    the lander sketchbook

I always liked to draw but I never do. I never liked to paint so I never did. Then I committed myself to take the "Monster Character Painting" class with Don Seegmiller. Mostly cos I wanted to learn how to paint. I still don't paint very well and I have everything to learn about everything.
This is my journey to become a better artist.

Some cool looking creatures. If they were finalised and tweaked a little more they would look amazing. You have a good imagination!

Cx: thanks. I'll work on that as I go. I'm way to unsure of what I'm doing to get into details.

did a little COW on the train going home from work. It's been about a month since I last worked in painter. Great thing is that after the class with Seegmiller I now feel relaxed when I work with the software. Before the class I had hardly used it at all. And painting with colors was out of the question. I'm not saying that I know what I'm doing, simply that I enjoy it

it's a WIP COW so this is mostly to keep this tread alive

hey mate, nice spidey painting, but try and toy around with a few mre pose possibilites and make it more dynamic, if u need practice life drawing or copying gymnasts from ref can assist with this, the more u get the essence of spideys character in the pose u do the more your kid with be totally psyched about it!
Why do u stick your nose in other families business'. Come on dude don't u have any HOBBIES?

Hello Lander, your sketchbook shows a great deal of potential. You have solid beginnings in every post, but that is my only crit, they are all beginnings. I understand that family, work, and life in general may limit the time you get to spend having fun drawing, but revisiting your paintings is the only way to put the polish to them. It's one thing to work fast and accurately, capturing the essence of a thing, this lends itself to minimalism, abstractions, stylized drawing, watercolor..etc. But I see in your work a level of rendering and attention to detail that cries out for more, and that kind of detail just doesn't happen in one sitting (for most of us). I hope you take this in a positive light, but in my opinion (whatever it's worth) many of these paintings you left off of just when things were starting to get interesting. Keep painting!

Blade-14: thanks and your'e absolutely right. I'll do more poses and tests before I make it for real. Life drawing havn't happend for a long time. Did it 15 years ago. Man I'm a slow start

P.J.Irwin: How could I take it the wrong way. Actually it boild down to insecurity and lack of confidence. I think that the only way I can get to the "interesting place" is by keeping this thread going. Hopefully I'll grow as I go and then I can go back and revisit these when I feel I have a grip of what I'm doing. Thanks again for visiting and the feedback.

Figured I'd work on my Z-brush skills. This was made from a simple very low poly base mesh. The topology of the basemesh isn't even close to where it developed. Fun but not very origional.

    sorry 'bout dis long post.

Frog-man at the fridge is an awsome idea!! I often daydream about how I would respond if I happened upon a Leprechaun or bugeyed alien grey. As much as I would want to enjoy an otherworldly experience, I'm forced to admit my first reaction would be terror, and if the world didn't end, If the thing that should not be didn't attack me, then I might calm down and become curious. I love the expression on it's face and the color scheme in general, but in my opinion the paper grain is too pronounced, perhaps a more subtle blended gradation between areas of solid color and areas broken up by the paper texture might help. Can't wait to see it further along. What program are you using to make these?--

Thanks JP. I use Painter for all my painting. Once I started to rotate my canvas in painter Photoshop felt like painting with a stack of bricks.
I don't know about you but I have alot of weird dreams where I encouter non wordly beeings. It's all fun and entertaining but If it would happen for real. I'd probably just go numb. I'll work more on him when this #100 COW thingie is over. Damn it does take alot of my attention these days.

Here goes some of my COW #100 at original size and yes they will pop if only I do some more work on them. Great lerning and I can assure you I have never ever painted this much in my entire life. But I guess my graze days of being a beginner is over. Now that I have done over 100 paintings I'll have to raise the bar and start producing higher quality stuff. The road is long but now I me feet is moving in the right direction.

Nice work. There's a ton of creativity in these designs. The nutcracker critter was particularly original.
I wish we could have posted them all at their original size for voting, just so that people could really appreciate the level of work that was done. But it was a great exercise and, like you say, I've got to kick it up a notch for next time.

Thanks for the encouraging words. Had I submitted the cow this size everyone would have seen how sloppy I am .

This COW forced me to change my ways so now I always have my moleskin in my pocket. Here are some stuff I did while waiting for the train and also from my girls guitar class. But no, until now I don't have a habit of drawing from real life.

I'm on the lookout for some good tutorials on tight rendering. Inspired by Romance, Jakkas and such. I'd like to pick up some tricks of the trade. Keep drawing and thanks for looking at what I do.
