Rey will be teaching Imaginatomy at LAAFA next quarter. The class will be focused on inventing and creating creatures using anatomical knowledge. This is a rare class that hasn't been offered in a while, so don't miss this opportunity!

A class created by Rey to augment entertainment and character designers by bringing in anatomy and mechanics into the thought process of character design… This class is designed for those who want to invent a completely imaginative animal or creature while keeping the same logic of human and animal anatomy. With Rey's excitement and deep knowledge of all things anatomical, he will guide you in first drawing, then sculpting a creature from your imagination that will make sense in terms of realism. Want to know how and why we are different from other animals, and why and how species evolve? Ask Rey.

In this class, students will learn to draw the portrait in a full tonal range with an emphasis on realism and working from source reference. The syllabus includes the use of photographic reference for the purpose of training students to use rational observation when drawing. Rational observation stresses the skills of impartial analysis when judging the appearance of a subject. Hello and happy new year! As we kick off 2011, here are some of our entertainment and illustration related classes lined up on our schedule:

COSTUMED GESTURE QUICK SKETCH with Mark Mcdonell
Live (Real-time) Online Classes Start September 8th!

Mark McDonnell’s Costumed Gesture Quick Sketch will help explain how to design and capture the essence of life through the knowledge of gesture drawing, increase observation skills and use basic design principles that will help to fuel the power of your imagination . . . all of which are important and necessary skills to have in the animation, illustration, and the entertainment industry!

    Jan 29-Mar 19, 2011

    on Sat

CARICATURE PORTRAIT DRAWING & PAINTING with John Quinn
Live (Real-time) Online Classes Start September 8th!

The focus of this class will be on developing your ability to recognize what lie beneath the surface of the portrait and learn to follow the path set by that information. While exaggeration of shapes is an important tool and a great place to start, we will dig deeper to understand why and how those shapes occur in such a specific way within each subject’s face. We will cover the basics of the anatomical structure of the human head and spend the first 3 or four weeks discussing the exaggeration of shapes and energies operating through the subject's face and head. We will learn to see rhythms and the repetition of shapes in the subject and use these to build a graphic motif or "big idea" within the portrait.

    Jan 29-Mar 19, 2011

    Meets 2:00 PM-5:00 PM
    on Sat

ENVIRONMENT CONCEPT DESIGN with Alex Ruiz
Live (Real-time) Online Classes Start September 8th!

This class will cover many aspects of environment design from the perspective of the video game, film, and television, to comic books and graphic novels. Much focus will be given to the many stages of environment design: creating thumbnails, value, composition, perspective, color theory, and storytelling.

As well, focus will be on live demos, in-class sketching, photoshop tips and tricks, digital painting, and presentation of work.

We will also cover concept art techniques used by the top concept artists in the field today. Techniques include speedpainting, brush creation in photoshop, shape language/abstract painting, and custom shapes.

    Jan 26-Mar 16, 2011

    Meets 7:00 PM-10:00 PM
    on Wed

In addition, we would also like to remind readers/viewers that we also have the following classes:

    QUICK SKETCH with Sergio Sanchez
In this course, the student will focus on the study of the head and figure through a series of gesture poses. The instructor will offer weekly in-class lectures and drawing demonstrations. Students will be introduced to the many facets of sketching the figure; line, mass, form, edges, lighting, etc. Students will be taught a series of shorthands for describing the figure to read 3-dimensionally.

Live (Real-time) Online Classes Start September 8th!
From personal experience, Sergio is one of the best instructors to learn from because he breaks information down into an extremely logical, step-by-step process. He not only tackles drawing errors, he also addresses your process and method which is crucial to achieving consistency and confidence in your drawings.

    Jan 25-Mar 15, 2011

    Meets 10:00 AM-1:00 PM
    on Tue

FORESHORTENING: DRAMATIC FIGURE STAGING with Douglas Kirk
The focus of this course will be on life drawing, primarily investigating foreshortening issues in perception and depiction. It is recognized that foreshortened forms are particularly challenging when drawing both from observation or visualizing imaginatively.

We will examine various techniques of observation that will clarify issues of form and structure that need to be addressed to depict foreshortening accurately. Compositional and dramatic possibilities are integral to the employment of foreshortening, as will be seen in examples from artists of the renaissance to the present day. The goal is to allow the artist to develop the use of foreshortening as a vital ingredient in the creative process and to make its employment an opportunity for experiencing joy and gusto in the drawing process.
