wow, very solid designs! only crit would be that the art-nouveau movement was not only about "from nature" since pretty much most of ornamental design comes from nature and leafs, like the akathus-leaf for example for the romans. or the papyrus-plant for the egyptians. that combined with the application of symmetry and/or other mathematical priciples. Examples are greek and arabic ornaments.

Now the tricky thing about art-nouveau is that in that period, for the first time, all those cultures have been known and analysed on their design-principles. Another big influence was the upcoming of eastern art, since japanese prints became largely popular by then and stuff.

Anyways, what I want to say is, that art-nouveau is not only about Mucha. A lot is extremely abstract, too. There's even a lot of expressionistic print- designs from that period.

Maybe I just don't find it swooshy enough For me Art-nouveau is more than anything about detail and swoooooshyness. A nice guide on symmetry for all kind of ornamentation is this actually: http://home.earthlink.net/~jdc24/symmetry.htm#examples

Anyway what do I know, haha! You rule man and the kid-vacuum isn't rediculous at all, it a genius idea! Making clean-up fun for the kids!

hey faust, i totally agree on the not swooshy enough thing about the vac cleaner, but i just hadnt enough time to perfect it. i think the graphic design could be better and more swooshy, i totally agree i first concentrated very much on the graphic design actually, but the teacher wanted me to focus more on form design then graph design.. you can see the first sketch ideas i had about the graphs for the vac cleaner in above post.

some relaxing after all day learning for exams...

i really need to do some handstudies

Man, you have got so good at pretty much every subject. You can sketch really cool props, vehicles, characters, environments...I mean, good work!
You are definitely an inspiration to keep doing more sketches digitally, since it's a tool that I like but I still struggle with.

Keep posting and thanks for sharing your ID stuff.

    Cheers!

It may feel like a crappy update to you but it's still pretty neat for anyone who's interested - like me. :]
I liked the this style when I saw the other one on page 16. Same goes for the guy getting hit by the stick. Great concepts too. Rock on.

a logo i designed for a weekmagazine for employees of the company of my brother (complicated i know)... its for a contest or something.. it has to express: sharing, bussines, fun, amateurism (it is done by the employees themselves and the layout sucks very much) the pixelish style, i chose to express the amateurism

Heey thanks for dropping by in my sketchbook.
I see you've been working hard, nice designs! Yeah another meeting would be cool, the zoo adventure is almost about a year ago right? But I live in Groningen now, so might be tricky to plan.

pfieuw these are hard, really good exercise though.
I assume you already checked scott robertson's dvd about this. Other then all the info on his dvd I would suggest to set up a few of these shapes in real life and do some still life studies. Nothing will teach you more then observing in real life. It should help alot to get those value relationships just right, and it should also answer your bounce light question.

Nice studies so far, keep it up!

Dude, those volume-studies are definately on the right track! I think the reason you're so good with tech is that you do so much perspective-studies, and you're basically arranging cubes all the time (And quite beautifully, too! Don't get me wrong ) but if it comes to rendering or applying a more sophisticated form-language, you still lack the sense of 3-dimensionality on a pure instinctive level. So The studies you do right now are ace and just the right thing!

Now for some pointers (As far as I can give them), here you do them quite good, actually: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...9&d=1235405555

I agree with Epias, get yourself some basic forms, ball, cube, cone and cylinder, then try to understand what's going on. Made a little quick rendering for you: WATCHHHHHH

Anyways, I wanted to show you some stuff I learned about form-language and design since you asked me a related question earlier and the comment of your teacher about the vacuum-design struck me as odd. Didn't find the time yet, though

I'd love to have a little meeting, though. Friesland is indeed not far away, maybe we can arrange something

epias: hey man, thanks for the post, i checked the dvd;s after reading yur post, it really cleared up a lot of things take care dude, im wondering how you leveled lately?

faust: dude, thats an awesome post. and i see the time you posted it, it was 3 o'clock nighttime.. damn dude! about what you say about me not having the sense for 3dform rendering on a sophisticated level, thats sooo true and thats the reason im doing these boring studies.. the drawing you made for me is awesome, thanks, i still struggle with the bounce lights but it really helps to plot things in section view i just found out.. because when you draw sections (doorsneden), the angle of the light can be read very easily... neat little trick

    Wow man, great studies!!
The shadows are really getting good. A simple way to check your imagination to reality is to find some smooth objects to draw (maybe a coffee cup or blender or something).. You can draw it from mind and then from life to check what you might have missed and what you have down..

One thing that really really caught my eye on this page was This!.. I absolutely LOVE this image. Creat balance between detailed and simplified, contrast and subtle..! I stared at it for like a couple of minutes.. Think it's really lovely, the hair and face especially.. You might want to work on that a liiittle bit more? for me haha!? Lol.

Oh I'm totally in for a meeting as well, when you Dutchies have an idea about where & when I'll totally be there, so be sure to post it in the Sketchmeets thread

Oh and for a little crit: I think something you might want to watch is gradients, softness and transparency in your technical shading. It might pay off to create basic shading first so that the form really reads as well as possible, and then maybe add some transparancy or just whatever the image is asking for.. Though I know pretty much nothing about this branch of drawing so if you learned or heard differently feel free to ignore me

    Keep up the great work!
    Marleen.

    Love
    Marleen.

The designs and studies are very interesting. I think you are on the right track to master values. Its also nice to see the more techincal stuff that is a great part of art and life though. My keyboard was designed by someone like you! =)
Teh face study in post #501 is absolutely eye catching. The expression is really compelling. Really great work on that one. Care to finish it?

No:thanks and thanks for the advice marleen That piece is done from photoref, a real nice photo! i like to check out sites of really pro photographers and they have such beautifull images to look at, it will inspire you to draw from it.. i think its not a bad idea to refine that one :p but at the moment im pretty busy with school stuff about the sketchmeet, when there will be a meeting, i'll let you know. your crit is very true.. thats actually exactly the thing i have been studying lately.

Janos: thanks, yeah, ID is a very good education for me they dont concentrate on art that much though... but design is what i find interesting. that face study is actually me and i really dont have the resemblance down haha.. hmm, i dont think ill finish that one, i think i will do new different studies..
