    Great Golden Guddle Greaper
    Rizzard fizzers boggles and sleepers,
There's no creatures as elusive as the Great Golden Greapers.
Past beaches of sneaches vallies of heefers,
over the mountains of Fafus and the lakes of Bambeekers,
you find a mammal with long-necked, yellow-brown features.
What you will discover is far less than elegant,
the beast is far clumsier, perhaps twice that of an elephant.
With a throat six feet long, it's reach is not scant
but plenty high to get stuck in the tall Kuah plant.

This is the Golden Guddle Greaper. Usually found anywhere that you can find large quantities of worked gold. A dragons cave, chests of gold, etc., depending on the age and size of the creature. This creature has an unusual adaptation for camaflouge. It's beak has evolved to into a golden appearing plate which changes in shape as the Guddle Greaper matures. When still young (as seen below), the beak resembles a gold coin. As it grows, the beak continues to change in shape to resemble a plate and then as large as an ornate shield. Covering itself in the surrounding gold, the Golden Guddle Greaper lies in wait for it's prey. Ambushing the unsuspecting victim, it is then swallowed whole. Like humans fingerprints, the designs on all Guddle Greapers are unique and can vary quite dramatically, often resembling the writing on surrounding pieces in order to further keep the creature hidden.

    TriG
Guddle Greaper... if you see this words, you must know. This is dwarvish blabbering. In fact - it is. Greaper is the name of medium-sized beast, that consumes earth with all those rock'n'mud, and than - with the help of fourteen powerfull stomaches - this walking ironworks "guddle" (make a poo-poo) with molten ore. Of course, those little bastards... ekhem, I mean - Dwarves - want to use those fellas as a free walking selfworking ironwork. But, those greedy dwarves, tame'n'train TriGs to sniffle only gold or silver... That's why Guddle Greaper have also a Golden name. You know, dwarvish language is really... silly. Because of three G in he creature name, they call it TriG... Guddle for poo, Golden for gold and Greaper, from the name of first dwarf, that tame the TriG. Yeap.

The normal Green Greaper is a common feature of northern arboreal forests, carnivourous, its mode of hunting is to leap down on its prey grabing it in mid-air and then expanding rear legs and tail to act as floatation as it this mode of attach is know in the scientific community as "Greaping" for its combination of grasping and leaping. The Golden Guddled Greaper is much rarer as its bright coat makes it easily visible to predators and prey. There are a few isolated communities of the Golded Greaper, they are locally common in the yellow forests of Lothien.

This species of Greapers live in shallow waters in springs and near mountains.
They live at the bottom of the water and feeding in the algea that grows on stones and pebbles.
This particular Greaper gets it's name by the outer shell on their back shimmer of gold when under water. The Golden Guddle Greaper sometimes eats small pieces of gold while feeding on the algea to help out their disgesting process.
The small pieces of gold tumbles around in the stomach and helps out to devide the algea (the gold acts as a tennis ball in the washing machine.) Small pieces of gold sticks to the body and when the Greaper is spawning, gold is fused into the outershell. This behaviour creates the golden looks of the outer shell.
The Golden Guddle Greaper is the cause of many broken dreams as they look very similar to small golden nuggets.

In our never ending quest to explore the depths of ocean, we once again stumble upon a new species of invertibrate rightfully called the Golden Guddle Greaper, or Golden Greaper. Characterized as the missing link between Jellyfish and Vertebrates, the Golden Greaper roams the open ocean in constant search of its prey(T. Edison Plankton). The bioluminesance of the plankton causes the blood and guts of the Greaper to emit a golden glow. Like the Blue whale, the Greaper has a sort of primitive baileen to strain its food from the water around it. The balls hanging from its belly are its young.

The Golden Greaper or the Lead Mine, Alchemist Beetle
This creature - the "Golden Greaper" lives in the Guddle lead mines. Its natural source for food is the lead found in the rock ore. It collects its rocks by....well, GREAPING them! Like a reaper you could say, but as this is the Guddle lead mines, those clever locals decided to come up with the witty title of a greaper! G->REAPER!!! ........yes? ANYHOW it is obtained in the rocks, using an array of tough digging teeth that lie down its spine. It then eats the rock ore containing the lead - and no it doesnt die. Instead by incredible chance, its digestive system holds the key that alchemists have been looking for, for years! As the lead passes through the digestive system, it is turned into gold, which actually grows to form its outer shell! An alchemists dream in the form of a Golden Greaper from the Guddle lead mines.

    concept:

The guddle greapers are only restricted to the Treesan Islands. The natives of the island coined the name "guddle greaper" to describe the mating behavior of these creatures. The work "guddle" means small objects, and "greap" means to seek or collect. Like the name indicates, male guddle greapers like look for objects that match the eye color of the females to attract them. However, if the color of the item does not match the females' eye color close enough, or a completely wrong color, the females may get irritated and attack the male. So for some unlucky males, breeding season could bring an end to their lives.
Golden guddle greapers are the rarest among all the guddle greaper species. Like other greapers, they have a hard outer shell and a tentacle situated between the eyes. They usually collect the golden leaves of Treesan bush, but since humans have inavaded the neighboring islands, these little creatures can sometimes find artifacts washed off beach, such as this gold-colored bracelet:

    concept:

The golden guddle greaper's natural habitat is the dense brush found in forests surrounding lakes and swamps. The greaper's diet constitutes mainly airborn insects, and it has evolved an ingenious method of capturing its prey. The greaper has no eyes, stands around 6 feet tall, and moves slowly and laboriously through its dense territory. Two sets of tentacles on each side of its body feel their way through the forest, making up for the lack of eyes. The greaper has one large mouth at the front of its body which it uses to gather in large amounts of air into one of its 6 lungs.
Air is then independantly released into oversized nasal cavities which are coated in a naturally occuring mucus, this action produces the distinctive 'Guddle guddle guddle greeeeaaap' sound of the greaper. As the air reaches the ends of the cavities, the mucus is formed into a bubble, and blown into the air. The greapers tentacles are adept at controlling the bubbles as they float around, and push them too and fro covering as large an area as possible above the greaper. As insects fly through the night air and come into contact with the bubbles, the very adhesive properties of the mucus coat the bubble in a writhing mass of winged creepy crawlies. Once the weight of the insects begins to pull the bubble down, the bubble is popped by the greapers tentacle, and all foodstuffs transported directly to the mouth. As the bubble burst, large amounts of spray are produced, coating the greaper in its viscous mucus, which shimmers golden in the moonlight.

The 'Common Blind Golden Guddle Greaper' is a wild digging beast, living in small groups along side the shores of Maratanga, under ground and out of reach. As an omnivore the Guddle will eat about anything it can fit in it`s mouth, yet this elfin but fierce creature has acquired a specific affectionate taste to the famous ShishKulal mushroom, found generously attached to tree roots, heavy boulders and underground burrows. The blind Golden Guddle Greaper was named by its discoverer, the zoologist and explorer Professor Martin Holander, who after studying the animal`s behavior and habits in its natural habitat, noted that the Guddle - after finding a ShishKulal fungi artery- Engage in a strange and awe inspiring brutal greaping of the mushrooms, resulting in a mash of fungi which it then consumes and nurture upon. In this act of gorging, the Guddle gets covered almost utterly by This mushroom`s seeds which contains a rare fluorescent fluid matter called "gilden acerbic", that appear to shimmer, at the darkness of the Maratanga underground dens, in a bright golden color.
This symbiosis, between beast and beauty, results in the spreading of this "golden" mushroom across the continent, and the ever growing numbers of this "golden" wild beast.

Golgafrinchen is a High density world with a surface gravity 50 times that of Earth. Yet even here, intelligent life has risen. The Guddles are perhaps the strongest and hardiest race in the galaxy, evolved to withstand the incredible hardships of their homeworld. Guddles are marvels of adaptation. They have carapaces capable of shielding them from small meteors and breath through their suction mouth feet which can grip the ground and hold them in place during the violent rock hurling storms of Golgafrinchen. Guddles are all born female, but once every generation they gather on the highest ground and begin a ritual known as greaping. Weighing fully 20 tons in their high gravity, the Guddles begin lifting their front segments off the ground. Only the very strongest and lightest of the Guddles are capable of a full greap, lifting their first 3 segments completely vertical. Those few who succeed will go through a metabolic change induced by the physiological strain of the full greap and become male. This transformation is accompanied by a pigment change from the normal dull purple and brassy coloration to a brilliant golden hue. The Golden Guddle Greaper now needs all his strength to father the next generation of Guddles. Because he is also the lightest in weight of the Guddles he won't crush the females in the process.

The Golden Guddle Greaper, otherwise known as the Hull Tick to many deep space salvagers. The Greaper will attach itself to practically any object that emits heat or energy. The secretions ejected out of the pores of the Greaper will bind it to it's intended victim. Unfortunately to the victim, the secretion is incredibly corrosive. More ships and lives have been lost to these dangerous parasites.

The Golden Guddle Greaper is a stunningly beautiful creature. It got it's name from it's golden wool and it's feeding habit. Some believes that this is due to it's strict goldfish only diet that resulted in it growing golden wool. The Golden Guddle Greaper is also a natural born fisher man. it makes use of it's tip of it's tail to lure goldfishes to shore, and scopes them up with it's claws.

    concept:

    Height .5 meters
    Weight 2.5 kilograms
    Life Expectancy: 15 years
Due to its lack of eyes the Golden Guddle Greaper can usually be found in damp dark areas such as swamps and sea level caves. It's slug like gold body is soft and has the consistancy of smooth leather. Despite it's lack of armor and slow movements the Greaper does have a very effective defense mechanism...located at the top of its predominant guddle, there is a small opening. Inside its guddle the greaper produces a noxious gas that when ejected paralyzes its prey or attackers. When settled, the gas takes on the like appearance of gold dust, thus many miners have met their demise exploring caves lined with what they believe is gold but find out all too late that it was the Greaper's corrosive fumes. The gas is inhaled through the lungs and attacks the nervous system and relaxes the muscles throughout the body. With it's prey alive and subdued the greapers will conjugate around the fallen victim to slowly greap and gnaw its victims to death while the victim can only watch as he is slowly devoured by their black mandibles.
Which is why many miners have coined the phrase "Dig up gold, rich till old...breath in gold, soul is sold."
Mating Habits:Greapers are A sexual and will reproduce when they reach maturity (about 5 years) and food is plentiful. Greaper young form on their bodys as guddle extensions and eventually drop off and form independant greapers.
Unknown Spreading: Scientists have yet to understand how greapers colonize once vacant mine shafts and caves. It is believed that their gas also contains spores that under the right conditions, spread into the wind and settle in damp areas maturing into small greapers.
Scientific Uses: In small doese the greaper's gases are used for medical purposes as an anesthetic for surgery. Once the gases settle into their gold dust form, the dust can be absorbed into the skin and aid in relaxing muscles in massage therapy. (Golden Guddle Goo)
Senses: Lack of eyesight, no sense of smell, communicate through slime trails left in their wake.

    concept:

Earth has reached a new boiling point in which it's climate has achieved an all time record high heat wave. This change in our climate has killed off many of our ancestral mammal species but a few varying species of arthropods, reptiles and birds have unexplainably adapted to the new and deadly temperatures. One such species are the Golden Guddle Greaper, a subspecies of the now known arthreptica family. They have cross bred between each of the 3 families creating a family of animals capable of adapting to practically any situation. Their many forearms are used to burrow quickly and deeply into the ground where they create nest like spiders or lairs in which they keep them self cool when needed. Their name derives from their Golden appearance and their gold plated feathers which are quite tough like scales. These scaled feathers are used to reflect the light and bounce it off of their bodies when they are out foraging for food. However they also use their wings to absorb a needed percentage of the suns exposure stored for night fall when sleeping in their dens. Though their wings are rather small in comparison to their body weight they are used more for protection and absorption of the sun than flying, however they are capable of a slow decent from high altitudes in which they glide to lower ground.
Scientist and the human species closely study these arthreptica to learn of new ways they can survive our dying planet, learning from nature how to adapt and evolve in order to welcome this change instead of fear it. The Golden Guddle Greaper still possesses many traits of their ancestors and various recognizable features. The bright red bubbles of skin and fatty tissue on top of the forehead is utilized by males to attract a mate. The males display this red skin while flashing the bright golden backside of their feathers in the sun like morse code, letting the females know of their position. The skull markings on the underside of the wings are used for intimidation though with their size it's hardly necessary, this trait has been passed down from moth's over the generations.

The Golden Guddle Greaper is an illusive airborne critter. It is rather muscular for it's less than formidable size, never growing more than half a meter in length. It features an ornate decorative pattern down it's center, created by mineral deposits under the skin. Each creature features a unique pattern, as well. The golden appearance of these markings has made their skins prized possessions among hunters, so their numbers are far less than long ago. It is considered good luck to place a greaper skin under the mattress when a young couple is trying to conceive.

I've watched every sci-fi movie you could name, but nothing prepared me for a real life encounter with these aliens. They smelled like a cross between strawberries and the toner cartridge from a xerox machine. Their voices, which they deployed from a misshapen orifice in their right sides, sounded like a hybrid fart-cough. They spoke in an over-excited but acceptable English, given its alien nature: "We represent Golden Guddle Greapers! We come for peace!" People found their grammar rather endearing, and about six months after they got to Earth, they were doing ads for United Colors of Benneton and The Gap. I thought that was weird, because they certainly couldn't wear clothes.

The Golden Guddle Greaper is sometimes considered a beautiful if unlikely living ornament to some garden homes. Its preferred diet of Guddle grubs make it a welcome visitor to every neighborhood where the grub is considered a bothersome pest particular due to its nasty habit of eating the roots and bulbs of the flowers of many perennial blooming favorites. The Golden Guddel Greaper's thick fur coat easily sheds the oils and sap that drip from the trees that is this six-legged creature's home. The longer middle pair of arms provide the GGG a quick set of grasping tools to grab its prey, whether grub or tree fruit. In addition to the golden fur, the GGG also has a nice set of semi-transparent quills to help protect it from the occasional predator.

The Goldern Guddle Greaper seems to be a wierd cross between a slug and a mole and is about the size of a galleon. Its thick golden hide and immense size make it the top of the food chain in the sea and it has little competition from other predators (whom it tends to eat). Its favorite delicacy is seagull, which it finds incredibly difficult to catch. Most of these sea-creatures are spotted when they beach themselves attempting to get a bite of their favorite meal.
The first of these grotesquely majestic monsters is said to have been a result of the experiments of one over-achieving mad wizard, whose life came to an abrupt end after his Golden Guddle Greaper swallowed him whole. It is said that he created this beast as a result of jealousy stemming from his colleagues' successes with crossing owls with bears, lions with eagles and cave trolls with even nastier cave trolls.

The plant character bothers me...my finger - - - is on the button...looks somehow finished unlovingly and sloppy...my finger - - - is on the button...i will see what you are coming up with next time...my finger - - - pressed th e button...EEEEEEEEP!

It hurts saying this to young people each time...but still COW demands a certain skill level...it's not me, it's this stupid f**** COW....it's stronger than all life on earth

hombre, your creature looks so humanoid to me, even if i have hard times to tell what's going on in the head/face region...it has also some kind of armor or clothing, which touches the character rule in very sensitive areas
And it was brave to use b/w for a topic which demands a color for the creature anyway...

I am comparing your work from now on with your Blue Mountain Glider. You know it was your best work and 1 class higher than your current entry. So be prepared to get your ass ripped, when you won't beat that level next time

We are all going to die one time i know...but still you could invest more time to your entry...you will die anyway...next time at least your entry will, when you don't love your art

    My voting... is DONE!
As I promise, I vote for TomCaridin work. Those cute "Hard Wormie Thingie" are so cute. The best idea for a creature for me since the invention of the spoon. Ultracool pic. But, there are also my other favourites: Ikuru, Hurricane, Chuck,Mate - they works are also so ultramegacool. I wish to draw like this

Fozzy! You LIE! This work is better... I think... So...

There were so many amazinng entries...

    Hurricane: Great mixture of textures...

Tom Garden: I love the tonal quality of the whole thing...

Chuck, Mate: This has such a sculptural quality. It's amazing how alive it feels...You should check out SmellyBug's stuff out over in thte sculpture section...

Mike Corriero: What else can I say...Pro. I strive to achieve this level of detail and presentation. I enjoy the fine line between cartoon and realistic rendering and you walk it easily...

As for me? I'm nobody special. I hadn't picked up a sketch pad in a couple of years and finally decided to buy a Wacom tablet in Dec. Now I'm just trying to find my own style and advance my abilities. Any and all tutorial and critique info is welcome and appreciated. Thanks for letting me play in your sandbox.

Corriero has my vote, it's presented with lots of detail and makes a distinct impression, I have a thing for creature concepts that have just the creature, no fancy background, just the creature and white....makes you focus on what the whole thing is about a bit more

Close Ties were chuck mate, Tom C, and Tom Garden.....

Hey I'm a Tom too.... I gotta support my fellow Toms! Great work from the Toms!!yay!!

Damn, I didn't see that part about not voting for yourself until it was too late. Pardon the self-pity. Fozzy, if I could please change my vote to Corriero's entry. All kindsa bad-assness, from the line work to the rendering to all those little details...outstanding!

    Thank you Saise!

Wow what a tough field. Absolutely no questioning the quality of workmanship coming from so many people. I am glad to be part of this.

I voted for Scorge, he created a beautiful golden creature with great skill, (as did so many others) but it also made sense to me. It isn't an evolutionary dead end nor simply a vast engine of destruction...he made a creature that made sense with his presentation.

Maybe I need to learn more of the qualities the COW's are based on. When I look at the winners of past COW's I can see how visually stunning a winner needs to be. Also to me they really seem to nail the topic dead on. With this random name topic we had to create meaning to the name with our creature. How do you nail the topic when its nonsense? Well I think a few people still figured out how!

    Brilliant work from everyone!

    Whooaa! So many beautyfull greapers!
I wish I could have participated in this round. I already had a good idea but didn't have the time to paint it

FlyingMilton - this is so weird, reminds me of alice in wonderland
    VirtualSurreality - X-Com?
chaosrocks - a really mean squirrel
scorge - I like your GGG, look like a real animal but I asked myself how does he swim with such a small fin?
    Tom Garden - excellent!
longshao - this is so cute, I love it!
    Peg - Alien?
TomCardin - and again yours is one of my favourites, and you wrote an interesting background story
Oenrix - stunningly beautiful? Doesn't look beautiful with that warty nose, you should have given it a more smooth nose. Sorry. My opinion.
MikeCorrero - damnit, that's not fair. I am gonna eat my Wacom!
BEESFIS - Nice. I like the ornamental look. But it is to heavy to fly.
    ikuru - very dynamic. Great!

I voted for Hurricane. I liked the eggs and the shock of red-orange on the side. There's almost something of a bio-techno spaceship feel to it, which I love.

Also fond of Tom Garden's, MikeC's for sure, scorge and the hauntingly beautiful simplicity of Nisse-Bule's... oh... and Chuck,Mate... you have more amazing textures than I have hairs on my head. And I havent lost any of it yet.

    Great round, folks!

Voted for Hurricane, for me the final pick was between Mike C and Hurricane, but all in all LOADS of good ones. a real treat for the eyesesss!

Ernie82- aye, I always seem to go there
by the time I realize its usually too late to salvage and it ends up a cheap alien rip. Not next time though!

Hey, I voted TomCardin since I fell in love with that creature. It simply looks so good and is well rendered too, allso the other dudes in the bg are nice. specially the one to the left. Great work man!

Things that could have been better is the render/collor of the sky, allso the compostition is a bit off I think, I get the feeling the main creature is to far on the right side of the pic right now.

Nice round this was, big thanx to Redehlert for your help and generous feedback, and to Saise, Ernie82 for kind words.

    Props to (my fav list):
Flying Milton, for a funnylooking concept with lovley collor, nice render and good sense of light.

Peg, for a verry cool creature with a verry nice render (love the mouth and teeth), the shadow could have been better, and it would have been moodyer with some hint of a bg.

longshao, It´s cute, and funny and verry well done, like someone said, the gold could look more like gold and maybe reflect more of the picture too (even though that is dead hard to achive Im sure) . Like the vibe allot.

Saise, verry funny look, and verry silly, I remmeber him from the garden in the "hellish beast" though. thats the same dude aint it?

Tom Garden, verry cool render, and creature, and from what I remmeber the best Ive seen from you (did you do a blue thing with a green bg for the hellish beast maybe? that one was kick ass killer btw). Normally Im too lazy to read all the concept text people glue on their monsters, but I like the obvious twist to involve alchemy! Nice inventive touch.

hurricane, verry cool, it draws my imagination to goa trance, and Alien (the movie).

redehlert, symetric simple, nice collor and funny but with a scary face. Allthough I must say I saved your first creature in my inspereation folder, it was verry strong somehow, dynamic and inspiering.

Mike C, you blew us all out of the pond dude!
Cool creature too, keep comming back dude! We will allways need pro's (who keep this thread on the highest levels) to beat around here!

Creatures inspiered by HR Giger's ALIEN (against our will) list:

My Creature (I did my best not to go there, but really its a stiff horse giraf with a alien head.
Nisse-bula (looks like the things that jump on to their faces there)
hurricane thoes egglike gold things and the slime is all verry alinenisque.
    and the winner is: (drumroll)
Peg (lack of eyes and pose of mouth maybe make it look like one of thoes nice space dude beeings in alien)

    Thats all for now...
    Ps.

Nice too see you laborating chaos.

Oenrix, your creature looks a bit sad, it expresses allot of emotion and therfore captures the eye and I like that sort of thing allot.
But the whole render/light and shadow etc. could need more expirience. go studdy something like Redehlerts sketchbook for instant wisdom, keep them comming!
    See you all soon.

My vote goes towards Hurri's concept, although it was an extremely hard choice because many of these were fantastic! I believe that hurri's captured the true essence of what a "GgG" would look and act like. There were so many other great entries as well, i wish i could have participated

and thanks MC! that tut really helped open my eyes a bit to other paths in PS lol. Keep being sexy pimps!

Thanks all for a truely inspiring first blood experience of COW... over the moon that I made the shortlist!

Thanks also for the time and patience taken by those offering up crits, it's a very encouraging feeling to have work remarked on, and only serves to stoke the engine that much more.

I haven't been able to take my eyes off Hurricanes piece for the better part of the week so my vote goes to him in thanks for so much eye loving.

So many really fantastic pieces all in all.

    Cheers

    Thanks for your vote, santon.
hurricane--The thing I like the most about yours is that the concept is very clear. The thing is greaping out golden guddles. Nice rendering, too.
scorge--very unique design. The creature is perfect, you could bring more depth to the background.
    Tom Garden--awesome looking creature!
Jotalele--very unique creature. For some reason it looks under water before I read the description.
Peg--I like the creature. Some kinda background and a little more texture could make it really stand out.
Chuck,mate.--Wow, great rendering and texture! The splashing out gold is a neat touch.
TomCardin--You are my runner up. Good concept and rendering, and color distinction. I especially like the texture of the creature.
wizo5454--It looks like a really promising sketch, I wish you had refined it.
MikeCorriero--I voted for you. Need I say more? It's insane-looking, I wanna see it in action.
BEESFIS--Nice-looking creature; however, it looks more like a fire spirit of some sort.
Michael Jaecks--Your creatures are always so distinctive. It's so grotesque and bizarre.
ikuru--I like the action and texture, I wish to see a little more anatomical structure of the animal.

TomC.: Back at ya bud. Great description, great rendering(seems a little dark though, could be my monitor), and for over all improvement, you take my vote. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next time.

    Runners up:
Tom G, Jaecks, and Red. As usual, great concepts and execution.

Mike C., Hurri, Chuck and Jakkas (wherever he may be) You guys are all way too dangerous for this kind of stuff. I'll keep doing my best to beat you. Wish me luck!

Everyone else, this was a big round seems like. A lot of great entries, some good ones, and some.....uh... what the hell were you thinking? I'll be practicing right along with you. Keep up the good work!

P.S. Longshao, great job on COW 73. These little elephant guddle greapers are so dang cute. Hilarious!
