Help the helpless...can someone tell me how you make the title/link to your sketchbook on the forum page appear in bold type? I'd appreciate it.

    The Few. The Proud.

I've seen a few posts now on this site with some claiming that the Nazi's had the best uniforms or that they "looked the coolest". Well I've just got one thing to say about that...

BULLSH*T!! YOU COMMUNIST HEATHEN SCUM, YOU MAKE ME WANNA' VOMIT!! HERE'S WHAT A REAL UNIFORM LOOKS LIKE! AAAAAAAHHH!!!

Your studies are great! I love your style where you have straight-ish lines and yet still a lot of fluidity. I also like the stuff where you fully shaded it.

As for your colored works, try to bring a couple colors into the whole thing, and it will make the work more unified.

My favorite piece is the skydiving one. You do good motion!

Data Strings: Thanks for the kind words and the crits. Do you mean to say that I should use fewer colors? Not sure I'm following you...too many colors in one piece?

cmoreland: Thanks, I'm flattered. Rogue homage, huh? Are we talking Rogue as in X-Men?

Great variety here. Standouts for me are your Thundercats, anime/manga derived work, your animals--lot of feeling to your animals, especially the tigers-- and your geat hand/anatomy studies. Do more of those, because I think your Thundercats/GIJoe/anime sketches show you've really absorbed what simple line drawing can express. Couple that sensitivity to line with more study of human anatomy and structure.
Oh, and I really like the Karloff studies! A couple years ago for Halloween Turner Classic Movies showed the classic Universal Studios monster movies back to back, including FRANKENSTEIN and THE MUMMY. I got most of 'em on an 8 hour tape and had fun a couple days later doing freeze-frame doodles from them. especially these two Karloff movies because the makeup and lighting are so cool, as your studies show!

    The Golden Butterfly

Here's a little something Madison and I did for fun yesterday. I think it's the best butterfly... maybe even one of the best face paintings that I've pulled off yet. Skin is a really difficult canvas to work on. Gives me a newfound respect for really good tattoo artists. Couple of different angles...

Cory: Thanks for your kindness Indeed, I just bought a new anatomy book from Barnes & Nobles a few weeks ago. Been studying it and trying to draw at least a page or two of studies a week, always trying to improve my grasp of anatomy/linework/shading. Karloff's the man. You should post your studies of him in your SB, I'd like to see them.

28chelseaslater: Good eye. It is the last unicorn. I tried to do a sunset motif inside the hair. It didn't turn out like I invisioned it but it still looks pretty, I likes the colors. Madison liked it too, that's all that matters.

cmoreland: Hmmmm...I'm not so good at females. Haven't really practiced them enough. They always end up looking a bit manish. Rogue homage...perhaps. Psylocke's much cooler looking, imo. Maybe an X-Babe homage? Thinking...

Thanks for comenting twice in my sketch book. I owe you one for sure since I even checked your sketch book more then once.

I do like your focusing at old school series and it's also from variable series which is good in my book. Can we also expect more original work? I wonder what influence it will have since you love those old school series. You sure have good control with your pencils, it's very pleasent to look at. The face paintings are well done.

Good luck and have fun with the anatomy studies.

robz: ...THUNDERCATS, HOOOOO!! Where's the live action film, I ask you? Ving Rhames as Panthro, people. YES! (Then again, Hollywood's sure to screw it up. I give you Michael Bay's Transformers... ...) Thanks for the compliments

whitevillage: Good of you to drop by! I love my childhood memories, yes indeed I do need to do some originals. I guess it's just easier to draw something previously established. Laziness...

I'm glad somebody finally said something nice about the face paintings, my girl's been wondering if anybody liked them. She'll be tickled, so many thanks

Good studies. Seems like you're good at emulating styles, but you have to find your own. And yes: an X-chicks hommage would rock and be great practice! Love the Boris Karloff sketch.

PS: Your daughter is a cutie.

ravenslayer: Yes, like I said before...laziness. I promise I'm going to start working on some original character designs soon, everybody. Thanks for looking.

YEAAAAAY Cookiedough!! She IS a cutie, I her too many. Good chromosomes, what can I say?

Maybe one day I'll discover my style. That's why I've been working more on anatomy studies than anything else lately. Fan art is fun, but I want to do my own thing too. Originals soon. Thanks sweetie. I'll be by your SB soon.

    Hello Mat!

The sketches in #14 are both good. Bruce Lee is recognizable but the arms are too thick. The foot studies are excellent, feet are difficult to draw as I found out recently!!! You did those very well.

Oh, cute kids too, keep up the good work.

I wasn't going to do this at first because this stuff is SO old, but I guess it's just a way to show where I've come from in my humble art beginnings. I was inspired by cmoreland's Sam Keith homage and I thought, "what the hell, why not"? They're good to look at for sh*ts n' giggles. Unfortunately, they're not originals like I've been promising. These were done probably between the ages of 12-18 years old or so. Mostly comic book stuff, that's how I started to learn proportion, anatomy, etc. (These are too funny to look at, hehe...) Here goes:

My little bro' was a ninja turtles freak, so...

    And some marvel comics stuffs:

And here's some random nuggets o' joy:

    A sketch-

    And the scratchboard version-

One of my first serious attempts at a life study, my friend Leigh's senior portrait. I was pretty proud of this one at the time-

This IS original. I listened to lots of Blind Melon in high school. Designed this for a sticker, then drew something on top of it without knowing and the marker bled through...AAAARRGH!!

I did the art for my high school yearbook one year. Our mascot is the Carlsbad Cavemen. Strong Jim Lee influences, obviously-

That's all the old stuff for now. Here's a couple of more recent things:

WHEW!! OK, then. Have to go work now...on Father's Day... ...
