here are a couple more quick doodles. I am experimenting with using Photoshop layers to mimic a renderers lighting passes. It is not quite there yet, but I like some of my results.
one more painting test.
I recently bought a Samsung Slate 7. It lets me paint in Photoshop from life. Here are a couple examples.
here is an example of Gruff in action. The goat cards are always in play, so I gave them a different format than the ones you hold in your hand.A goat's stats change every round, the slider bars track that for me. I agree with the feedback of the font not feeling appropriate, and I need to format the cards such that the rules do not overlap with the art.
I went a little further on my king sketch, and started this new painting. They are both WIP. I would love some crit on it.
I put some more time into this painting. I am trying to do better about polishing my work.
Here are a couple more portrait doodles. I would really like to figure out how to make complete characters out of all these faces I have been making, in order to make a card game with them. It is something I will screw around with in the near future. Any suggestions would be super welcome.
Sorry I haven't made a reply post in a while, I am going to do that in the near future.
Hey man! Thanks for stopping by. I wish I can do pencil sketches as you..maybe someday Anyway to the pictures you posted yesterday, I think both can use some correction on contrast front. The values are kinda flat and that make your cool designs little bit uninteresting. But nothing what cannot be improved by curve tool in Photoshop or adding some darker tones (I am envious of your slate btw.). I made you quick comparission how much difference it makes. And sorry if I am telling you things you already know, just trying to be useful
My sketchbook - Please, help me grow Critique very appreciated
Thanks so much for the crit, I totally lost perspective on my values while monkeying around with the details. I will get that fixed tonite!
Whats the yellowy paper that you use? It has nice texture!
I put a couple more hours into my king sketch. I changed a couple elements of the drawing and pushed the values a little further.
concerning my paper,I am just using a regular moleskin. It yellows a little when I correct the levels in Photoshop.
Cojac thanks for the kind words. I will definitely keep drawing.
really interesting card game man! and you got sound drawing skill but i think you use too much front shots, play with more dynamic angles and start getting extreme i know you can push it anyways great stuff keep it up!
Good point lionheartGFX. I will try to push my gestures further. In the meantime here is an older doodle. I will post some more dynamic work tomorrow.
I like them sketches. Nice hatching.
About the paintings. Be mindful where you put your contrast. A general guide-line is to put the lowest and highest values where the focal points are. On some of your faces the eyes are pretty bright and get lost to some other seemingly insignificant detail that's put in a spot of higher contrast.
Your drawings on the other hand has the opposite going on. The focal points are clear and nice. Transfer this to your paintings. Paint as you would draw sort of.
Hello mate .
Since you are rendering these characters as 3d objects i think your improvements can be made in values and composition. The contrast that jakubvavrik added is important. Other than that you would need to limit it to the most important area. I would keep the high contrast in the main face area and i would darken out everything else. However i am not sure on what style you aim for. But even if stylized you would have to show more defined shapes. I did a paintover , rendering some more the portrait but it may be contrary to what you aimed for that certain artwork. I hope there might be something useful on it anyway
Almost always its a matter of values
[i worked it while in greyscale, for the base color i just duplicated your color rough and placed it on a color mode layer above the new greyscale]
Thanks for the paint-over Kostas. That looks great. I think I can do a version of that lighting that will work with my style. I will take a crack at that later today. in the meantime here are some gesture drawings from this morning.
Warning! Giant sketch dump ahead. So I went a year or so without posting, but I didn't go a year without drawing. Here is some of the stuff I doodled.
The last 2 drawings are from last night. Trying to incorporate Lionheart's critique to make things more lively.
Good stuff man. I really like you style
thanks Edum here are a couple random doodles.
I really like your pencil stuff; you’ve got a great style
Sophie and Crash, thanks for the kind words. I am definitely going to be putting some time into painting in the near future. For the moment here is another dump of archive sketchbook stuff.
