Loving the latest creature design! I like the texture you have too, detailed and still painterly enough to not detract from the whole piece.
And Yoitisi, thanks for the paintover! I think I am getting carried away with drawing cool creatures and forgetting functionality, so that paintover of yours definitely gave me a lot to think about!

Davi kicks ass. Good work on the model sheet. The only thing I would like to see more of, is over lapping forms. I think this could help bring across that 3d feel a little more.

I put in some more research, hope you don't mind

First of all, let me get back to the whole front leg issue. In your last version, the shoulder looked better but the shoulder blade still looked a bit off, as did the lower leg part. I attached two pieces of ref that correspond to paint-over a and b.

a: Notice how the shoulder blade points backwards more than in the rhinoceros reference image. The upper leg bone corresponds to this by pointing backwards in an equal amount, forming a sort of zigzag, which results in a balanced stance. Also, the shoulder is located somewhat lower on the rhinoceros and your version, resulting in a more broader chest. Since your animal has a bigger tail than the rhinoceros, it makes sense to let the hip start higher up like the triceratops.

b: In the rhino skeleton reference, the bones are much more vertical, but still form a balanced whole that supports the body better than the triceratops image (it costs less energy to hold upright since the bones rest on each other better). This corresponds to the straight leg in your version. However, this usually means the chest is bit less broad and the muscles are much tighter packed. Check the reference of the horses chest for example. Also, the bones of the feet/paws are different. The rhinoceros as we know it now walks around on its toes rather than its whole foot, while the triceratops's ankle is much lower. Compare this to your version, and you'll see that yours matches the triceratops in the front leg but has more of the rhinoceros in it's rear legs.

The most important point I noticed is that both the front and rear leg have some proportion issues. The lower leg bone in the front leg is much longer that the upper leg bone. The reverse is true for the rear leg, the upper leg bone is much longer than the lower leg. This would make for a kind of awkward walking cycle I suspect. In most animals I checked, the upper leg bone is almost as long as the lower leg bone. In a horses leg, or a bulls for that matter, the leg can almost be divided in three equal parts: upper leg, lower leg and foot (if you don't count the hoof). Same happens with the rhinoceros bones.

The second thing that bugged me was the front view of your critter. It lacked some major features in the chest area, and the legs didn't seem like they could move comfortably for the creature. Consider the reference image shown below of a horses chest. The bulging muscles you see in the ref below connect to the ribs and chestbone and act basically the same as the human muscles in the chest. In a rhinoceros they are a little less clear as their skin is very thick and leathery, but they are still visible.

    Hope this made some sense...

Yeah! Great stuff here! Nice to see someone else using painter (I just started). Study skeletal structures of current and prehistoric animals. A visit to your local history museum should help a lot.

Yeah, I will def be picking up some animal books in the coming pay checks. Kind of wiped myself when i bought a d60 camera. Ill probably end up posting some pix in here, in the future

This is going to be another creature for a different friend to model.

Based it off a dog's anatomy and kind of a "batboy" face.

You've definitely mastered lighting in the color area. It's been awhile since I've seen your book, so it's awesome to see how much you've improved since I last saw

I wouldn't have noticed the animal anatomy problems without Yoitsi, so you can blame him ;p

I especially enjoy your blending of creatures and animals. It looks neat-o bajeeto
Either way though, your skill is amazing, I hope to see more from you soon.

    thanks everyone
i only get like 2 hours of personal painting a day so these guys are coming along slower than normal, so i hope you don't mind them in bite sized chunks.

and yeah, i was def going for hulky. My room mate mentioned he wanted to do model a creature and a female barbarian, going to see if this will kill 2 birds with 1 stone for him.

I'll be adding more color to her later, I'm sure. I want to get some variation to the skin tone instead of being all green, even frogs have undercoats.

Those creature designs are really inspiring. The rendering is amazing. I really like how you get the textures on there like spot on. Nothing over the top or anything. I'll be checking here more often :o

your creatures look good, very good shadows and lights.
The characters are less inspired, no proportion problem though.

sorry i must have missed this question earlier, Yeah studies are very important for sure. As well as studies just make sure you keep up a routine of constantly creating and challenging yourself, because the most useful thing to an artist is understanding where they've made mistakes before and how to correct them in the future.

    Experience is everything
    hope that answers your question.
