    hey everyone,

This is coming along, still have quite a bit to do to finish this ortho up, trying to get exactly what my instructor has asked for (he sorta wants a pretty picture type of deal) haha. Anyway comments and crits welcome, especially before I finish the thing!

p.s. I know the side view so far is not looking correct as far as the design goes of the armor, I started doing it before I made all the back view changes and such, so Now I much re-draw it.

These last couple posts are great. I'm liking what I see on those armour studies. I think you should choose on of those and draw a larger more refined version with lots of detail. I think it would be a nice project. The ortho conept looks good, although I'd like to see a more closeup version. I think the overall design looks good, but arms seem to be a bit bland compared to the rest of the body. The armor on his legs and around the neck has some nice detail and I think if you added something like that to the arms, it might balance it out a little better.

How you rendered the overall form looks great. I also think you should play with the color a bit. Do some tweaks and see what I looks like with a bit more saturation, try to richen Up the color. Keep sketching warrior style, don't stop drawing. And thanks for the ongwinded post in my SB too. haha.

FactorZero - Hey man. You know that sounds like a really good idea, maybe if I get some time I can do some paint studies of armor as well. The reason teh ortho is so small is cause it isn't done yet. I am still working, on it. That is just a work in progress type of deal. As for the desing, the way I envision the character moving from a design stanpoint, a lot of that detail would get lost, and serve no purpose, as it would never be seen. But I will keep that in mind. As for color, this is not a "painting" it is an ortho, the skin is pretty much what i would use for my diffuse texture anything else would be done in the spec map, so i am really trying to avoid contrast here.

I know those sound like a lot of excuses, they are things I will keep in mind for more personal stuff, but it is for a class, adn I am following what the instructor is asking me to do, since this is going to put into 3D.

WARRIOR STYLE FOR LIFE!!!!! HAHA and no prob man, thanks for leaving me a pretty good one. It is what we all need to do and hear.

Hey everyone! So it has been quite awhile since I have posted in my own sketchbook. lol. This is a wip of what I am doing for the chow this week. It is my first attempt at something cartoony in a couple of years. On a personal note. I just graduated from college,so I got some time on my hands to work on stuff like this while I try to find myself a job. Also I started a blogspot that is a bit more in depth as to what I am doing. Anyway along with this post I am posting the bio I did for this guy before I started drawing him. It saved me a lot of time, and really helped speed up the thinking process. ...I recommend it. I am no Pro at concept art, but I think it works hehe. Anyway, from silhouettes to my first line art rough. I am gonna do another one here. Back to sketchin...cheers!

Hey everyone, here is the second rough I was talking about. I think I like it beter I was more warmed up, So I think it is a better drawing I guess. But the first one might fit my brief better. haha I dn. hopefully one of you can decide for me lol. Anyway I know that I have dictated little to no form in both wips, thats next, just taking baby steps right now, trying to get a process going. comments and crits welcome.

    The Mind Has Settled

For the past four years I have struggled with the thought.."do I want to be a concept artist, or do I want to be a 3D artist?" I tried to get as good at both as I could. To be honest the goal of being a character artist is a very very recent thing. I think it was really more of a buy product of how much life drawing and anatomy studies I did in my 2D pursuit. Then came along a little thing called sculpting, followed by a tool named z-brush. I have had a love of digital and traditional sculpting forever, but I tried to hide it as best I could by never really doing much with it (in public) and by focusing in an area I was improving leaps and bounds in but still struggled. Sculpting and Digital brush modeling have seemingly come very naturally to me, but for the longest time I denied it. Running from fate I guess. I want to place the disclaimer that these next few thoughts are not of arrogance. Just thoughts in my head. I know I am not at the super professional level yet. That said I shall continue. I didn't like being good at digital sculpting or traditional sculpting for that matter. I didn't like being able to slam out base meshes quickly without every practicing modeling. Why? Because it was not my goal and that frustrated me to no end. I wanted...want to do concept. But now I have come to a place of aceptance. I am never calmer or happier then when I am in zbrush or I am constructing a new character. There I said it lol. Really though, it is the most relaxing thing I can do with my time. I enjoy it. And I am not gonna run from my secret love anymore. I still want to do concept. I still want to be the best 2D artist I can be. But right now, I want that to be just a fun hobby I use to make my 3D better. One day I will journey back down the 2D road. But for now I will just dabble and continue life drawing and studying, but nothing more. For 3D really has become a burning passion, and one that seems attainable. I want to be a character artist. I want to make the heroes my friends run around as in their games, and the fiends they see in their favorite movies. And just typing this, I feel a great amount of stress lifting up and away, as finally I realize what bath to continue my journey down. No worries though. I can never give up 2D, I shall continue to draw and paint. But for right now, I don't wanna try to make doing that my living. So here is a w.i.p. of a character I am currently working on. This ia about 4 - 5 hours in, and I have a lot more to go before his head is complete. But I figure it's a good way to kick things off.

That zbrush sculpt is awesome. It's good to lay down your feelings - it's your "Sketchbook" a public one, but still. It would be realistic for you to put your feelings down in your sketchpad so you should be able to do it here, as well. : ) I know just how you feel. I have been torn between the decision for a while, too. You really have to decide which road you're going to pursue. I've been trying to stretch my 2D skills and 3D at the same time, and it's pretty hard to get *really* good at both. I love modeling and texturing, and even laying out UV's. Building stuff from scratch in 3D is so fun. However, I love painting. So it's a rough call. But in the end, I'll probably lean more towards 3D, like you, but never abandon 2D. They really go hand in hand. Keep up the fantastic work. You're on a great path. : ) On a more technical side, I think the bump in the back of his head looks a little odd, and might look better if it were just smoothed out and kept hollow all the way around. But it also looks like a concept sculpt, so you can't really crit that. : P How did you make the base mesh? Zspheres? Another program? Just curious. : D

So Yep. Keep Truckin. I'll watch this thread.

Well, itís been about 9 years since my last post on here. It looks as though quite a lot has changed. I look around and see ruins of a once great place. I investigated the fall. While I may have my opinions, the truth is I haven't been involved in the community since about 2009 due to my own life. I came here back in the day for the same reason I came back today, not to make friends but to grow. I just want a place to post and seek the lessons that are still buried on these forums if you know where to look.

I hope that greatness comes through these forums again and I hope that it still has the magical ability to create beasts.

My previous post in this thread before was the rambling of a dumb whiny child who didn't understand hard work. I did call out that I would come back though. Some part of me knew I had to go get a bunch of dumb out of my system so I could come back to this with full commitment. I plan on posting my progress here, any help/comments would be greatly appreciated.

    Keep it humble,

    -Joe Solo

Welcome back! I think everyone is dealing with trying to overcome their own dumbness. This place isn't the same as it used to be, and bringing any kind of greatness back seems to rest on our collective shoulders instead of those who came before. Those are big shoes to fill.

A lot of gestures and 2 45 minute value studies

Here is about 2 weeks of gestures and x2, 45 minutes value studies from master paintings. I did the paintings last night. I did not sample values from the paintings. I eyeballed them.

The gestures I have been doing over the past 2 weeks. I have more still from this weekend but I need to take pics. Comments and crits welcome/wanted.

My painting skills are ass. It's okay to say it. You are seeing my shame lol. I will get better.

    Value Studies

Did 3 more value studies so far this week. These are all painted basically at the size I am posting them. I have more gesture. drawings but I still need to take pictures. These studies could use better proportion, the use of a more opaque brush, and I should be trying to pay more attention to my values. I think my placement of some things could use some work as well. Comments and crits welcome everyone.

    Thanks for the support @David_Ray.
