OK, finally getting back into drawing/painting, and I could use some interaction with other artists to keep up my momentum. Glowing accolades and blistering criticisms are equally welcome.
A yamabushi with a naginata and really bad proportions.
A sci-fi/fantasy fusion-type character.
A badly scarred samurai.

for crits, in the CHOW 65 the detail level of the face draws the attention away from the simplifyed lines in the rest of the picture,
making it look kindaīboring. same goes for the bottom one, but since thats just a quickie it doesnīt mean that much.

Thanks, Chill. CHOW 65 was a bit rough; it was my first time out of the gate doing digital painting since my sophomore year at MassArt, and I jumped straight into execution without doing much in the way of preperation. I'm looking to perfect my digital painting ( lower risk of cadmium poisoning than traditional media), but I've got a way to go with managing all those layers.
Anyways, here's what I'm working on now. No disrespect to Poshspice, but his latest concept for the CHOW just doesn't hold any interest for me. So, I've skipped out this week and I'm working on my own character concept; I've been listening to Trocadero's song A Girl Named Tex all day ( anyone else here a Red vs. Blue fan?), and I'm mulling what a non-satirical version of this character might look like. Here's just a trace of shadows and proportions; details to come later.

OK, back from America, and time to start buckling down again. In the spirit of my renewed discipline, I present you a sketch for an image I've had in mind for a while...
Having fun hashing out Painter 9's functions. One of these days I'll have to muster the patience to read some tutorials.
And just for posterity's sake, an unfinished CHOW from a couple weeks ago.

Taiwanese, actually. It helped me work out my frustrations with living here by imagining Taipei under a layer of rubble and radioactive dust. Does that make me a bad person?

My wife lent me her digital camera to take some reference photos, and it's already apparent this is going to help me immensely. Now I'm just afraid that she'll download her photos to her computer, only to find several pictures of me striking kung-fu poses wearing her bathrobe.
Oh well, she's stuck with me now.

Frick'n figures. Meatsworthy was extremely late with CHOW 74, and as it turns out it his concept was exactly what I was looking for at the moment. Now the thread is closed and we're on to Bumskee's round (which, quite frankly, just doesn't excite me). Doesn't really matter; I'm off to Tokyo for a week and a half on Thursday, so I won't have the means to post anyways. Instead, I'll just be working on the following for a couple days, just for the fun of it.

The peice you were working on for the chow in post #38 and the last one really have a lot of life in them. The earlier figures seemd correct but a bit stiff. Not sure if you changed methods or medium but whatever you did keep it up! Nice work!

This most recent one was made using actual photographic references. I was previously using a program called Poser to get physical proportions, light and shadows right, but I ended up leaning too much on it, and the product always ended up a little lifeless. I had a rather long spell where I wasn't doing any painting, and in the past few months I've been experimenting with digital art. I think I'm finally refining a technique that works for me.

Your loose sketches are very nice !
The colored pics feel unfinished: everything is equally important in them. If you would put some parts in shadow (less details) and make other parts more detailed (not so fuzzy), I think that would help a great deal. Chow 63 and 78 look great, you must have worked hard on them ! But I think the coloring can still be pushed a little further. Sorry, I can't explain it better, it's not exactly my area of expertise.
Keep it up, you have a good thing going on !

Updated images of some of the characters I've got posted at the top of this thread. As for the text, well, my wife likes to write notes on my stuff when I'm not looking. Maybe I should start typing messages into her articles ( so long as someone catches them before they go to print).

I'm liking this sketchbook so far.. You really have nice lines, and I'm loving your character sketches a lot!
I would like to give you some advice on your colouring though. It looks like right now you choose a colour for the different parts of a character (skin tone, pants, shoes, top, stuff like that) and you colour everything with that colour first and then you pick a lighter and a darker value within these colours and that is your light and dark for that particular part of the character.. Please correct me if I'm wrong with this, but that's the idea I get from your colourings in this sketchbook.
Now using a few different base colours for different parts of a character is okay ofcourse. Bķt you should also pick one light source and a colour of that light which mixes with all the different base colours. Also a good thing to keep in mind is that light is never white and dark is never black. Try to use colour in your lights and darks so it doesn't become dull. Another good thing to keep in mind is that the warmth of light and dark is usually opposite. With that I mean that when you have cold light for example, the shadows will be warm(er) and vice versa.
Don't be afraid to use some more saturation while colouring! The colours can become quite muddy when they're too grey, and on skintones this can give a rather zombie look. It can be really helpful to find some artworks in colour that have nice colours in your opinion and figure out which colour schemes they're using. This has helped me a lot in understanding colours better.
Oh one other tip that just sprang into mind; when mixing two colours, don't pick the mixed tone and use that, but just saturate it a little more so the transition doesn't become dull (like this)
this tutorial is really good at explaining stuff about colours.. It's rather long and a little complicated but really really useful.
So those were the tips on colour I've gathered in my time on CA. They're the ones I use almost all the time while colouring.
One other tip (not on colour) is to vary the subject you're drawing. It's obvious that you really like character drawing and that's really good, but try to do some vehicles maybe or creatures (gah I suck at creatures need to do some ), or do some environments.. Just vary a bit
