Thanks! Most of the reference I do my studies from don't use extreme perspective angles, but I'll see what I can find.

Designing is giving me a pretty hard time. Mostly because I'm never satisfied with the quality of my designs.

    Very nice sketchbook, Swen!
I particularly like your late gesture drawings. They remind me the quick gesture poses at the life drawing class...so hard to do; but you're doing a great job.

    Keep posting!

Thanks for the kind words. I really miss doing those gestural drawings.I'll have to squeeze them in me schedule this week.

It's been a few days but here I am again. This is the final concept for the chick I posted before. My team was pretty happy with the result and so am I. Some minor errors here and there but I really don't have time to refine it right now. I still have to do lot of concept deisgns for another game we're making. I will be posting those soon. Crits are appreciated as always.

thanks but I don't consider myself anywhere near a good digital artist. I can draw decently but painting is still my weakpoint. I have to work a lot on that. As for my wacom, I use a pretty small one, the wacom volito but I plan to buy a new one soon because it isn't that sensitive. I think the intuos is one of the best but I don't really know for sure. For me as long as I have some good basic skills it doesn't matter that much which tablet I'm using.

Thank you for the comments on my sketchbook!

I am just stunned by the incredible improvements you've made in human anatomy since the first sketches you've made and I really like your style. I also love the colors that you use in the beach scene, it is very beautiful. Your concept designs are very unique and interesting.

None of the ideas expressed above are actually mine. They are told to me by Luthor and Ferdinand, the five inch tall space aliens who live under my desk. In return for these ideas, I have given them permission to eat any dust bunnies they may find there.

I'm glad you like my designs. As for my improvements, Glenn Vilppu's simple approach for describing form is what really got me on the road.

Thanks for the suggestion. I would have to consult with my team before making a change like that but maybe the eyes should be a little lighter indeed. We'll see where it will be taken later on. After reading the enemy descriptions in the game design document tommorow I'll start producing more concepts so stay tuned!

Hi, some very dynamic poses on the first and second page! It's strange you haven't got any stars yet, so I'm adding some

Keep up the good work, I'll try to check back later.

Thanks for the stars. I think I'll get them when I deserve them. I have a lot more to practice. I'll have a look at your sb soon.

Here's some stuff to keep the pace up. Some hand and neck studies from hogarth and Kchen and a background painting for a submarine game I did last month at school. It was actually the first time I painted an environment from scratch in photoshop. Guess you don't know what you're capable of until you're forced to do it.

you were forced to do that? waw. my results would be nowhere near that good if I was just forced to do something.

can i suggest that you make the wings sharp (like the 5th pic in post 58) and make them into layers or something. like 3 blades that form a fan....or maybe not. I'm confusing myself. hehe

I noticed that it's just about knowing what you want to achieve and coming with a good plan to achieve it. Here's where a good basic knowledge of composition, lighting etc. comes into play. The more you rely on luck and guessing the harder it becomes. At least for me. Are you refering to the wings of the chicken? That could be very cool but considering it has to be modeled and the time that we have I kept it as simple as possible.

    Hey man,
you have some really impressive work here. Rather inspirational, to be honest.
You mentioned at the beginning of this thread that you study game design in The Netherlands. HKU, by any chance?

Really cool environment you did there. I doubt my first all-digital environment would turn out that well. I like the colour choices you made for it, the blues make it feel very eerie and quiet. I would normally suggest adding fish or sealife, but I think little Nemo's swimming around would ruin the mood of this.

I'm gonna check out the rest of your SB now.

You're right I'm studying at the HKU right now. Thanks for the kind words.

Glad you like it. I didn't add to much because it was a background and it shouldn't distract to much for the game. Also having fishes would make it look very static during the game since the fishes aren't moving.

Hi Swen, thanks for dropping by and commenting

Your pencils immediately caught my eye, you seem very confident in that area! Lovely shading and yes, your perspective is quite excellent. Same goes for proportions. Looks like your production design education really paid off! I really can't pick any special thing to crit. Just keep doing what you're doing, I'll check by again soon.

Hey mate glad to see your still at it, can i suggest for your neck studies that you factor in the hyoid bone and the thyroid gland they help explain what the sternomastiod is hugging on the neck, i am probably spelling them wrong but i am sure you will figure it out also maybe swing the clavicles in a a lil bit more.

    Keep up the good work.

Thanks. Pencil drawings are my strenght I think. I have to start doing more technical drawings. I'm to addicted to anatomy right now. Be sure to check out again soon.

Thanks. I still have a hard time with heads because I don't draw them enough from observation, but I'll work on that.

Thanks for the crits. The neck area still gives a lot of trouble because I didn't study the anatomy enough. I'll be looking up those bones you mentioned. As for the clavicles I was just copying what Kchen did so normally I wouldn't draw them like that. Thanks for the comment anyway.

Thanks. The neck gives me a hard time so I need to do a lot more of those.

Here's some stuff from the past days. The painting of the indian guy was done at school on one of those big ass cintiqs. Our coordinator bought two specially for us. Man those things are really sweet. Over ten years I may have enough money to buy one. The other ones are studies from reference and KChen. Comments are highly appreciated .

    Awsome, anatomy over here!
Can't believe your pulling that king of digital painting with a volito.

Little question what references are you using for learning anatomy?

Thanks! the volito is not that sensitive so I wanna get another one asap. As for my references, bridgman, vilppu and loomis are the ones I look at most of the time. Lately I've been studying Kevin Chen's drawings a lot they are really great.

yur indian dude is looking cool, it might make difference with color but his clothing tone is very close to his skin tone? just something i noticed, i also like those simplified anatomy studies any chance you can hint a bloke on a direction on where to find kchens stuff to study from? something i have found really useful lately is pecks anatomy book he explains the mechanics and architecture of the body in a really understandable way with bridge it seemed like there was allot of information left out like you where assumed to already know it anyway just a suggestion keep up the progress i hate to have to get better than you some day!!.

You're right about the skintone and the clothing the values are nearly the same that was my intention. The difference would be in the color stage as you said. I never checked out pecks anatomy so I'll have to flip trough that book when I have a chance. KChen's stuff is here on the forums as well as on characterdesign.com in the tutorials section. As for you getting better than me, you are taking life drawing classes right? That's already an advantage!
