Hi there, nice dragon, very promising, i like your painting style, is very "you" , i really like the way u maked the gold coins, something that could be cool is a back light and a transparency in the wings of the dragon, just my opinion, waiting to see it finished, cheers!

zulu: Thanks man! However, I'm actually thinking of starting over on a new Smaug-picture. It's not because I don't really like this one, but I want to try conveying more of his personality and less of him being a dragon into it. We'll see.

Wr00m: Tack, fan!

Like I said I started on a whole new Smaug. Less dramatic but more Smaug-like, methinks. Finished soon.

Impeccable Bowser sketch! Should sell it to Nintendo. You're better than their artists!

wow, great stuff in this thread! You have 5 stars from me.
The creature in 297# looks like the one that Neville Page does in a tutorial for the workshop called "Rendering flesh". Is there any conection?
    Interesting tutorial.

It's been a month since my last post? I've been slacking off.

zulu: Thanks, glad you think so!
lennon: Thanks man! And yes, it's pretty obvious I just wanted to try out the tutorial.

Doing a commission now that's supposed to be sort of a parody of the poster to Army of Darkness.

your stuff is really fun, i love the army of darkness pose in this last one, and the hades makes me very happy. the 2 things that keep popping out to me though. everything seems to glow from within rather than have light play off of the surface. the gold in your smog piece looks more like embers in a fire, or molten beads. the first pass that you posted was a lot closer to how it would feel, theres dark spots with light clipping off of the coins facing up. and in this new indiana orc one his pants are more glowing red than light hitting it. james kei kind of has that effect but he still places the light on the surface

the other thing is that everything looks sticky, i only went back a couple pages but saw a couple where it was a furry or feathered creature but the highlights were as if it were drenched in ky. wich would be fine but the sillhouette was still fluffy.

so do a couple lighting studies of different types of materials and watch how the light plays off of different surfaces

awesome stuff, the voodoo onion makes me really happy

RichKid: Thanks for the crit, man! God knows I need it, even though I probably won't admit it half of the time. The only thing I disagree with is the gold in the Smaug-pic since it was suppose to "glow" more than shine. Hehe.

Excellent parody, the color scheme is integrated and exhumes a playful, coppery heat.

    Suggestions:

    - Those blades oughta be sharper, methinks, and you could also ponder a set of alternative weaponry for the little guys patrolling beneath on the hot rocks. Maybe scythes could replace their knives and spears? Or keep the two at the top and curve the blade of the one at the bottom? Grim Reaper references would help if the suggestion is workable.
    - Could the flying city ship be on fire? It'd add to the cinematic-like chaos of the scene.
    - The goblin creature at his side's hand resting on the main character's leg may be too light colored, noticably different from the hue on face.
    - The lighting is also a curious issue. The left side of the main character's body is illuminated by an unknown source while the ground beneath him, including the little killer critters below, recieve no exposure of that light. It could be that a menagerie of light and shadow is in the place of our perspective - beyond what we can't see in a painting doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

It is a fine sketchbook. I hope anything helps.

    Keep doing you

Vulgar`: Thank you! Unfortunately it's too late for me to change anything since the deadline has passed, but I'll consider your suggestions anyway!

    - The grim reaper reference is a good idea, considering the skull motif and all, but the only weapon info I got for those characters was that they carried spears, so I went with that.
    - I could have set it on fire, but I don't know if that would have been appreciated.
    - That was supposed to be a glove, actually, but I suppose it didn't really show. Hehe.
    - Oh, the lighting... The original painting contained too many light sources for my simple mind to handle, I think. Yes, you're probably right about that. Oh well... Yes, let's think of it as a menagerie!

    Thanks for the input!

It's no problem, good luck with it. Are you looking to get this published?

    Hah, I read you.

    - That was supposed to be a glove, actually, but I suppose it didn't really show. Hehe.
At first glance, not really, but now that you mention it I do notice the bottom of the glove against his skin, just a minor spot, it still works fine.

    Thanks for the input!
