Thats some crabs i wanna avoid. Cool stuff. Doesn't the solid white background throw off your values at all in your sketches?

Gah man, I love your work! I subscribed to this book earlier but never stopped in to post (I do that alot for some reason); must say the fact that you use painter is so inspiring! haha I'm gonna take some time out and study your process so I can pick up a tip or two

This recent one looks great, really nice progression with it. As people have said the background does have some really nice depth to it, and I like that, going left to right, the background seems to go from abstract to something more recognizable. Not a whole lot to crit, just curious as to where this is gonna keep going Keep it up!

    thanks guys
texahol from IRC chat really helped me out with some of my lighting. I'm going to have to for sure go back and edit alot of my older versions so they look correct

I doubt i would need to update them for a real concept job, but correcting them will pound the logic i was missing more into my head.

Looking very nice! I love the fiery bits.
I think you had a really nice treatment going on for the shell/flames in the previous version (post 959)with the illumination from the fire on the shell, the little shell bits sticking out etc. It seemed more..raw power-ish and I really liked that. The current version looks a lot more controlled but I like the sooty bits on the shell. I think a combination of both would be perfect. I also like the treatment of the legs in the earlier post (950) more, it has started to get chalky since then.
In this version there's a loss of depth between the two pieces of the shell (the ones above the second and third leg from the left). If the shell piece on the right is deeper within, it should have a lot more red/orange glow along the sides. If it is on the same height or protruding out more that the shell bit on the left, there should be more blue light on it.The little strip of fire you see between the two shell bits also gets very dull towards the bottom when it should actually be getting more glowy since it's towards the core of the fire.I think the shadow areas on the body could also be darker and more saturated since it's an organic form (subsurface scattering ftw!) Another thing is that since your bg has a very obvious light patch on the right, maybe it could have some rim lighting happening on that edge?
And it is missing some limbs on the far side

Paintover are so much easier :-/ Do you mind them?

Iridyse, i wouldnt mind a paint over at all. I would really like you to show me what you mean by where you said "If it is on the same height or protruding out more that the shell bit on the left, there should be more blue light on it."

All the crits were very nice, I'll be sure to check back on alot of these and work them up to a better quality.

I'll post this current one now and try to think about the crits for the final vision.

    This crab creature is AWESOME!

I love your use of colors, you have a great palette for this guy.
By the way, do you have any kind of story for him? Or the world he lives on?

    taking a crab break.

going to try to make this into slug/leech...golem beastie. I will relook at his right hand/arm as it's alittle...stiff and boring..aswell as having wrong foreshortening.

I plan on giving color a shot on this piece. I rarely color from black and white but it's worth a shot at a new method.

great creatures! You show a lot of imagination in these and the colours really bring them out of the page. The humanoids don't look quite as good as your other creatures but I'm wondering whether you're working to the same level or not.

Davi! I'll get on the paintover in a bit but I just had to pop in and say how much I love the golem. I can -see- the mass wriggling and writhing, it's beautiful!. The subtle movements in the slugs is just perfect, especially that one that's barely hanging on to the left (our right) arm. Can't wait to see the colored version. I have major trouble (silly mental blocks) with painting from grayscale to color so it would be interesting to see how you tackle this.

aw davi thats great in a nasty slugsquishy sort of way.

your stuff is feeling a lot more formed. I like the less slickly polished style you seem to be developing. looks more traditional actually. but is very descriptive of your idea without being over worked.

on the crab ligthing thing. I would think that the firey bits would cast stronger lights and shadows on to the back shell... just a thought

    I always look

Oh cool, this new one is very interesting...

You should try to add some gore to this one. I mean, maybe make there be some congealed blood in the middle or something. Maybe blood is what holds it all together, because I mean, let's face it, why would such a mass of nastiness cling together if not for food.

It just seems appropriate to me. Also, you should post up some design tips on how you come up with this stuff lol!

    Regardless, very nice.
