From the new sketchbook. I totally guessed on the equipment.

"For the war against the Aithiopians Ptolemy recruited 500 cavalrymen from
Greece. To those who were to fight in the front ranks and to be the
vanguard - they were a hundred in number - he assigned the following form of
equipment. For he distributed to them and their horses garments of felt
(stolas piletas), which those of that country (hoi kata ten choran; "the
natives of the country" in Burstein) call kasas, that conceal the whole body
    except for the eyes."

edit: I was told D.Head probably has it wrong. It should be a dude from the army of Ptolemy V. around 187 BC.

hey Merlkir. great skechbook you have here. nice rendering on the soldier! maybe give the horse he's sitting on a little bit more form as well. so far it looks a bit too flat compared to the guy.
like you take on hellboy as well .

Found some time to do another TLD concept. Just an idea I had during lunch

I've done another cover for Ryan, this time it's a collection of short stories. Not sure about the name or when it's coming out. :/

Thank you, Merlkir, for visiting and commenting in my sketchbook. In the past two weeks I've slowly started drawing again after almost two years. But this time everything is digital from concept sketch onward. I'm still training my hands to use the wacom, it's a struggle for me. By the way, your battles scenes are great! You've shown quite an improvement since February.

Dude, you have some really badass character sketches. I love your armor designs... heck, I wish I had a library of your knowledge of armors. The helmet designs are crazy, and the battle ground scene is going to become one hell of a painting... keep it subdued and moody like it is now, just push the values further in certain places.

Thanks tons for the awesome comments on my master's project thread!

Wow.....finally I found a guy I feel pretty close artistically....we share so many themes....lord of the rings, historical reference for soldiers(I guess you read Osprey stuff??), romans...I am a very enthusiast of history and how weapons, armours, etc really were, so I like to find people who share this, like John Howe, hehe. Anyway, try not to overpaint, but copy. Copy old masters, and some animation to give fluency to your line and dinamism.....if you improve this...you can really become a stunning illustrator.
I liked very much the post #33.

Qetalivan: funny, I've been to your SB thread yesterday I think I don't do many overpaints really, I've done like...3 maybe. I do read Ospreys and I do indeed like John Howe's work a lot. ! that reminds me that I should take a look at his forums again and see what's going on there

We have quite nice leather/bronze helmets for the Dunlendings, but I've always wanted to draw their "tall helmets" (a quote I couldn't get out of my head, I've always wondered what they'd look like). Maybe for some chieftains they'd fit, sort of like signs of their status - ancient armor. (they use similar design with the metal stripes over a felt cap as some vendel helmets. And that's a wolf on the top! not a pig.)
And we have tons of elven helmets. My sketches, paintings, models...but I still think there is something to be improved or invented so..moar elven buggers.

What the title says, a corsair weapon called "eket". We sort of made it up. Well, not made up, we know the Númenorians used them, later the Gondorians and we wanted to have a nice short sword/side dagger for the corsair Black Númenorian nobles. I wanted to have it.
The concept for it was drawn by me:

    http://merlkir.deviantart.com/art/Co...lmets-92550605

it's obviously shorter, but we made it longer so it's effectively usable in the game. Model is made by Octoburn, texture by me. (the sheet is quite small, that's why it's a bit blurry.)

1: Just a quick liner sketch I did during the weekend. I haven't drawn anything in quite some time now.. O_o it shows I'll probably scrap this later.

2: Another concept from this weekend. I liked this one and I was bored as hell so I finished this one a bit more. Knights of Arnor are troops recruitable from Rivendell Elves. (they're Dunedain of course.)

Some 3D stuff. These are WIP test shots from my new animation that'll serve as an intro movie for TLD (The Last Days mod for Mount and Blade). Modeled and textured by me. (the stonework texture is from a 3D site though.)
