Hi everyone. Being from a spanish speaking country, I had never heard of these novels, so at first I did not understand if the "bear" term was simply like a nickname, but this character was human. So, for anyone else who didn´t understand this too well, I found this extra bit of info:

"In Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials novels, the Panserbjørne (armoured bears in Danish) are large polar bears who almost always wear their robust armour. They have opposable thumbs on their front paws. Despite their large digits and immense strength they have remarkable dexterity. This, together with an innate sense of metallurgy, makes them exceptional metalsmiths, and they are capable of creating and repairing metal items far beyond the capabilities of human smiths. They are highly intelligent and, whilst they mainly appear to speak English, have been shown to speak in a number of indigenous languages." Hope it helps. cool topic.

One thing I don´t get is... is he always on his 4 paws, or does he walk like a human? thanks

    More info

For anyone wanting more detail, here's the wikipedia entry.

    And the answers.com entry

Lastly, a link to the author's site, with shots of the book covers.

These left me believing that the character is, in fact, a quadruped ursine creature, though one capable of wielding tools (no opposable thumb, and uses tools? er?) and as cognizant as a human.

Artifex, it's actually stated in the books that they DO have opposable thumbs. They're not exactly as normal bears. But, even normal bears, being quadruped and all, can stand in two legs as far as I know.

    Lovely topic!!!

I went and checked out the first book at the library just now. Massive Black's take on this stuff was awesome, so I'm more scared than usual of attempting this, but I'll give it a shot.

    awesome, chuck.

this is just me messing around without actually looking at armor, bears, or anything helpful.

maybe i'll flesh something out with references.

In the book he is on four legs for travel. Pullman doesn't ever say he is on two legs at such and such a point in the story but I got the impression of him on two legs when the would describe him as towering over his foes.

    Design in progress.

And my final. I went for a little more conventional inspiration; classic plate armor wth the occasional nod to a samurai's yoroi. I considered an underlying suit of chain mail, but I figured it would be highly uncomfortable, constantly getting one's fur caught and pulled out in the links. Instead, I'm going to go with a series of gliding plates bolted to a soft leather backing. I also wanted to make something more suited to quadrupedal movement, but which would allow the character to rear up on his hind legs when necessary.

All in all, not exactly to the level of refinement I would like, especially after a healthy dose of second-guessing by my wife, whose read the books and understands the character much better than I did. Regardless, I'm pleased overall with where I've gotten to these past six days, and I look forward to perfecting my craft on these projects in the future.

i think that the topic is great. for the ones who did not had the chance to read those works (me included) it's time to get reading.
You will never know what in real life a job opportunity will be.
Not everyone will ask for robots and orcs.

    Thake it like this:
you have one week to pitch one entry - if you get selected.. you will get the contract to illustrate the book, and to be the lead conceptartist for the game and the movie based on the written work. complains? :p

Thanks Rafaeljm and Artfex33, saved me some searching, I'v not come across these either. Sounds pretty cool, am I to take that Sky Iron is just light blue metal, no other properties we have to capture? Also another stupid question, but is this more medieval or like steam punk, I was just reading about him being possibly 'gunned' down, confused me as to the setting. (sorry Im a touch tired at present)
EDIT: Sorry, read on through another page said 'reseambles 19th century'

Chuck Wadley Nice start dude, really like the hinted background as is man, good stuff!

    Cheers

    From wikipedia:

As a bear instead of a human, he has no dæmon; instead, his soul constitutes his armour, which he himself shapes.

So it's spiritual armour? Metal embued with some kind of etherial power?

matias: he is present day in yime period but is from an alternate earth which has a decidely steampunk feel. zepelins and guns etc. He himslef is not steampunky per say but go with whatever you fancy. I just checked the film concept art of him and was suprsed by their interpretation.
