    The Photo Challenge - Line

Use the rules/guidelines of composition, focusing on Line, to take the audiences eye through the picture.

Here is the kind of "Line" that I am referring too:

    Definition from http://www.great-landscape-photograp...mposition.html

    The S-Curve/Lead-in Lines

In this photo of Vancouver, the lead-in line is the wash from the ferry I was on. The Rule of Thirds was also applied and the city skyline is one-third from the top of the frame. © Gary Nugent
This technique uses a gentle curve - a path, or a river, perhaps - to 'lead the eye into the picture', though it is not necessarily particularly S-shaped. Positioning lines or objects diagonally towards the main point of interest in the scene will draw your viewer into the picture.

You can use this technique with both wide angle and telephoto lenses, but the effects will be different. Viewed from a distance through a telephoto lens, the elements of a landscape will appear to be compressed so your lead-in line needs to be bigger and more prominent to work successfully. Look at using riverbanks, streams, fences, rocks, roads, etc.

Using a wide-angle lens means you'll be much closer to the object you're using as a lead-in line, so the foreground will appear much larger in the frame. This lets you use smaller objects as a lead-in and even something like a small stream of tree branch can work well.

Lead-in lines don't have to be straight. All they need to do is lead the eye into the picture. Don't have lead-in lines going out of your picture. The viewer's eye will just follow the line and will tend not to see any other major feature in your photo.

Applied well, the S-Curve/Lead-in Line technique works surprisingly well.
    ---------------

    READ THE RULES!

    1. Only one picture per contestant.

    5. No voting for your own picture.

    6. The challenge starts thursday, poll opens tuesday and closes thursday. the winner starts a new post on the photo forum that is named "The Photo challenge - the chosen topic".

    7. The poll shall be opened tuesday evening.

    8. In the event of a tie in the polls, the person who created the challenge casts the tie breaking vote.

    9. The winner has until 18:00/6:00 pm (GMT +2) thursday, after he or she has won to present the next topic, if the winner fails to do so. the topic will be presented by the 2nd place person on the poll

Actually I prefer your first pic Sam, I liked it better.
    They are both good though.

I like the second photo, as I think it does the job of defining the sort of Line we're talking about better.

I think Sam's second one is better personally, for this topic... Just as a picture I like the first one better, but for this topic I think the second one is definitely better.

I'm still not sure about mine... Oh well, it's not like I have a chance at winning one of these anyway

Morbid, that's a nice photo and the first one that really fits the original intention of the topic too! The only thing that detracts from it is the top (the pier and whatever that partially cut-off thing is on the right)... The line leads your eye to it, but what's there isn't pleasant to look at.

After seeing the first three entries (including both of Sam's) I decided that instead of going for something to win, I'd try for something different to what I usually do. Here's a non-action photo in B&W with my "trademark" (or so I'm told) "blowing to shit" of highlights, but that's because I like it

I'm not sure if this follows the S-Curve rules but it does have a pretty significant lead-in so I thought it would work for this comp.

Thanks Fingers. I agree, the top part is not pretty.

wel i just like the way the lines in this photo interact, and it's like every element has it's role in the composition. all over a great arhitectural photo.
the only thing i don't like its the outside. the left side of the foto. to distracting
