a little bit form each once more i see!!
totally love your poses and your portraits!!

those still life and anatomy studies are, of course , awesome too! i just would like to be picky, and suggest you do more details, especially on those still life; really looking at the details and trying to draw them gives you a different understanding of texture; and if it's one thing i learned from drawing my traditional clocks, is that nothing gives more the impression of texture than a good interpretation of light and shade (hope i made sense!!)

    n have a nice day~!
n thanks for considering my comm full of energy~!!

Nicky S: Thanks for the comment, my friend...too bad that never went anywhere... I just ran into a lot of problems and sadly became discouraged. Frustrating piece...

Peter Berkovski: I've been doing well, I hope you're doing the same! I'll do my best!

Walid D: Ooh...edges...so true. Yeah....I will try to pay more attention to those. Thanks man!

hala: I find it ironic that after you abuse me for having an unproductive day I go on this posting hiatus. D: Ahhh...suck. Well...I'll pick it back up. Thanks for the crit, I'll keep those thoughts in mind!

AsaB: haha, I should...or put it on my desktop.
Yeah, I think the speed thing is really important. Speed and effectiveness...still need to work on that...
I'm hoping to have more work in that vein soon...in time...ahh...note to self: Sketch more dynamic things.

Hai: Good to hear! Thanks for the comment, mate!

BlackDelphin:No, yeah...that seems fair, though. I should really look into doing some studies in hyper detail. Just to prove to myself I can do them, you know? Makes sense. Thanks for commenting and being so full of gusto. Cheers!

    ------
more to come when I scan...I'm sorry about the absence. I've been having one of those weeks. I should just draw it out, but I've been having a rough time of doing even that. Oh well...better luck tomorrow.

great economy of brush strokes in the second to last portrait!--actually, all your work is becoming really efficient, love the photo study, and I love that creature in the first painting
hahah and that just proves abuse is not productive, encouragement is better slumps suck, just do something totally different for a little while and clear your head

    oooh, another update.

Too bad you're having one of those weeks, I really don't like those days when you want do draw, but at the same time you don't want to draw, and then for a while, all you can draw is crap, or not up to the standards you'd want it to be. But luckily it passes over after a couple of days, most of the time. Ugh, damn those days! Hehe. ^^

But the works aren't any crap here...
The first creature could use more contrast in values, it's looking kinda flat. But it probably is a fast sketch, so no further crits.
The thunderdome sketch looks good, colors enhance the general feeling, but I'm missing the feeling of depth, there's not much atmospheric perspective going on, but it's only in the early stage, so nothing you can't handle.
The study looks good, doesn't matter how long it took, as long as you learned something it's time well spent, speed comes later.
But now for the gem of this update: that first sp is looking kick ass! It reminds me of Andrew Jones's work, but that's just raw energy you've captured in that sp. All the brushstrokes, the texture from using different brushes, hmmm... My favorite so far.
And painting with oils is hard, had to do it for school some time ago, major failure... But the mouth is looking good!

Keep it up man, clear your head if you need to, and draw!

hala: Well, I appreciate it all the same, the abuse I mean. Encouragement is cool too. Today I casually sat and sketched and watched some films I haven't seen in a while...and Myth Busters...that was pretty head-clearing.

Black Delphin: In time, in time...

Jailhouserock2(Matt): Glad you liked it. Those IRC thunderdomes are a blast!

Nicky S: Thanks for the crits and the good advice, man. You always speak good sense. I'll try to make sure to improve those qualities that my work's really lacking most right now. The atmosphere thing comes up over and over again. So I guess that means I should do more landscape studies.

    Nellin: Cool, thanks!
    ----
Just the sketches I was talking about...I went kind of light today...a guilt free day of just-for-fun sketching...I'm not going to practice myself to death. If I don't love what I do, there's no point. Today I had fun, and that just felt nice...

Oh yeah, and one other thing. Thank you all so much for the support. It helps make art slumps so much easier to deal with. You guys rock.

luv mythbusters and you know what man, even though these aren't "fleshed out", they look better still. The park gestures especially are really nice, and fun to look at because you captured the most important parts of the people.
Dun work yourself to death with trying to create great pieces all the time--always do a lil bit of these free drawings all the time, or else you're gonna keep getting stuck.
what is that thing at the bottom left of the baby page? I LOVE IT. : D

Great stuff, don't have any real advice sadly, I'm just staring in awe. I love your pencils the most, your sketches and stuff. The one of the guy running form the police was pretty rad, keep up the good work. ^^

    GweNdZ: Aww, kindness, thanks, man.

BlackDelphin: Cool! Sketching from imagination gives me more patience sometimes. :3

halah man...they were doing all of the hollywood car scene myths! So many exploding things...
Anyways, thanks for the advice! You always have so much! I definitely want to avoid getting stuck in the future...no fun. Plus, I like adding to my sketchbook...thanks again.

Hyptosis: I guess I put my heart and soul most into the pencils...I enjoy them most, too. Thanks again man. Hope you've been doing well!

Just this little stuff for now...I'm going to be absent probably for the next few days. Going on vacation with my folks. I am taking my pencils and my oils paints with me, and hopefully that results in good things!

Love the painterly style, and your pencil lines on the sketches are beautiful too. Amazing stuff all around man!

Damn your SP's are just getting better and better. Do you start with lines and then fill in the colors, or values? or just jump straight into it with colors?

Heh, yes, putting that 'draw more' SP on the desktop will probably prove most effective! It certainly makes me want to draw more Speaking of SPs, this one scared the shit out of me! Haha, for some reason you remind of that vampire dude from Twilight..oh dear. But you executed it wonderfully, loved the colours and strokes!

Ah, your sketches never cease to amaze me. The ones of the babies was really well done, despite you finding them so hard. I think you really captured their...well, babiness!

It seems like you're building up speed and efficiency really fast. I mean, 20-30 min is not a whole lot of a time but you manage to build a really solid pic in that time. I'm sure you'll be kicking ass in that department in no time!

Nice sketches man, you know I love them.

Very good job on the child sketches, but I loooove the imaginary sketches, love the perspective of the guy with the glasses. Makes him look evil. ^^

Nice work on the paintings once again, they look really nice, especially for only 20 min.

Keep it up, and enjoy your vacation!

    071709 back from vacation.

pantless_wanderer: Ah, it's only a number in the end, but that's very flattering. I'll just keep enjoying the journey to having this become a 5 star sketchbook.

Braintree: I've been trying to really just go right in with the colors, about half the time I'm starting with a line drawing first though. This most recent one I did in grayscale and then played with the layers in painter for a bit. Thanks for commenting again, man. It's always a pleasure!

Mat: Oooh trading refs? That sounds like a helluva time. Yeah, now that I'm back I need to get back to doing those IRC thunderdomes too, that was a blast!

hala: I really don't normally even watch tv, but right then it was sooo worth it. Awesome.
Coon skin caps are the big fall fashion this year, just a heads up.

sebbonaparte: *high five* And thanks for stopping by again.

BlackDelphin: Hmmm...that is a theory! Makes sense!

tokotewhero: Ooh yeah the IRC thunderdome was a blast! Thanks for commenting!

AsaB: Oh god, I hope I'm not as pale as him. I think I've got more pronounced canines than the average person though...forwhatever reason. I have weird teeth I guess.
Thanks for the feedback. It means a ton. Any critiques for anything? It'd be great if you could.

NickyS: I've been having more fun with my sketchbook lately...I think that's the way it should be. It's definitely not all about studies, the imagination stuff belongs in there for sure. Thanks for commenting again!
    -----

Well I'm back from vacation...I'm feeling a bit refresh, though I think I'm coming down with a sickness. Ah well, you win some you lose some. I'm feeling excited about creating again though. So you've got more of that type of thing coming your way in the future.

    CRITIQUES PLEASE!
I want more direction for development.
My own personal critique on myself is that I think I'm just really lacking finished work. I think it's hard to seriously evaluate where my weaknesses are if I don't try to refine things once in a while. So I guess that'll be coming around...just wait.

Great stuff you last few entries here!

Like the people studies and you really captured the look of the kids/babies really well. Man kids/babies are really hard to draw! Keep it going!

Whoa latest self portrait is very expressive, I like it a lot.

That painting from life is nice, and so are the digital speed paints. You are ridiculously fast... and you're only improving. The character silhouettes are very cool, I get plenty of ideas just looking at them so you shouldn't have any trouble taking them into further stages... they're well done. You're getting good at drawing toddlers and babies as well, nice work all around. Hi five for modest mouse, I noticed it on your penciled SP.

Keep it up my friend, I love watching your progress.

Good to hear that the vacation was relaxing.

good work again, only on the first sp, it seems to me that the shape of the head is a tiny bit off. Overall the quality is good, the studies look good for 30 min. Perhaps it's worth a try to do some longer studies, some more finished ones.

Your pencil work is good, but most of the time you do only line drawings, maybe you should concentrate from time to time on the shading part some more. I'd love to see som more rendered sketches.
Also for improving you said that you need to do more finished pieces, I agree, but I need to do some more myself. Hehe ^^
Another point of improvement is environmental work, more sketches of architecture, landscapes, you're more character oriented with your work, but it can be useful to train in that area aswell.
Try to do some other stuff, maybe some cool sci-fi vehicles, just interesting stuff.

But you're doing good so far, so keep it up! I hope this helps a bit.

Glad you had a good vacation!
I agree with nicky here--your pencil sketches are lovely, but it would be nice to see maybe one or two pages with a fully rendered illustration or character or whatever. And it doesn't always have to be done in a day too, you could make one page a WIP, but i think working on something longer will a) make you feel better about not having many finished works b) make you learn more things. When you quickly go through something--you're already done with it in your head. When you got to push it to the next level, you really gotta think about "whats the next step and how do I do that", so you get a lot more out of it.

LOVE the silhouettes!!! I can't wait to see what you do with them. And the bugs--do more plz. Your style with them is awesome.

The outdoors painting study is great, definitely do more, but in this one, I can't tell what time of day it is. The light source doesn't appear to be apparent. I'm not sure if it was sunny or cloudy. Don't be afraid to exaggerate the colors too a bit if you need to. But keep in mind your light source too, since it's just as important as the colors, but I think you could use some more practice with that.

The photo studies are great, but maybe if you got some really willing friends, get one of them to model for you*doesn't have to be nude, or tell them to wear a bathing suit ;p*
You probably already know from doing self portraits that you understand the 3dimensionality of a form better from life than a photograph--again, I think it's one of those things where you will have to think differently and work differently so you will end up learning a lot more.

Hope that was helpful ^^;; kind of long but you said u wanted some direction. I'm no expert but I hoped it helped anyway. Your stuff is already great, can't wait to see how you improve upon yourself.

    Welcome back!
Haha, no worries, you're nowhere near as pale as said vampire dude. Your face is full of life and colours, promise!

Beautiful latest bunch, I admire your ventures into the realm of traditional colour! The house painting is impressive for a newcomer, although there's obviously always room for some improvement. I think you could've tried to push your values even more there, and the brush strokes might've used some more definition in places. Like the left side, it's a tad fuzzy. But as I said, great start and I hope you'll explore this further!

I think the latest SP is fantastic in terms of values and mood, but I think it's a bit off in proportions. Your chin seems unusually large and there's something odd about the nose and eyes relationship that I can't quite put my finger on! It almost seems like they're from a difference perspective, just by a biiit, but enough to make me raise an eyebrow. It still definitely looks like you and I really like that texture and slight colour variations in it, very nicely done!

Hipalien: Aren't they? Man I had a tough time with em...the learning never ceases!

sebbonaparte: Haha, yeah, I fancy myself some Modest Mouse every once in a while when I'm drawing...it's good to get feedback like this from ya. I guess I just really need to keep practicing on being as quick and descriptive as possible! Those are a concept artist's greatest tools, right?

NickyS: I think you're right...and I've kind of been doing that...in these later ones, so thanks for teh suggestion. I've been more interested in just studying and getting things right than cranking them out as fast as possible.

And again, thank you. I should definitely get out of my comfort zone more often. I guess that really just means I should do more speed paints from imagination as well as photo studies...yeah...I could stand to do some photo studies. Thanks bunches man. I look forward to hearing from you again next time!

pijus: Ahhh pff. Thanks man. I'll keep working at it, thanks for the suggestions, even if you don't have critiques at the moment. Next time though...where your critiquing pants.

    hala:WOW! direction. Thank you!
I think you're right about a LOT of things here.
I can definitely learn a lot from doing something that is really seriously finished. I haven't had many of those "how do I take this to the next level?" moments in...a long time...I usually stop short of that...waaaaaaaaay short.
I like the ideas for studies too...I'll see what I can do with that. I'd really like to do more oil portraits...really quick studies but studies nonetheless...could be really helpful. THANK YOU.

AsaB: Mmmm yeah. I appreciate you pointing out the flaws. I won't shy away from that stuff next time. Traditional stuff is hard!

Definitely got me there...I need to still watch out for those proportion flaws...man...there's always something more, isn't there? Thanks for coming by again!
    -------
So I was hoping to have more stuff to show but here's what I got. I was going to do some more oil landscape painting, but I was thwarted by the family dog that happily tramped on my makeshift palette and snapped it in two while I was setting up outside. Better luck next time, I guess.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS EVERYBODY. Seriously. You guys are awesome. It really energizes me to make me want to learn more and work harder! Thank you!
