Here's a few small updates. Been on holiday these past two weeks or so, and haven't drawn all that much.
First one is a bunch of sketches for Team Chow, a lizardman kinda thingy. Not sure I'll continue with it but I think I'll do some more sketches on it.
And a birthday card for Davi, since it is his birthday today It came out better than I expected, for only 90 min of work.

I like the lizardmen, but a couple of 'em look too much like something out of Star Wars.

So, update on the Lizardman for the team Chow. First I did a few more sketches to find a suitable body design, and then worked one out so the species was sort of defined. After that all that is left is to create a nice character based of it.
I liked the middle one best because it had some more bulk, and I imagined them to be warriors rather than thiefs or spellcasters so I elaborated that one a bit. I also made a write up about the species itself to put my thoughts about them in a more clear and set medium
Lizardmen are an ancient race that's been around from well before humans ever decided to climb out of the trees. They are a highly individualistic race, which is probably the reason why they never became a dominant species in their environment.
As soon as a juvenile lizardman crawls out of its egg, the motherlizard abandons the nest and leaves the youngs to the mercy of their environment. Few make it to adulthood, but the ones that do are tough and have no natural predators. Lizardmen are highly intelligent and as they live for a very long time (rumoured to be an average of 400 to 600 hundred years) they are usually a source of knowledge and wisdom.
Their natural habitat is the deserts and lush jungles in the warmer regions of the world, as they are cold blooded and cannot regulate their own temperature. They can often be found basking in the sun or cooling in the shade, contemplating or meditating. They regard the sun as their god, as it not only is the source of all life on earth but also essential for their survival.
Lizardmen are nomadic of nature, and usually travel alone. They can often be found in company of other races, but they simply can't stand to be among a group of others from their own race. Though mainly sticking to their natural habitat, many lizardmen travel around the globe in search of ancient wisdom in ancient ruins and libraries. They mostly seek personal enlightenment as they didn't have any parents or people to teach them when growing up. Their appearance can vary depending on where they were born, but they do never walk on all fours anymore. They do not possess any magic either (this due to the fact that the lizardmen do not evolve and have not done so for eaons. Magic is like radiation, it makes mutations easier to appear, something that lizardmen are highly resistant against by nature).
Lizardmen, by their very nature, usually move slow but in need they can act with tremendous force and speed. Each single lizardman is worth a dozen humans when it comes to fighting, and they are unmoveable obstacles in a fight due to their thick and armored, scaled skin. The older the lizard, the fiercer an enemy it is. They are crafty in many skills, and usually make their own armor (with little metal as it tends to make them overheat easily. In general, their clothes are build to be able to both cool them or help them warm up when needed).
Finally, I worked on some concepts for the actual character. This is still in need of an actual description of the character though. I'm doing the evil version of the Lizardmen, Dished will do the Good version of it later.
Got one or two more ideas that I want to work out, so more will follow later
Awesome stuff, I love the way you've rendered the lizard guys' armor and accessories. Maybe when your rendering human skin and tones and such, it might help to keep things a little less 'contrasty' along the surface of the skin, especially between muscle groups. If you get what I'm saying. Sometimes they tend to feel a bit unnatural. You've got an awesome sketchbook though and I have a lot of respect for you, so keep it up!
Oh man, these designs are fantastic!! I can imagine them moving around and fighting, or basking in the sun. I think the two different body and armor designs work really well - you don't have to pick just one, do you?
- Think about adding some armor or spikes to the tails - lizards tend to have very strong tails, so they could make good secondary weapons.
- How about a little bit of red or blue color around their throats or something?

i personally prefer the first less (busy armor design) altho i'm not too much of a fan of the armor crests on his back (but i understand it does spice up the silhouette) and prefered him with bulgy chameleon eyes
really a fan of your sense of design, all so thouroughly researched and cool at the same time, kudos!

Pyroclasm00: Thanks a ton for the crit, really appreciated I see what you mean, I tend to overdo the contrast a little usually because of my ID background, where it can work very well. It bothered me in my characters but it took your crit to see what it was. Will try it out.
Cacodaemonia: Thanks. The tail is actually not a very good spot to put anything on, for a few practical reasons. First, it drags over the ground all the time and gear strapped on to it would wear down very quickly. Secondly, the tail is necessary for it to regulate its temperature, so anything that covers the skin there will obstruct this. Thirdly, it's used for balance rather than fighting, and is too short to actually be used as a practical weapon. Anyway, that was my reasoning here
TheGnoll: Thanks dude Yeh I think I'll go for the second one, though the idea behind the first design was that the armor could fold up to allow for easier warming up in the sun, while it could spread out for protection and shade when it needs to cool down.
Corza334: Thanks, same here Still a week or so to go, we need to get crackin' on the final illustrations.
Anyway, had to take it a little easier as my wrist started to act up a little. Mostly better now, so I finished up the third concept and am going to move on to the thumbs for the illustration and painting it soon.

The lizardmen designs are awesome. Really liking the one you went with and how far you've taken it. It looks like it could easily lower itself onto all fours and charge like a crocodile can!
