At the moment I'm working on sketching and watercolours, but I'm also interested in getting into digital painting on a PC. But the problem is I use Linux at the moment...
As far as I know, Photoshop, Painter, and Autodesk Sketchbook are only released on the Mac and Windows. Does anyone know of any painting software comparable which works on Linux? I have GIMP of course, but as far as I know that can't be used for anything besides pretty basic paintings.
Also, if anyone has experience using Photoshop or Painter with WINE (a windows emulator) and a graphics tablet, I'd be interested to hear.
If it comes down to it and there's no other choice, I'll install windows to use Painter, but I'd rather have another option.
Thanks for any help
I am an Linux user too, I use Gimp on a Gentoo Linux system.
You can look my work here : http://yuk159.tuxfamily.org/ or http://yuk159.cgsociety.org/ (just for presentation)
On Wine you can use Artrage1 (the number two dosen't run).
Photoshop CS run but, but it's very difficult to make and not so usable.
I never succeeded, to load Painter on Wine.
And you can test this too : http://www.kanzelsberger.com/pixel/?page_id=12
No tablet support for the moment on this software, but that will come.
Sorry for my English, I hope to have helped you a little.

Thanks for the response, your English is fine by the way. I'd never seen paintings like yours done with the GIMP, nice work. I've just been reading the documentation, and it seems tablet support is not a problem in Ubuntu GNU/Linux, so hardware support shouldn't be a problem.Originally Posted by yuk159
I know everyone asks this kind of questions, but are there any particular textures/paintbrushes you find useful? Do you use the airbrush or just regular paintbrush? And custom textures, or just the default ones work ok?
Yes, no problem with the tablet support on Linux+Gimp, just for the last software (Pixel).
I use a Wacom Intuos and it work perfectly ^^.
No problem for the question, I work with the paintbrush (round, square, and custom animated brush), airbrush for certains things, and the ink tool.
I use the colors modifiers too (color balance, hue-saturation, curves etc...)
I work at this moment on tutorials for creat animated brush and other things on Gimp, but I have no time at the moment to finish it quickly .
