Caught between two warring industrial powers the city of Derwell on Banbar had a long harsh civil war for control of it's vast hydro power generating facilities. But the inhabitance formed a resistance army and liberated their city. After the war ended and the waterwheels were rebuilt the past inhabitance began to wander back and start rebuilding their homes in their new socialist paradise.

Hi! My contribution to EOW is a futuristic city called The Waterfall City.
The reason for the name is, that it is situated along a huge waterfall,
which has many functions. The main is to suply the city with electricity -
for that they have four huge power plants. Of course they also have running
water all the time, huge lifts for transportation and many activities inside the buildings. It is actually quite a happy city living in harmony with nature.

WATERFALL CITY, latest Merza's development, even though they liked living in the depths of Lake Hywull, the king prefered the panoramic views from high above, they have developed vertical algae plantations & the energy is produced by the flow of the water, even when the buildings are shattered continuosly by the water, there is sense of calm inside of them, enemies have tried to take over, but after many battles no one has been able to defeat them.

Waterfall city isn't exactly a city, more like a holiday resort, that's named 'Waterfall City.' A self contained area, kind of like Centre Parcs in Europe (not sure if there are any in the rest of the world??). The main attraction, apart from the waterfalls, is the 'Plaza' (like the Parc Plaza in Centre Parcs). Its got the usual sports areas, swimming pool, bars, restaurants, shops and clubs as well as executive accommodation. The closest accommodation to the plaza extends out into the Waterfall along with observation points which have there own bars and restaurants. The rest of the accommodation is connected by a monorail system, that extends underneath the waterfall, which is operational 24 hours a day. The only travel to the resort is offered by a train service that snakes through the countryside.

A city that was once thriving on ground level, with it's location cleverly situated between deep valleys later became flooded due to the movements in the earth's crust. This shifting of the earth's surface brought water from nearby oceans which at first created minor floods. The water level rose throughout the years and the land was eventually swallowed up, but with some of the old city remains are still visible at ground level.

The new city built on higher grounds, can be found hidden high up between the waterfalls. It is said that this is the only place on earth where multiple rainbows can be seen everyday of the year. Some call it the Waterfall City while others call it paradise.

    backstory....
The city in the jungle always depended upon its position next to a waterfall to provide it iwth power, water and to help dispose of their waste. As time went on the jungle was gradually pushed back by the seemingly never ending growth of the city and its population. The jungle always attemted to reclaim the city but progress always won out against nature.

Perched atop a jagged bit of rock on the Delvorian Waterfall, the magic citadel of Brimlorg the Buoyant is rarely seen up close. Of the few men that have visited the fortress, only Throndor the Bold has returned to seek the wizard's help. It is said that Throndor knows of a secret cave that travels under the waterfall, and that he alone holds a magic charm to pass by the beast that guards the caves. Some have also conjectured the wizard and Throndor have a secret alliance, but that is only rumor.

After The Battle of Naoen, Outpost Leopold was the last point of Arquon resistance before the Great Sea of Naluja. The Coalition forces and conflict had never made it as far as Naluja, so when the fighting ceased and all of the metal, guns & ordnance were removed, there stood a rough jewel gleaming by the Nalujan Sea.
Although crude and unsightly the original stuctures and power source were left in place and over generations what was Outpost Leopold of Western Naoen evolved into what is now fondly known as Waterfall City.

    Mars City, 2280 A.D.

Terraforming has been underway for several decades now. The air still doesn't have enough oxygen to breath and the temperature is still close to freezing, but life is quite pleasurable inside the large buildings, that Mars City consists of. My office is in that awesome building there by the way, the one with the two wings! You should see the view

oh yeah, the description: "The golden light of late summer made his home seem almost welcoming, for once, the ash and soot of the furnace was blown away from the houses by a gay Southern wind. The waters were by alternating moments clear, offering near mirror-like reflections and troubled, refracting confusing contradictions of light and shadow. The marble mausoleums still squatted like gargoyles up on the clifftops, vomiting water down onto the wheel that powered the bellows that fueled the fires that heated bathwater for the emperor and his court. He sighed, lifted his pole from the water and let the current carry his flat bottomed skow off course for a few breaths. Then he squared his shoulders and directed the small boat back towards his destination. At least his family would be happy to see his return."

2371 – After nearly a century of construction and backbreaking effort, the Continental Water Desalinization Facilities had been completed. Each was instilled with its own unique character by the social and ethnic environments in which they were built, but one in particular stood out. The CWDF-002, named unanimously by its citizenry "Whitefall", was a city unto itself, having been wholeheartedly adopted as such by a grateful populace. Located on the edge of the Kleeid Wastes, the complex was further developed in later years to serve as water-provider, housing and congregation area for the people, and to this day continues to grow into a sizable metropolis, enabling the once devastated surroundings to build a renewed culture and prosperity.

thanks for the advice guys, especially for mentioning putting something in the foreground, ATAnderson.

"We've been on our own out here since the gate collapsed. We've learned to build our homes in the sky to avoid the toxic fumes. We've made machines to mine the surface for raw materials. We've altered our metabolism to suit the food supply. We've earned every moment of our survival. Our one blessing is the ice-ring and the nearly inexhaustible supply of water it provides. So the falls are wasteful, so be it. They're also majestic and defiant. They inspire our civilization to reach for greatness - even as we scrape out a living on a dead planet, isolated at the far end of the Universe."

A century of overpopulation demanded renewable energy for the city-state Archos. The countryside was historically honored for its natural beauty: the Archan falls. Years of legislative battle were waged, but in the end the water was harnessed. Citizens of Archos now live amidst the never-ending drone of giant turbines - even the water's roar fading dully into the background.

When braving treacherous paths through these misty valleys, be wary; for what you seek does not wish to be found. Over the waterfall rests a quiet, secretive people, who have gone to extraordinary lengths to extricate themselves of all remnants of humanity. Upon beholding the guardian tower of our lands, know this: If you are one of those from who the worthy have escaped, beware, for you have now entered the realm of Mycenae, and are not welcome.

I hope this is okay, city not really designed to be around a waterfall but rather unfortunate enough to end up there :]

Description: This ancient city was struck by disaster when a meteor struck nearby to create a huge hole in the ground and disturb the entire area. The plains were flooded and the city drowned in the waters.

"The 'Waterfall City'-project started as a normal tourist attraction. Firsty, there was only a huge bridge on which tourists could walk to watch the giant waterfalls stream down. Later, it became bigger when a holiday resort was built on the bridge. Because of the enormous popularity of these homes, the resort grew more and more. The less space on the upper side of the bridge forced the constructors to even build under the bridge, and later on, to even set up a hole complex on the lake.
Years later, when that what was once only a small holiday resort reached a population of over a half million, the right to be a real city was the given to former bridge construction.
Today, this still very popular place is known as the 'Waterfall City'.
...and living 'under the bridge' has never been asked this much."

The Cascada tree has roots that reach deep into the earth and act as a very powerful filtering system for the swamplands they are native to. Found only in the wettest regions of their home planet, cascada forests often support thousands of humans who depend on the water that falls from the lake atop every tree.
Cascada trees thrive wherever there is water. Usually thought of as a very helpfull tree, when a cascada forest invades a body of salt water it can be very bad. Oftentimes they will invade and their powerful filtering system will distill all salt from the ocean, killing all plant and animal life dependant on the sodium in the water; Turning the ocean into a vast freshwater swamp of cascada trees.

There was a time when this city lived in peace. The great cloud machines breathed precious water into the atmosphere. Water that the machines retrieved from distant, less arrid lands. On one such mission, the machines were attacked and re-programmed to destroy the peaceful city. They now hover above spewing massive amounts of water, destroying the city. Smaller, heavily armed defense ships patrol the streets eradicating any attempt to rescue the remaining civilians.

Home of the cloud fairies, the giant evergreen stands high above the clouds. Small mushroom cottages are scatters around the tree with larger structures hidden within the leaves. The tree collects water from its root and draw it out at the top, supplying the small civilisation with water.

The white city of Tybes is over 1200 years old. Originally several cities of water worship, the cities were build around the waterways and rivers leading of the great Borah Waterfall. In 500 years the cities grew to become the city state of Tybes. The water from the Falls provided the city with a means to create energy throughout the centuries. The ancients were right when they said that the water will take care of the city.

Rhymm, a small city on the northern spread, was once an important rail town on the gold mining frontiers. Since the necessitation and reintroduction of clean transport, it has been converted to a rest and revival stop on the balloon shipping lines. By night, the small township lights up and revellers share stories by lantern light, lulled by music and the omnipresent tumbling and crashing of cystal clear falls.

Further down the shipping lines, many labourers are heard to remark of the old world charm of the lantern light flickering on the moonlit waters.

    Enrica, The waterfall city

Enrica is a age old city that was built along the side of The Great River of Tolomos. Enrica gets the great waterfall name from the streams of waterfalls that fall off the edges of the buildings that run alongside the riverstream. The city itself is split into two major parts facing the opposite of each other along the river. It is connected by many connecting bridges.
All the electricity in the city runs on the currents of the waterfall streams that run throughout the whole city, thus the waterfalls are a vital part of Enrica. The waterfalls still run today however the buildings are in much need of repair.

My vote went to Ryan DeMita. I love the idea behind this. Execution was not the best, but technical ability is there to where it can stand against the other works.

ArtZealot, Hurricane, Koppa, ATanderson, YAdam were entries I was considering.
    Hot Images guys!

There were some other great entries as well! Good stuff everybody! XD

Art2: Were retro looking! I think if you had put in, say, another four hours, this could have been a strong piece (not that's it's not good as is). I think the flying space craft needs some sense of movement and some thruster lights.

Beelow: That's a little heavy on the dutch angle. Nice start though.
Form: That's some good shape your piece is in (get it, 'cause you go by form The train smoke is a little weak though. Easy to fix. I'd think about it!

wow, tough choice. Art Zealot got my vote for the unique interpretation of "waterfall" and an immediately identifiable city. a bit too monochromatic, though, a larger variety of greens and some other-hued accents and shadow kicks would have made this a truly splendid piece imo.

Gizmodus was a very close second for a strong sense of landscape and depth and excellent understatement of the waterfall elements. he (or she?) really only got second 'cause there wasn't a description. otherwise it'd be a tie and i still wouldn't have made a decision

    Voted vor Vantrum.
I really like the high-architecture feel, but not dark and unfriendly technology like in many other sci-fi artworks. Also, it is somehow very nice how far you can see into the pic, and i can really feel the strong force of the waterfalls.
    Great job!

The others as well, i love the works of ATAnderson and ArtZealot very much too....!

Jesus...there were so many entries this round. Everyone really did a fantastic job. It would take me all day to type a response for everyone though. In the end I also went with Vantrum. I agree that it also has that whole nice tourist look to it. The city is also really nicely depicted with those waterfalls, almost like a futuristic Niagra Falls.

    Runner Up's-Gizmodus, ArtZealot

artzealot: i love yours man, its right up my alley. a few colour variation accents here and there would have really set it off man... but im a stickler for details and youve captured that very explorable feel in your piece. nice job.

bumskee: dude yours is totally gay! I MEAN... FAIRIES? Sorry man, i just cant stand looking at yours another second...

yAdam: a contender bro... 2 crits: first id say watch your overall value schemes and place some well thought out contrasts... your piece lacks a distinct focal point that could be established by some well placed contrast and saturation scheme in the building area. Secondly, your use of big brushstrokes is really good, but perhaps you could experiment with a different brush shape at the same size? maybe a pallete knife shape or something with texture? Because at the moment it seems like the round brush is crippling your edge clarity a bit and your losing the solidity in all those wonderful shapes! I really like the overall shapes in the building, and i could see you reworking this to be a real portfolio piece. Nice

atanderson: really cool man! i love the detail, i can just imagine how you went about thinking out a backstory for each little building However consider whether you may have wheres wally syndrome... think about subordination of detail in non-focus areas, using detail, saturation, contrast patterns to lead a path for the eye through the painting. At the moment the detail is quite a constant 'pattern' throughout the piece. For instance the value shifts on the water at the bottom could be much more subtle and less distracting. Really cool though

jfwalls: yours was really hard for me to come to a conclusion on... some of your rendering is fantastic (particularly the subtle texture in the foreground) but some just looks unfinished or 'too simple'... your technique in some parts just suggest that you could challenge yourself more? Either way nice entry man.

hurri: beautiful man, really nice. i know you love crits like warm apple pie... but youve stumped me this time bro, so you get my vote. Hi fives

Thanks dragon4lunch for your kudos, it was a pity i thought i had more time to finish it, it was originally a day piece with a much broader range of colours, i cheated at the last minute and made it nighttime to save myself some rendering and such. Ended up we had more time than i thought but i wasnt at my comp! DOH!

And thanks chaos for hosting my piccychure!! much appreciated.

Gizmodus: Beauty, your painting! It's obviously just a sketch at this point, but it communicates quite a bit. The part where the water falls off is much to sharp right now, and the foreground structure needs a li'l detail. Cool colours, literally!
IdiotApathy: I recognized your style right away! I've been to your CA sketchbook - great stuff! Beautiful sketch, sir!
Ryan DeiMita: Nice one, reminds me of Steven Spielberg's take on War of the Worlds. Part of it are the birds, like in the movie. They work so well... and yet... they are sooo... cliche? Yes? Great piece man!
Corrick: Ye got me vote! Love your style, love it!!!
dragon4lunch: Superb!!! Man, you rock! Awesome cityscape!!! Oh wait, you're me!

Hehe, chaos, don't worry. I've participated in many COW rounds where I had put many hours in to it and then only received very few votes. It's about persistence and not giving up after some disapointments.

Form: Great crit. That's one of the reasons I've started participating in EOW. I'm much more comfortable painting natural things like grass, dirt, etc, but not as strong at buildings. Unless of course they're buildings made of brick or stone, or that have a very organic feel.

Also, I voted for Corrick. Great image. The colors and shapes are so simple, yet have so much character.

i've gone with bwkeough, i love the perspective and the piping and the quirkiness of it all, well done everyone else. I also enjoyed artzealots for its mystery, Gizmodus for its scale and perspective, Trashy for the bold colors and nice brushwork and finally Ryan DeiMita for the really interestung take on the concept(my equal first place but i had to vote for someone!)

Yanimator - I feel like yours lacks a strong focal point but that to me, that is overpowered by a strong sense of color. The palette is really nice. Also, the way the whole piece is rendered out reminds me more of traditional than digital, which also made it really cool. you got my vote.

Runners up (in no particular order):
Koppa: Only crits on your piece is that it is a little bit dark, and the waterfalls in it kind of seem like an afterthought. I really like your rendering style though. it looks like you used painter, so it also looks a little more like traditional than digital, which is a really cool effect. The composition is also really great.

Hurricaine - Really nice rendering, color and composition. There were some issues with scale that i wasn't getting. I am pretty sure it's a really little city, but i think it could a few more scale references in it. Also, a story would be really cool. I'd like to know, other than being a scenic place to build, why the city was built on a log next to a waterfall. Truly a nice looking piece though, yours was a very close second.

ATAnderson - Another really great piece. It has nice rendering, nice detail, and interesting colors, but i feel like the lighting in it kind of flattens the whole thing out because many things are so close in value. I also think it lacks a focal point. Those to me are minor things holding it back though, i still think it's a nice painting. it reminds me a bit of an environment you might see in an RPG like final fantasy or something.

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

Hey, feel free to critique my entry everybody! I'd appreciate it!

By the way, I find it very useful to use CTRL-F (in firefox) to search the page for a name, when someone is referring to somebodies piece, for example. Much faster than scrolling around and searching.

I choose yanimator though the choice was not an easy one. His(?) I recognized easily was a waterfall city and it looked like you could see the history of the city in the image.

VOTED: ArtZealot: GREAT atmosphere and colors, nice details and a unique take on the "waterfall" city.

    ATAnderson
like i said before. awesome piece. i would've liked to see it cleaned up a tad more and it would've got my vote for sure. good to see u went with the original waterfall approach though!

dragon4lunch i really liked your sci-fi take! the initial sketch blew me away. would've been nice to see a bit more shine and stuff to really show that high-tech city. smoothed out a bit more (starwars-ish). ALMOST had my vote!

Corrick that's just plainarse cool! Really dig it but would've liked to see a bit more city maybe.

Vantrum Almost voted for your piece! it's amazing! but Zealot's moody environment won me over. You definitely had the best "waterfall city" though.

Great entries everyone (hope it's alright if i dont comment on everyone's ) i'd get fired from work if i did!

I did a lot of talking in the original thread, so I will limit my airtime here.

@Dragon4lunch - Your original lineart construction and perspective were solid man, I thought that you had a winner for sure, however I think you could have lit your environment up a whole lot better in terms of colour and value, I mean 'crimson sunset on mars' is just an invitation to get lost in your rendering & pallette. Still a cool piece man.

@Ryan DeMita - wicked artwork man, cool take on the theme, realistic pallette and rendering. Good work.

@Mainloop - Yours was nearly my vote, but I thought your value perspective made the whole thing a bit flat, I had this with my stuff for ages. Still a pretty epic piece of work, look forward to more of your stuff.

Thanks to everyone who commented on my piece, would be nice to know who voted for it - mabye I am just missing these.

@Form - Nice image man. Thanks for your crits man & comments also. I saw the 'lack of focus' too far in to try to correct it. Your crits make sense but I am unsurehow to fix this, I try to follow all the rules but always a big overall thing that lets me down. I think mostly cause I am self taught. any further advice would be much appreciated but perhaps this thread is not the place. Thanks again.

@ArtZealot - Cool piece man, I think the monochomatic look is working for you and your concept itself is very original. Only crit would be scale is a bit small to be a city to me, but that's just me. Thanks also for your crits man, you also sound well educated in the ways, again as with Form, any further advice you can offer would be most helpful to me, I find the masses of detail and lack of focus tend to evolve out of the image not deliberatley but as a result of me not knowing how to render/light/take it in any other direction. Thanks again man and good work.

@yanimator - every time I scroll down this thread yours catches my eye, really great work man.

@Corrick - you got my vote man, I am setting your minimalistic style as a bench mark for my stuff, as I want to create more impact with less content, really cool piece, I think it would make a really nice start to the sketchbook you are going to start quite soon. Don't you think everyone?

What a round guys & girls, and the votes are showing this. Look forward to future clashes.

    Adam.
