concept:

Hundreds of years ago Island culture believed that when the ground shook, and a volcano was about to erupt it was due to the gods being angry. The only way to save their villages from certain doom was to sacrifice their own into the fiery pits below. Seeing the fire gods made one go mad… Priests would come back babbling inane words, of living lava, writhing unspeakable masses within the magma… little has ever been found to dispute these godlike creatures.
Until recently that is… for yet again what seemed like a cyclic event, several hundred years have passed and the ground shakes once again… old timers look to the young for sacrifices, yet these newer generations are more scientific minded than ever and wish to explain what is happening.
This is what has been gathered so far…
Glimpses are gained, and instruments record but due to the intense heat one is not actually able to get close enough to study what in fact is a new species, one able to withstand the incredible heat and pressure under the earth. It would seem that these newly discovered lava swimmers stay deep within until it is time to mate… bashing and breaking at fault lines until they have reached the surface in what is to become a fiery cataclysmic mating ritual.
The cooler temperatures towards the surface are apparently necessary for proper incubation of eggs that have been left behind… the whole even lasts no more than a month, and then things are once again calm. With the young apparently already hatched and following their parents into the intense world below.

concept:

For a creature to survive such intense heat, its outer surface/shell must withstand great temperatures
and protect the creature's internal organs. It must also allow the creature to move through dense
fluid. The creature most likely has very low to minimal internal heat, which is why it needs to be in
a highly-thermal environment. The shell filters the amount of heat that reaches the internal organs,
always keeping it at a safe temperature.
There aren't many sources of food near lava, so the Lava Swimmer has to survive by other means.
The Lava Swimmer feeds on the solidified lava at the banks of the lava flow. It's rich in minerals the
creature uses to repair and strengthen its shell.
Living in lava, and only surfacing to feed, the Lava Swimmer doesn't have much use for eye sight. It
has no eyes at all, but it doesn't need them. the Lava Swimmer's main function is to regulate the lava's
flow and the volume of the lava pool by burrowing channels for the lava to flow. Only the adults do this.
A lava swimmer doesn't do anything but feed in its youth. Young lava swimmers just float near the banks
almost motionless, constantly feeding and growing. Once it has reached an adequate size and its tentacles
have developed, it can then maneuver itself around through the lava. It begins to burrow almost instantly,
which allows it to control its environment and reach full maturity. It then lays eggs near the banks and
the cycle is repeated.
At the end of its life cycle, a lava swimmer will burrow deeply into the volcano and set itself at the
end of its hole to begin decomposition. It dissolves its shell, causing a build up of pressure which causes
a minor eruption. The eruption launches the carcass out of the volcano and sailing into the sky. We know
this phenomenon as 'fire bombs'.

Once a freak of nature, this evolutionary mistake, now thrive at volcano pits and lairs, gliding across seas of lava. 90% of its body is a solid rock alloy, combined with another 10% of pure methane gas; this creature is unbothered by the 1000 degrees of hit of its surrounding habitat. Reshaping, rearranging constantly, this lava swimmer reproduce at the depths of the earth`s core, making its way to the surface every year for the soul purpose of mating then dying as its fiery river route cools down and hardens.

A mix between fish and insect, born blind, approx. 3-5 meters long. The hard chitin armor guards against the hight temperature, with cooling bags located directly beneath. It has no eyes because of said temperature. Instead it uses the sensitive antennae on top of the head to catch vibrations in the air, locating birds and other creatures above the lava, and,in rare cases, creatures in the lava. Usually a slow creature,as not to burn too much energy, but quick when it strikes. Occasionally known to eat mineral-rich rocks to gain energy.

The Fire shark is actually a creature similar to a dolphin. They are very intelligent, yet are completely blind in the traditional sense. They navigate by detecting differences in heat within the magma, and absorb minerals through their skin for nourishment. The Sulwarii have domesticated them, and use them as transportation on the Sea of Fire.

The majority of its life is spent on the top of dried volcanic rock scrounging for prey that has fallen to the intense heat of the area, but a few times a year they will dive into the hardened crust of a volcano basin to melt the crusty outer skin off of their beautiful bodies. This process sterilizes and beautifies their skin which is essential to mating.

On the second moon of planet 1029-A, gravitational forces from the largest moon and the planet itself have constantly pushed and pulled it in every direction. The end result of these massive forces on this tiny moon has been a constant rupturing of the fragile surface. These ruptures continuously pour the molten core of this satellite out into seas of lava. Among the many species that have thrived on this volatile moon, the Axe Glider has evolved some interesting specialized skills. With the Mag Crab as part of its diet, the Axe Glider is believed to use the residual magnetic properties of these crabs to create a natural "magnetic resonance imaging" effect. Used as a dolphin would use its echolocation, the Axe Glider is capable of literally seeing through the lava. With powerful flippers, it propels itself over 100 ft into the air in the substantially lower gravity of its habitat. Gliding down, it uses its MRI abilities to peer through the thick lava and find the next meal. Once found, the Axe Glider goes into a controlled dive. Using the axe shaped head to slice through the lava towards its intended prey. Though it is called the Axe Glider, this creature spends the majority of its time swimming and playing around with others of its kind.

The Lava Swimmer is a solitary beast of the deep. Far below active volcanos it slowly moves through the molten lava filtering clouds of tasty mineral from the burning rock with it's massive net like mouth. It's moves by way of a long undulating frill around it's body. It is bioluminescent but reverse to what we've seen in the trenches of the ocean, in that the brightest area is below it, so from above, it glows and blends in with it's surroundings. It uses it's long glowing 'lure' to attract a male of it's species, which is much slimmer and smaller in stature. Little is known of the Lava Swimmer's mating habits, young, or behaviour.

We had no idea that the core of our planet could sustain its own ecosystem...The Lava Swimmer is the apex hunter in the core of most earthlike planets. It hunts whale like creatures of pure light and energy to sustain it own internal core. The activity of the Lava Swimmers often triggers volcanic eruptions on the planets surface. No one knows how life can exist in such harsh conditions, but as Ian Malcom said in Jurassic Park..."Life will find a way." Man I suck at writing these things! Oh well just havin fun...

"Nothing should survive in such high temperature environment, however the internal structure of this mystic beast is beyond the understanding of men. While all creature must consume food to create energy to survive, the beast feeds on perhaps the purest form of energy, heat. Similar to plants, which require sunshine and water, in a mythical world, the closest thing that is a combination of the sun and water, would perhaps be lava. It's internal organs, if they can even be called organs, transform the heat into energy to "power" up this unique creature. The Lava swimmer is a slow moving beast, and swims as if it has lost its soul. Where did it come from, why did it choose to exist in such lonely world where no other lifeform exist... that's a story for another time..."

The Agnithorian
In 2450 deep space explorations lead to the discovery of the phenomena Lava Clouds, later named Space Furies. At first found floating freely in the dark heavens of Alpha Serax System, the huge clouds of magma gases and lava meteorites were thought to hold nothing of interest. But as unmanned space probes ventured deeper into these vast infernos, readings of enormous creatures emerged. NASA artist tried for decades to visualise these extreme life-forms, from the data gathered. Critics however, said that the vivid concepts of these artists were on the verge of the ridiculous, and that no such life-form could possibly swim about in the fiery lavas of space. The Agnithorian attacks had then yet to commence.

Agartha is a legendary city that is said to reside in the Earth's core.
The Magma Swimmer (Lava Swimmer) is much like Agartha considered a myth by sience, but is well documented in Islandic sagas as the Jordur meaning "from the depths of earth". It lives near the core of the planet and feeds on Magma*.
*Magma is a complex high-temperature fluid substance. Temperatures of most magmas are in the range 700°C to 1300°C.
The Magma is then filtered through this creature and turned in to subatomic particles.
This amazing creature said to be older than the earth alone... That is, it developed in the past when the earth was still a star without a crust.

As the earth's atmosphere heats up many creatures have learnt to survive the rising temperatures but none so much as the Lava Swimmer which adapted from crustaceans found around hot vents deep in the ocean. It has an extremely thick shell to survive such high temperatures. Lava Swimmers have no predators as nothing else bigger than it can survive the perilous conditions. They eat the hardened and cooling lava at the edge of the flow that has begun to release it's nutrients.

But there is a threat greater than the fiery liquid they tempt everyday.
A young Kolympopyrobolosauris (Kolympo-pyrobolo-sauris)witnesses her mother in the act of hunting the only prey that is foolish enough to venture into this the most treacherous and unforgiving environment. This creature has no fossil record as its body including its bones are instantly dissolved by the lava as soon as it dies. Very little is known about this elusive and impossible to track animal, including where it came from. And while its discovery is very recent, there are already multiple theories as to how it survived the unsurvivable.

Now and then he jumps out of the volcano to scare the villagers and trick them into thinking that the volcano is on the verge of erupting. The villagers then take a sacrifice and throw it into the volcano to appease what they think is the volcano god. The Lava swimmer or Fire Demon feeds off of the spirits of these sacrificial offerings. Discovered in the late 22nd Century by the Underground Expedition Collective, the Basalt Dragons seem to get larger, the closer to the planet core they live.
Although appearing to have all the standard features (eyes, mouth, nose etc) the food source of these creatures is still undetermined. It seems they live purely on energy gained by the lava and heat of it's surrounding. It appears they can only survive near the lava and in such heat. Any attempts to remove a Basalt Dragon from its habitat resulted in it dying before reaching its destination.
As the Basalt Dragon exists both in and out of lava, it gradually builds up an outer shell of rock built up from lava cooling down before it falls of the creature, turning into rock which does break down over time but still accumulates making the older creatures easier to distinguish.
Regular research and surveillance of these creatures is made almost impossible due to the extreme risk environment they live in.

Laduvian Turtle
This creature might look like an ordinary turtle from earth after which it is named, but the only resamblance can be found in the fact that it has a hard outer shell and four flippers. The Laduvian Turtle has made a living in the intense heat on the 2nd moon of the planet Ndrona and can be found near its many lava-lakes.
Little is known about this creature because the harsh and for humans toxic environment makes a thorough study of it almost impossible. Scientists have however established some facts about its metabolism by autopsy.
The Laduvian Turtles' main food source is the ash and molten rock near volcano eruptions, from which it filters the minerals. To 'digest' this the turtle needs the heat of the lava, which is the reason it swims around in the lava, a feat that still astonishes most scientists since it was believed that no creature of a size bigger than bacteria could survive such heat.
The turtle deals with the heat in a clever way: part of the minerals it eats get turned into the cristals that grow on its back. The cristal is basically a giant heat radiator; scientists found the cristals conduct heat 3 times better than any metal. The air above the lava lakes is considerably lower than the lava itself, and although it still is very hot, the Laduvian turtle somehow manages to stay alive this way. The cristal contains bloodvessels and by regulating the amount of blood it pumps into them the turtle dampens out any temperature fluctuations.
The shell is its main protetion against the heat however. Inevatably part of it melts when it enters the lava lakes but as it crawls on land again the molten parts solidify and the shell becomes whole again. It also protects it against the superheated gas that is bubbling to the surface of the lava-lakes.
The crystals on its back serve a second purpose: during the mating season the turtles will burn a mixture of the minerals inside, which causes the cristals on its back to light up in the most fantastic colors. Lately however, shells of the back of this amazing creature have mysteriously turned up on the black market, because its cristals make for unique and exotic lamps which can be sold for large amount of money. Hunting these creatures is illegal by intergallactic law.

In Island, there was an old legend. The lava swimmers, huge whales, were swimming in the inner ground ocean. Like any other whales, they had to breathe. So, from time to time, they smashed up the earth's crust, spraying lava (or hot water) from their fan. This was supposed to be the origin of volcanos and geysers.

Left to their own devices, Lava Dragons are perfectly happy just swimming about in molten rock and metals. Though they are not predatory dragons by nature, the few known to live within volcanos will stir things up from time to time to encourage locals to chuck sacrifices of tasty morsels into the caldera.
Shown here is the Lava Dragon King, Magmathrax. On his massive chin he bears many swirling carvings, each made by a different female mate. These are the sigils of the world serpent and signs of dragon royalty among the Lava Dragons.

Their thick skin is the hardest known to any creature, this also serves in the king's protection. The lava's extreme temperature serves as therapy for the Queretaro's body. Walking around with all that weight to carry can be tough on their legs.

The Lava swimmer is a large animal which spends it's entire life in the magma sea. It's closest relative seems to be the whale, but since it lives in magma scientist have only been able to take small tissue samples.
The oldest Lava swimmer ever sampled was about 320 years old. The high age of these animals is most likely a result of the germ free enviroment and believed ability to absorb pure energy from the magma.
Observations indicates that it's a very playful and mellow animal.

concept:

The fluorescent Butterfly Eel is a gigantic creature that resides within the depths of magma beneath the earth. It captures particles of oxygen by sticking its end above the flowing lava, and by wiggling its tail, to allow sufficient gas exchange to take place, before swimming down again. Its colourful skin is shiny and fluorescent, and during the mating seasons, it swims onto the surface of the lava, and arches its tail into the air to show off to the watching female the colourful patterns which line its length. Its length spans 10 - 15 metres.

concept:

Recently found in an ill state, or so it would appear, off the coast of italy, on a volcanic island known by some as Stromboli. It was found within close proximity to a lava flow, In what appeared to be a dilerious state. After a small duration, it is said to have shed it's hardened outer layer and, in a liquid form, the likes of which resembled molten lava, found it's way back to the lava flow. It has been dubbed by some, "Anguilla Rovente".

concept:
Croguarm
The croguarm has no eyes with with to see as they would be far to sensitive. It does have sensory pads on face as well as receptive feelers sprouting from along the back and down through the tail (these can me pulled back into body at any time) and a small patch on its chin. It uses these to locate itself in the lava, also to find food and outcroppings and caves in wich to hole up for months at a time.
Lives long periods crammed up under the earths crust, eating coal andother minerals which then form red diamonds in a crown in its skull and over its body as well as imbedded within its crust like skin to help protect itself. Ocasionally it will venture forth to find other creatures that thrive in the magma channels to consume as it needs the protien during the mating seasons in order to gernerate reproductive sperm.

not accepted entries:

All WIPs/sketches/not finished yet/placeholder/yaddayaddayadda images...

This is a weekly activity, please take time to polish your works as a finished artwork not a sketch or rushed image.

Usuall a description is not needed if the image is self-explaining, but there was no obvious "function" of the creature, which of its special design needs an explanation for the viewer.

The topic was referring to creatures which are swimming in lava...nice idea and entry though

I am trying to pull COW back to the quality level it had once...thus i will watch for the quality of an entry much stricter than before.

That is why we have so many rejections this time. Don't be frustrated, it's all for the sake of COW and your art

WoW! Great round this one! Voted Njoo, cuz it doesn't get better than that.
yoitisi would be my seccond choice, cuz I really like the flow in the lines here. Hard to beat that on a computer..
Stephen R is allso a real nice one with a cool concept to it... but I prefer the graphic style that njoo delivers this time, simply the best.

though there were some crazy excellent pieces this round,
Njoo just had no competition, IMHO.
got me vote and tons of respect.

cheers,

My vote is for Njoo. First the render is fantastic. Second the beast looks nice and primal to me. It seems that a creature who evolved in lava would be a freak of nature, a fossil that never admitted Darwin wouldn't approve of its existence.

I voted for Scorge.

I like the fact that it´s no stone-like creature with lava shining through the plate skin, just like two third of the entries here seem to be. Also, scorge´s one is very very well done and has a realistic fell to it. It is really close to the topic because it totally is a swimmer. There are also some other animals, which are giving the image a lively feeling.

I voted dragon4lunch. Something about it made me laugh and I really appreciated the style. It reminded me somehow of illustrations I saw as a little kid.
njoo: yours looks awesome! thanks for the crit!!
Other favs are BlkCelebration, Vorace, and VegasMike.

I really liked a good number of the pieces. Njoo's, Chuck, mate's, Vorace's, VegasMike's all have that top notch quality. Carnifex's as well looks like what I think could really survive in lava. Nisse-Bula's Disney-esque entry is nice too but needed punch. Over all Stephen R's had the Wow factor for me, Great color and action. I am continually amazed at & by this place, & am striving to quicken my pace. (I'll post some of my unfinished's soon.) & Njoo thanks for the kick'n tutorial.

Wow, there are so many awesome entries for this round!!! Njoo got my vote, cause you know...it's freakin awesome.

Woodlandwalker Cool design for the creature, I like the idea of having sensors. The background seems like it didn't really matter to you, but usually a great creature design with a well thought-out background does much better in the polls.

J.A.G The picture seems very rough and unfinished, I think you should spend more time on future contests. The concept is well-thought out though.

Tommoy The composition could use some work, and it seems that you overused the custom brushes.

Chuck, mate I like the design of the creature, especially the glowing lines of lava through the skin. I don't really like the way the tail looks, but only cause I like flowing things so that's just me lol. I don't think the canvas texture works that well with your style because it's very digital, but it's a rockin' piece.

Carnifex Whooa that things look scary, I really like the design! I also love that little shot in the corner, it looks like a real picture, haha. I think there's a little compression on the outline of the creature, and I wish it had a background for the bigger picture, but other than that it's great.

jfwalls I wish I could see the whole creature and I think that the sky looks empty. Other than that, I think that it's good, and I like that the creature has a rider, I don't believe any other entries have that.

Stephan_R I really like the design of this creature, I think it's awesome. I like the colors and the way it flows. The only think that looks off to me is the fact that there is defined lineart on the face, especially on the mouth, and I don't think it fits, because that lineart is nowhere else. there are also other parts on his fins that have much sharper definitions than others. Other than that I love.

Kasen Kato I really wish the creature had more definition and shading because it really has a nice design. The coloring looks very flat and the background does not match with it because you did not make it. It looks like a mix between a lava lamp and red blood cells. I really wish it had shading, lighting, light source, etc. because I loved the sketch of the creature.

Vorace I love the concept and the design! The contrast between the ice and the lava is stands out pleasantly and the angle of the picture with the position of the creature has a nice feel to it. The only thing I have to say is that the lineart on the outside of the creature really doesn't fit, but this is great stuff.

VisualSurreality I think it needs a lot more work, it's way too blurred and too soft. It doesn't look realistic. I do like the design of the creature though.

cannibalcandy I like the design because I like flowy things, and if those are his eyes, I like the placement because it is different, but I know you could have done a lot more with this picture because you're really awesome.

VegasMike I love this one! It was close to getting my vote. I love the design and the way it looks like it is flying through the lava. The colors are great. I only wish that you took the same daring moves as you did with your heart harvester.

njoo You got my vote because this is awesome. Your texture works so well with your art because you already had a painted look before your piece was done, and I think it works to complete the overall feel.

Cloister I like yours! The way the lava is glowing out the gills is a really nice touch.

Ikuru I really love the way yours feels and your creature is cool! I like this one a lot.

Trickmonkey The details seem kinda "burn tooled", they're too black or too bright, try to do shading and lighting with your own colors, because it is noticeable.

[B]Lighty[B] the background seems a bit rushed, but I do like the view underneath the lava, although the perspective seems a bit off...I wouldn't know how to fix it though ^^;;;

ChoaticKnight Love the contrast, I like the composition as well. The only thing I have a gripe about is that this looks rushed.

gnahz- I like the sense of movement, but again, this looks rushed.

DBaker I REALLY like the feel of this, the gritty texture is working for me. The creature does not strike me as a swimmer, but you did a great job with the rendering and all that jazz.

scorge I love this one. The creature is great and the overall feel is very realistic as Vyse stated. I wish the lava he was jumping out of has more movement to it, that is the only thing that throws it off.

poinko It's cute, but it is too cartoony, I can't really take it seriously..

Ham-e It seems a bit rushed, but good effort

ATandersonThe design is pretty cool, but the background could use some more definition. I'm also glad tou put a little silhoutte for the creature, because I couldn't really see the body at all...

yoitsi Wow, I like it! Your crystals look great, you have very lovely linework.

Marco I like this one, it really looks like you were in the process of trying to finish this, if you had finished it, it would have been great...that's very unfortunate ;_;

Spitch I like the feel of this, it's creepy, but i really wish most of the monster was not silhoutted..

dragon Wow, you really went all out on the detail, I wish I could give my vote to more than one contestant ;_; I love this one...for some reason it looks like that spear thing is disrupting the flow of the picture...

TomCardin I don't really prefer this background, but the creature is cute, he reminds me of a chinese dragon.

Arc the design reminds me a lot of Chuck's, your's is very simple though..there feels like it needs more going on

Blkcelebration I really like this one, I love his face hahaha. The grainy feel always pleases the eye when used right ^^

Nisse-Bula The creature is very cartoony, but well-done cartoony, I just wish it had more contrast...

amer-nazri It seems that you got a hold of some custom brushes and went wild with them...you shouldn't use them that way, it is obvious. Try to mix custom with some regular brushes to create a nice even feel.

GengisKwan I almost missed you because your creature was so small...it's rendered well enough, but the design is very simple...it's a rock turtle basically..

Death(lol, Death) I like your design, but it looks very blurred in a lot of areas.. try defining them a little more..

Borax I'm really loving the unique design, it's very festive, haha. The only thing is that the tentacle pieces seem way too sharply rendered, and they stand out more than they should. Also, I kinda wish the COW description was typed inteasd of hand-lettered.

Wheeeeewww.. hopefully no one kills me just trying to help. I have many many areas to improve in myself, so I don't think highly of myself or lowly of anyone else. That took a while...good luck everyone!!!

Voted for vegasmike for the nice design and energetic image!
Other favorites:
Chuckmate: I like the color and the pattern on the creature.
stephenR: good looking creature, wish there is a little more texture on it.
cannibalcandy: great creature design, love it!
njoo: I don't really need to say anything great work as usual. The bubbles and breath? coming outta is snout is a really nice touch.
cloister: good creature design and depth.
ikuru: very nice rendering, good textures. Looks like you really spent some time on this.
dragon4lunch: good rendering. I feel the light on the left and the flag pole are too much vertical seperation for the image.
blkcelebration: A lovely face your creature has! I like the painterly effect of your image.
death: I like the creature a lot, wish there is a background accompanying him.

Hmmm, hey guys.....
Yea, Njoo´s is really damn good, but i´d like to know if he would have won without doing a tutorial. By that i mean, some votes may have been done just by sympathy, as a "thank you!" or something alike.
Dont misunderstand me, maybe he should win just beacuse of the effort, but i think some people are maybe got blended and didnt really compare his work with others. So for the future i would suggest to post the COW tutorials after the vote.

Please dont be mad at me Njoo, your victory still is earned, i really do like your artwork

Vyse, that thought came to my mind as well. I'm sure njoo would have won regardless, just maybe with a few votes less. People like me who put a lot of work into their piece and felt good about it could have used some of those votes

I'm gonna try my hand at doing a mass crit.

Woodland: I still preferred the original WIP you had posted over your final. There's great form and volume in the line art you have, but it all gets lost in the colored version, and the creature ends up being flattened out.

JAG: I like the nice simple design, but I think some stronger highlights and color using oranges and yellows would help. Some subtle texture on the shell would be good also.

Tommoy: I like how you're using the textures, but they become a little repetitive, and combined with the softness of your other brush strokes don't work well in defining a surface to the creature. Your design is interesting, but I would like to see some stronger colors though.

Chuck, mate: Great creature, but I still think he feels too separate from the background. Also, it's two flippers look almost completely different. I do really like the texture/pattern on it though.

Carnifex: Cool design, and it definitely looks like something that could live in lava. The main thing that I see is I don't really like all the little noodly lines you added for detail. I can see interesting shapes and textures in there, but a lot of the lines just seem really random, and don't follow those larger shapes.

jfwalls: Great job! You should be the winner!

Stephan_R: Not a lot to crit really. Love the colors and detail on this piece. Maybe some more texture in the background is the only thing I can really think of. Oh yeah, and I'd like to see more of the creature without it's ashy skin.

Kasen Kato: I actually really like the look of the rocky scales, but they're all the same color. Add some yellow and orange highlights to fix that. I would definitely lose that background too, it has too much detail and overpowers your creature.

Vorace: Awesome design and idea! I love the colors, and the only thing I can really say is that maybe a little more detail where it's coming out of the lava would be cool.

VirtualSurreality: I like the head of the creature, but compared to it's body and tail I think it's a little oversized. I also think the body feels a little flattened out, and could use some more volume. Your lava could use some more color also.

cannibalcandy: Another one that looks really cool. I especially like the head and mouth. My only crit is that it just doesn't really feel like it's swimming through lava.

VegasMike:Hmmm...I hate trying to find something to crit on yours. Hmmm...nope nothing. Good Job!

njoo:Awesome image, but I'm sure you know that by now. The only thing I thought was that some darker colors like red or something would've been nice on the front portion of the creature.

Cloister:You got my vote. I loved the lighting, and the wicked look of your monster.

Ikuru: Nice job on the coloring. The only thing that is a real drawback is the design of your creature I think. Other than the head, it's just kind of boring.

trickmonkey: Inresting creature, but my main problem is that it's hard to make out the details on the creature. Work on defining those forms more.

Lighty: Very good for 14, but don't let it go to your head. Continue working on defining your shapes, and your basic principles of perspective and lighting.

ChaoticKnight:I like the face of the creature a lot, but it's body seems to narrow too much as you move back from the head. Your coloring has a WIP feel to it, and I think you could go back and really add some nice detail to creature and lava.

gnahz:For me the design is too close to a squid or cuttlefish, and it looks more like it's floating above the lava rather than in it. I'd also watch on how much you let your pencils show through, right now it has a kind of unfinished look it.

D-BAKER: Great textures! I just don't think there's enough detail on the creature right now though. That hump of cloud above it's back is making it look like one of those dinosaurs with a sail on its back too.

scorge:The lava waterall with the pterodactyls in front, and the front portion of the creature look great. However, the beast seems to flatten out as you look towards its tail. I also think you could lose the steamy smoke trails, and replace them with lava for a cooler look. Finally, the lava, especially where the beast is jumping out needs some more love.

poinko:I think your creature design is just too close to a whale with some things added here and there. Also, too much white in the coloring.

Ham-e:I really like yours too. I think some harder edges around its face and head would be nice though. Too much smudging right now.

ATAnderson:Pretty cool. I just wish there was some more definition too its form. Without the little silhouette in the corner I wouldn't be able to tell what it looks like.

yoitisi:Not a whole lot to crit. I really like the design, and great job using REAL colors! I would've liked to see more yellow in the highlights though.

Marco Mazzoni:I really like the environment you've got around the creature, and the beast itself feels really heavy. I just wish that there was some of that orange and yellow light reflecting off his underside. A description would be nice also.

Spitch:Nice and simple design. I like it. You've got a great little hint of detail on the nose and flipper of the creature, but that's it. More detail!

dragon4lunch:I like your image a lot too, and it does have a real cool old school D&D or album cover feel to it. However, the creature does get lost in the background some. The guy standing in the cave on the left adds so much mystery to it that I want more story.

TomCardin:This has a great children's book quality that I like, but too much white. It also feels a little disconnected from the background, and not like its really "in" the lava.

-Ark-:Interesting design, but it doesn't really feel like it's in lava. It's also a little difficult to pick out the shapes because of the overall similar approach you used to color the creature.

Genghis Kwan:This is another one I really liked because of the simplicity. It makes me think of Pokemon creatures (no offense). I think that's it's only drawback is that it's basically just a turtle made out of rock, but then again that's why I like it. Oh what a paradox!

BlkCelebration:Another really cool image! There were just so many this round. Not a lot to crit really. I personally don't like the whiskers, but that's about it. Great job making it look like its swimming though.

Nisse-Bula:I really like the way you've colored and shaded the creature. The background is nice also, but the lava just doesn't work, and the perspective between the creature, the ground, and the background is all off. That hard line where the creature meets the ground doesn't help either.

amer-nazri:This one isn't as strong as some of your past images. There's just way too much "soft brush" action going on in this one. Tighten up and define the creature more it it''l be 100% better.

Death:Cool creature, and it's colored nicely. It would look much better to if you would've presented against a different BG though. Just some quick passes with some textured brushes for some lava effects would've been nice.

Borax: My main crit for creature is that it's just too much. There's too many different things going on with it. A favorite quote of mine is,"A good design doesn't mean there's nothing left to add, but nothing more to take away." I guess in some situations it might not apply, but it's a pretty good idea to remember when designing something.

WOW! That took a long time to do. I'm gonna go take a nap now.
