Jake, it's good to see you starting up a sketchbook!! about time. (I happen to sit right next to this guy at work. )

it's a good start, I have to say tho, it is a bit overwhelming at start! don't let that keep you and make sure you keep drawing/painting and updating!

look forward to seeing more! keep it going mate!

    cheers, Min

Heya Jake, its David from Marama. Sorry it took so long for me to catch up to ya, how's the animation biz?

That oil painting is definitely the best thing in this sketch thread...probably a reflection of the amount of time spent on it, as well as your effective use of color and brush technique.

The biggest thing holding back your work right now, from my perspective, is a tendency to soften and thicken all the component forms (muscles, bones, features, fingers, etc). Its really holding back your ability to develop interesting and compelling shapes. Even though you have a good grasp of anatomy and rhythm, you need to have more variety and energy in details and textures.

The other thing is that your values are too soft and vague. As a result everything has a flattened bas-relief tendency. You could really punch up the description of your forms with bolder, sharper, more naturalistic highlights and shadows (IE ones that imply a light source).

One specific critique on the second workshop painting: the model on the left has some issues with her chest...there should be a flat area between the collarbone and the beginning of the mammaries...this kind of looks like a 'boob necklace' or 'boob scarf'.

Don't be afraid to go nuts and push the envelope man! Puts some time into pieces with more texture, sharper details, bolder values, and more variety and energy in the rhythm of your forms (vary the size and density more).

sketchbook...a kitten dies every time you don't comment

“When forced to work within a strict framework,
the imagination is taxed to its utmost – and will
produce its richest ideas. Given total freedom,
the work is likely to sprawl.”

    - TS Eliot

Hay JAK, cool sketchbook going here bro.

I gotta agree with BludHund, that oil painting's awesome, same with the life drawings and I'm afraid I don't know enough about 3D to crit your stuff, but it all looks soild to me.

P.S. lol like the very random sketches at the top of the page as well.

Hey man, nice update. Hows work going?

Hmm now i look back alot of your noses look pretty large and wide, almost african. Perhaps a bit more variety in noses would be good.

Also here is something cool i saw on polycount in reference to 3d sketching. I dont think it will be that useful but its cool to look at for a technique. http://www.redprodukt.com/post/3dconcept.pdf
