Hello...Are you granting the Visas to your atelier students only or are the sessions student qualified for this? Like if I wanted to do a whole Semester and some classes on the side for 3 months.
And any plans of more youtube or better dvds along the way? Those were really helpful

    Thanks!

5-Day Painting with a Concept Workshop with Sherrie McGraw

5-Day Painting with a Concept Workshop 12/10-12/14/08 with Sherrie McGraw!

At first, learning to paint must include painting things well. Most painters feel they have succeeded in this quest when they can paint the subject convincingly. However, though painting images can be captivating, any thinking person might ask if there is something more than this technical proficiency. When an image compels you to return again and again to examine it, the underlying reason is the concept. Rather than seeing each object as a separate entity, concept establishes a relationship between objects, making something that is greater than the individual parts. This underlying visual message creates a beauty beyond subject matter and is the real reason behind the painting. Abstract visual ideas are less personal and more universal creating a more compelling and sublime painting. The only requirement for this class is a desire to learn.

Hey, everybody - my name is Marina, and I recently registered at LAAFA for next semester. I'm from Canada, and was planning on living with a relative in Santa Monica until I figured out that the commute by public transport could take hours, and transporting my car from here to LA would be.. questionable. So, I was wondering if anybody living close to the school might be looking for a roommate for two and a half months ,or if anybody has any other suggestions for this kind of situation, all ideas would be greatly appreciated! If need be, I can be contacted by email at fridman@ualberta.ca Thanks so much in advance, and I look forward to meeting everybody in January!

    Marina,

    Are you an A4 student? I'm A3.

In A3 I only know one student who takes the buses every morning, but I'm not sure where he's coming from. Everyone else commutes.

I can't imagine living in Van Nuys myself, but I'm not a city-boy at all. Though to be honest I've never seen any trouble and feel perfectly comfortable in the school. And I've never really explored the city.

Santa Monica is generally nice. Commuting on the 405 can be fast when you're going opposite the traffic, which I think would happen with late-morning classes (don't take my word on that, though).

Short answer: you can try getting in touch with other A4 students and arranging something, but you'll probably need that car.

    Hi Matthew,

A3? A4? I'll tell you if you explain what that means

    Thanks for your advice!

That's how LAAFA designates the Atelier classes, which move as a group through the Atelier program. If you're starting this January, you're probably part of A4.

Hey Marina, let me give you an early welcome to our school. Matt already answered your question I guess but oh well.

Laffa uses an Atelier numbering system. so A1 is the first group (starting it's 3rd year soon), A2 (our group) is 3 quarters behind them, and A3 is Matt's group which is one quarter in.

There's a bus stop right next to our school, I don't know where the buses that pass by stop or go to but its there.

Hey, Stephen, thanks so much for the early welcome! I actually am registered in several sessions as opposed to the atelier program. I decided to try to create a personalized program since I will only be able to attend the school for one semester.

Hi, Nick - I did receive your message, but thank you for making sure that it reached me! It is too bad that we won't be there at the same time - ah, well
I haven't heard great things about the public transport, either, and I think I'll just end up driving from here to LA so that I have my car and can stay with my relative.
Anyway, the best of luck to you, too, and I'll let you know if I figure out anything that might be useful!

    Marina
