    Megadeth CD Cover Design

Hi guys, this is a piece of fanart I did for megadeth.
It was done for a logo contest by them.

It's quite noobish compared to all the other great works on here,
but I hope I may get some crits on.
Feel free to rip it apart, it'll only help me get better.

    cheers.

Solid concept! Nice and disturbing, mysterious. Prerequisites for the genre...!
To make it better: Some small things in your execution don't equal the epic concept: 1) generic lighting. some atmosphere, more decisive lights/shadows would add dynamics, realism. 2) generic form/textures of some of the parts look like the same materials (teeth/metal/etc. kinda look the same) again steals from the potential grit and realism.

Keep going. I like the overall looseness - a much better approach than starting really tight and trying to add life afterward.

You done a good job on this, Dave Mustaine would probably so the same himself a little darker lighting would kind of set it off a bit though as mentioned by Derek. still great work, it's something I would expect on one of their cd covers.

    i agree with vigostar...
the faceplate is a little too dark for me, and i think the orange, especially being as saturated as it is doesn't go as well with the rest of the piece as some other more muted color could.

other than that, not much to crit at the moment.
    it looks great!

I'd make the scull darker.. Perhaps a bit dark blueish like the visor.
Other than that, great piece.. I like it.

    thanks for the compliments.
Yeah now that you mention it, i can see that the lighting is pretty much head on, not a lot of shadow in it. (mostly because my knowledge on shades is rudimentary at best). I'd have to learn to render different materials better too, know any good tutorials on that?

I image there'd be some good examples on your site but it's not working for me, could be because I'm in China and half the internet is blocked here... (the un-communist half perhaps? lol)

Thanks for the kind words, I thought Dave would like this, but it didn't win or anything, maybe if I knew more about rendering :/
The skull is probably too bright, I was thinking of giving it contrast while painting it but I wasn't sure where to put down the strong shadows so I just made the face plate darker to produce contrast that way, but it just doesn't cut it does it...

i'm probably going to school for fine arts soon so expect better stuff!

vigo - excuse my noobishness but what do you mean "take a dump"...

nah, I think i'm at least somewhat sufficient at 3d, but I'm not happy with my ability to draw and paint concept arts and stuff, so I'm just trying to catch up my 2d. I'll still work on 3D at the same time though

I remember this piece, while the Megadeth contest was on , And to be Quite honesy the final choice that Dave Mustiane picked up I don't digg it at all. I like your piece...except of that M in the middle of the head..besides good work. ...Deth Rocks...

Very nice concept. Although there are a few minor issues as others have pointed out, this could also easily be accepted as a final piece as is. Consider what Mustaine picked and looking at your work, I would have chosen yours hands down and slapped it on an album cover and shirts.
