Texahol - Hmm, you're right - it's something I struggle with definately, I always want to make every edge super crisp - god knows why. Gotta work on this, and get outta that mindset. Cheers for the crit

    mike butkus - Thanks!

OmertA - No problem, glad you stopped by mine too.

    Kielbasa - Thank you.

A little study and a little silly.

do you work low-res a lot? it will make your edges all seem a lot more fuzzy than they should be. I generally work 300 ppi @ somewhere around 3k x 2k and then when you shrink it down for web can have really crisp hard edges...

but beyond that it seems like you are in the habit of making soft edges soft just when you're not sure what the form looks like exactly. It's a really good exercise to do an ALL hard edge study [ no noodling/rendering], and be cognizant of the forms still showing properly. It will help you think through lighting on 3d form as well as hue shifts....other stuff too probably...

edges are nothing more than the result of how the overlapping forms are being lit. usually the forms will show alternating hard/soft/hard/soft blahblabla

if you are doing low res doodles, at the end if you throw a bit of unsharp mask filter on it, it goes a long way

    WOW....

So inspiring! I keep coming back and looking through your sketchbook over and over again. I just have to say, I love your digital painting style. Your brushstrokes and your colors are beautiful. Your creatures are all amazing. You somehow manage to always make the texture of their skin look right.

Beautiful work. I'll be back to see more! =)

Awesome job with the lighting on that skull - very ominous and melancholy.

I like that you've got some other colors in the skin of the last guy - try putting some of that into the middle picture!

    nice sketchbook,
I would try some texture brushes to get a more traditional feel to your work.

TheGnoll - Heh, thanks! I like that you haven't been here in a while and can see improvement since your last visit.

Cacodaemonia - Hmm I'm not all that pleased with the skull, didn't really come out as I wanted. And that guy is just a mindless doodle really, I don't think he's made of flesh - which is why he's so pasty

    Mischeviouslittleelf - Thanks!

maeshanne - I dunno about that, I kinda like digital as a medium unto itself - know what I mean?

    'Nother little doodle.

Whoa! Haha, I must say, I like the second one a lot better! The bridge of her nose (in both versions) looks funny to me, though. I did a quick redline/paintover to show you what I mean.

That last one is pretty cool. Something about double eyes is pretty cool. Neat!

Cacodaemonia - Yeah, she does have a bit of a crooked nose in real life but I've exaggerated it way too much - good catch

    Samuel Gray - Thank you.

Cacodaemonia - Heheh yeah, possibly went overboard with exaggerating the kid - still pretty fun to do though.

Camara - Thanks, glad you like em

AK86 - I dunno about that, I'm still trying to get the hang of edges I think.

Daaaamn, that Phoenix image is seriously awesome!! I've never read the story, but I have read some of Nesbit's other short stories. What's the deal with the image? Just practice, or something for a product? I'm in love with it.

Camara - Thanks for the encouragement!

Jizu - He was recognisable then?

Cacodaemonia - Oh you should read it, one of my favourites as a kid! I applied for a job working on book covers, so I set myself a task to illustrate a cover in a short space of time - so just practice really.

Demon Lizardman - Yeah, working on my own book which should be crawling with them

Giorge - Thanks, glad you like.

Tinkering with book covers again, something a little different.
*edit* Fixed the spelling, thanks Cacodaemonia!

Really good work on these bookcovers.
nice painting of the phoenix, and I like the approach on this last one.
what type of book is that for?

Hah, I love the Momotarou cover! Nitpicking: It should be mo-mo-ta-ro-u. Only problem I have is the monkey - you can't see his feet, and his butt looks really flat. Also, he doesn't look at nicely stylized as the others. Were you relying on the reference too much?

These practice book covers are great!

monotony - Thanks, they are both experiments in creating children's book covers

jatherip - Thanks for stopping by!

Cacodaemonia - Damn, I thought I should have checked the spelling, what a schoolboy error!Fixed that now, thanks for pointing it out. I used a fair bit of reference for all the animals, strange that the monkey sticks out like that.

Really not had any time this week because I'm leaving for Bolivia tomorrow, and most time was spent packing and whatnot. So apologies for this crappy update, and see you in a couple of weeks!
