thanks for the kind words
This is as finished as it gets i think, no time to work on it this weekend so this is it for me.
cheers guys all the entries have been fantastic so far cant wait to see them all done!
Great concepts already everybody.
Bjornhurri - that is a great outfit she's got on! Love that long long dress and the headwear.
D-Baker -Awesome idea with the mecha spider legs!
Heres my quickly scribbled concept idea for her clothes. Couldn't spend too much time on it here at work.
Had some more time to do another drawing.
Update: Dammit I haven't had the time to sit down and paint a finished drawing. Gotta sit this one out.
I think this is going to be a busy one! Some great stuff in here already.
Cakeypigdog: Great range of thumbs - they all feel battle-ready yet elegant.
D_Baker: Stylish! The spider legs idea is a winner.
Hurricane: Great shape. I hope you don't think I'm treading on your toes but Victorian bustle/long dress shape is too good a motif to pass up.
Here's my bunch of thumbs. I'm going to go with something akin to the design on the right. The queen will ride like a figurehead at the top of some sort of giant dress/vehicle thing. I'm not sure whether the dress will be filled with mechanical gubbins or a bunch of slaves. Either way, the idea is that she's floating along serenely while under the surface there's lots of frantic movement going on (like a swan's legs beneath the water). I really hope I get a chance to finish.
Here's my WIP...
...and here's my final. It's not as finished as I'd like, and it's just a pure costume design, but I don't think I'll have the time to do any more. I originally wanted to do some intricate embroidery on the huge sleeves and I'm not too happy with the fan. Maybe another time...
By the way, the thing on her head is actually a hat that's sitting at an almost 90 degree angle facing forward, being held up by hair, the green ribbons behind it, and probably some magic.
The Black Queen
Based on similar masks worn by ancient Samurai warriors, the Black Queen's face mask at once indicates her military position and represents her divinity - as divine leader of the GBNR, her true appearance is never revealed. The mask depicts the mouth of the lion traditionally employed by the British to represent their Empire. It now stands for their ruler's strength. The fan and sword she holds are merely ceremonial, harkening back to times and traditions long since past.
Heey this is my first entry ever, too. So i hope it's accepable to post a WIP.
and the final. my bit is nothing compared to everyone's. guuh it makes me feel ashamed of myself. which is exciting keep it up, please?
this is the Queen. though she's a mastermind with politics and warfare, she prefers not to do much physical activity. instead she stays in her palace, and green-screens all of her events.
nice entries so far!
here's my wip..
Lunch break fix-up, don't have any more time to work on this.. so I guess it's finished
I've been looking around the CA forums lately, thought id join in.
Here are some pen sketches I did exploring possible costumes.
More work. First idea was all pencil. Thought I would try another idea with just my tablet ...
This time, I decided to use a more soldierly attitude, and with some obviously victorian traits. Rather than just plate armor used in my previous sketch, I decided to make the plate armor nod more towards a pattern that would remind one of a girdle. Add in some mechanical armor on the arm, which was inspired by both victorian armor and samurai plates (the shoulders are the more obvious samurai touch) so thats what came out so far. The overall feeling I got when I got to this point was that she seems like she should lead, but it would be more a nation of scoundrels who fight against larger superpowers. She, herself is scholarly, but with a vicious alterego.
Not quite finished, but I fear I've run out of time...

Congrats on the win Jake and Nice subject. Thought it’s about time I did more humans so I’ve given it a go, here’s a quick gut feeling one I did over lunch. Hopefully I’ll find time to take this further.
Thought I'd take this one to black and white for now as I really want it to pop with the values rather than colour (everyone’s like the colour so far so I hope this leap into the unknown works ). I may add the colour again at the end
After a bunch of sketches I went back to my very first one. Unfortunately Im the worlds worst PS Painter so it looks like poo...Oh god how i miss my Brushes...my real ones that is...
Heres my WIPs
a rough sketch
and then some reallly rough color
Delmar: I love the lacey textures used throughout your picture! that was one thing I learned when researching for this concept-- lace became very popular during this time because of new lace-creating machines. Beautiful!
Well, here's my first time entering. I'm not entirely satisfied with this yet, so this still might be a WIP.
Holy knee-jerk reaction batman! Some roughs, Im working on a more considered design at the mo, its also a bit more techy. Not sure she should even be holding a weapon unless its ceramonial but most of you seem ok with an ass kicking queen
Done! If its still "Sunday somewhere else in the world" by the time I finnish work I might noddle it a bit more if thats ok.

EDIT3. I'm going to have to call this finished, as I've officially run out of time for this entry. Completely pales in comparison to a lot of these - I need a change of style.
My Black Queen zips about checking on her dissident factions with a steam jetpack, much to the horror of her Council.
Really, really great pictures, cakeypigdog, poshspice and filip... and loads of others!
