Tips for finding an art school for you
Many students seem confused in the search for the perfect art school. (If there is such a place.) I have decided to give my best advice that may seem like a no brainier; however, students seem to miss these crucial steps in finding the right school and program.
1. Instructors - Do your research in finding out as much as possible about the instructors. Ask yourself:
A. Do they have a website/blog?
B. Does their personal or professional artwork inspire you?
C. Besides teaching, do they also work as a professional in the fine or entertainment industry?
2. Student Work - Does the school provide a gallery of student works you can see online? You can get an idea of the type of work that you will be doing at the school by seeing samples of students' classwork and projects. Does it motivate you?
3. Curriculum - Take a very hard look at a school's curriculum. Is the program sequential or do you pick and choose your classes? How many drawing classes are required? What type of studio art classes do you have? Are you learning anatomy, perspective, figure construction, etc... Do you want to be skilled a draftsman? What is your goal and does the curriculum back it up?
5. Atmosphere - There are students who want to go to college and get the full college experience of a big campus, lots of people, lots of activities, and just lots of... Then there are those who prefer a more intimate school setting with personalized attention and an intensive learning environment. There are schools in between, too! You need to think of the right environment for you. What appeals to you, a class with 25 students or a class with 10 students?
6. Visit the School - If possible, go and visit the school, see the classrooms and talk to the students and instructors. Then ask yourself if this is the place for you.
7. Cost - Compare financial packages. Just because you can defer your educational cost to the end, doesn't mean that was the right choice. You may find that having a $150,000 debt after graduation is not that appealing. Compare, compare, and compare some more...
8. Career - Let's face it, you can have a BFA or a MFA Degree; however, without a stellar portfolio your chances of being a practicing artist are not great. If your true passion is a lasting career in the art world, then do the research, and whatever school you choose, it will be up to you to do the work. As one of our students said to me, "You get out of it, what you put into it."
Most all artists will tell you that they are continually practicing and perfecting their craft, it doesn't end after art school.
For those interested in LAAFA's Programs here is our current flyer with an brief overview.

“I have a bachelor's degree in fine art but I felt that I still lacked the fundamentals to become a successful illustrator. It is also important to have people who work in the industry because you pick up from their work ethic. I wish more people knew about LAAFA.” – Maisie Y (Singapore) – Graduate working at Riot Games
“In my last university there were around 50 people just in my group. I was looking for something which was much more hands on where you get more face time with the instructors. LAAFA is ideally located in terms of networking and opportunities. I have seen a huge progression in my work.” – Ben S. (England) – Graduate working at Section Studios
"In a world where there is this growing trend for education to be a monotonous ride, LAAFA in my experience has been immense. A school that not many notice is a hidden gem of sorts. Starting from the world class instructors to the students and the closely knit environment that this school generates, I have learned so much in such a short period of time.” – V.J. K. (India) – Current Student at LAAFA
