The female ninja is cool, were you going for a manga style? Your painting is good as well you just need to work on lighting a bit more. Keep it up!

Cold Revolver Thanks a lot for the comment! Yeah, it was manga style. Manga was my original draw to digital art, but I'm starting to move away from it, getting into more realism and whatnot.
I appreciate the critique too, any particular advice on what to work on with the lighting?

Sure, it takes time and patience. Decide on a light source and place it somewhere and draw from that light source. Your character should reflect light as well, if the light color is blue than the reflective light will be blue as well while the shadows are darker in value.

Example: If you place a regular light bulb high on top of your character the contours of the face as well as the upper body will be lit up, and the lower contours of the body will be in shadow. I hope this helps.

    020707 update!

This time it was pencils and markers.

1.)Talim from Soul Calibur II...except I forgot her sleeves, which are the best part of her costume.
    2.)doodle.
    3.)doodle.
4.)Just a kinda spiderman doodle...I've realized it's not really spiderman if you don't put him flying through the air in a ridiculous pose...oh well, it was fun.

w00t. I'm on somewhat of a roll here. Sooo these are excerpts from my sketchbook today.
1.) A study of a real person's face. Not just something I made up. A rare occurance because people don't usually sit in the same spot that long...the head's always on the swivel.
2.) I did make this one up...kind of. But I liked using the side of the pencil to generate the tone like that, I've got more tooth in this sketchbook so it's fun.
3.) A good ol' front and back character study...this is something I'd like to refine and maybe use markers on, so I may do that and post it later. Original character of course. Just throwing stuff around and seeing if it looks good.

    Until next time.

    These are Denny's sketchings.
    1. A queen chess piece...nothing fancy going on here...I didn't have a reference so I was just kinda goofing around...I cut off the word "CHESS" as you can see. No particular reason for that. Just crappy scanning.
    2. My friend Molly. Not as accurate as I'd like, but...pretty close. Her eyes are mostly right. I should do more self portraits, so I can really show progression, as well as how I see myself. Yup. Might have some more tomorrow.

Nice sketches! I really like the life-observed head/face and the sketches of Talim. You do your mouths very well, which is something I always have trouble with so I envy you Keep it up!

Hey guys, back with the next installment. Here are some pencil sketches from ye olde sketchbook.

Cold Revolver Mmm...that seems to be a problem I always have, I don't go dark enough, or I don't go light enough. I'll keep that in mind for next time!
paperx Oh definitely some good ideas, I appreciate it. I'll try to keep you guys' suggestions in mind next time I'm painting away...thanks.

Thanks for everybody that keeps commenting, it means a lot.

nice updates!!! i like ur doodle sketches alot (i still cant believe u called my crappy pencils stunning ) anyhoo... like i said...they're great
just one little thing i'd like to point out, on ur newest side view face marker doodle watch out for the length of the jawline..if u remove the hair u'd be able to see that the distance between the back of his neck and the end of his jaw is a bit too narrow...but no biggie really, just wanted to give u some helpful comments rather the usual "OMGSOAWESOME"

ps: i think the end of the jaw line marks the half way point between the side view of the face, keep that as reference i guess
PPS: forgot to mention this...the photoshop piece is awesome! what brush do u use? just default? cuz it has this really nice corel painter look to it

PaperX Hey, no I hugely appreciate the critique, and I'd like more like em. Yeah, the painting was with some tweaked default brushes. I set the opacity and flow both to pen pressure in the PS brush settings and then just got the right colors...the colors kinda worked here I think. I'm proud of it in that respect. Still got a long ways to go, though.
    Thanks for commenting again!

I clipped up this page a little bit and stuff, but just a full scan from my sketchbook. Sorry I've been light on posting. I'm going to punish myself now.

    022607

Just another update for today. No pencil sketches, but my sketchbook's got some pages filled so I'll scan those a different day.
Today I decided to paint a picture in OpenCanvas. So I tried a technique I've seen a lot here on the forums, do a small scale composition sketch in only black and white. Then I put a layer beneath that and laid down some tone, giving it some color and a basic background, merged the layers, and then built color, shading and everything else on top of that.
I got this finished in around 2 hours...a little rough in some spots, but I kind of wanted to leave it that way.

It's supposed to be underwater...don't know how well I captured that...but I thought a murky green would be a nifty color for the piece.

I'd really appreciate any critiques or advice you guys have on doing this kind of thing in the future. Or with painting in general.

PaperX Thanks again for the kind words. I guess I'll have to start drawing stuff I suck at so that you have something to critique, then, huh?

hey man that looks really nice...i think maybe add a few different colours on the diver to capture attention? as for underwater...maybe add a few water plants on the lower right corner, and some bubbles? underwater is a subject that i personally never tackled before so i cant help you much on that sorry

anyways...seeing as u did that in oC im totally prepared to just humiliate myself now when we have our oC session in the future try not to improve tooooooooo much b4 the time comes

PS: i installed AIM yesterday, i think i added u...but im not really sure

    update.

I was feeling inspired today and I realized I don't have any figure/anatomy studies in this sketchbook. So I broke out the Bridgman. Just figures for now, but you better believe I'll be doing arms, legs, and especially hands soon.

    1. A page of sketches I completed at orchestra yesterday, two different cellist players...neat instruments...
    2. Bridgman studies
    3. Bridgman studies
    4. Bridgman studies

Bridgman was a nice break from the norm...

paperX Mmm...yeah, I probably could've used a bit more variety on the suit. Thanks for the good suggestions man.
Hahaha, I look forward to those OC's, I just hope you don't surpass me before then. Keep working, man.
