Thanks for the heads up. Is it me or has time been going by way too fast lately.

If I remember correctly, all works have to be created in 2006, so the deadline for creating works has alredy gone by - yes? Or is it not as hard and fast as that.

Polish it up and send it anyway. It's a nice piece.

Since we've already established that it's not historically accurate, I'd say it qualifies .
Seriously, the Spectrum definition of "fantastic art" is pretty elastic.

well, technically, but the deadline for entries is the end of the month. You're probably ok just so long as you don't send it in next year too.

the Spectrum definition of "fantastic art" is pretty elastic
Yeah, more like "genre illustration" really. They frequently have historical stuff, pulp-type stuff... it's pretty loose.

Rally cry folks! Last year was pretty CA heavy, lets take it even further! LET ME SEE YOUR WAR FACE!

This is the first time I haven't had to scramble to get something ready, got all my pieces lined up, just have to get nice prints made and mail em out. Maybe I'll even get in this time... If I'm lucky... and I bribe the judges... and hell-freezes over...

    Question

    thanks for the reminder

Oh, by the way, sorry to be a bit out of subject (but I don't think it's worth a new thread), does anybody know if the Society of Illustrator will make an official announcement of the artists that are included in their 49th annual, like Spectrum use to do ?
I already asked them several times, but never got any answer...

good luck and good year !

    they already have.
the society has sent out both acceptance and rejection letters already.
though, it may take a bit to reach over seas.

I think they fall under "Awesome" with a side of "Hot Damn".

Last Man Standing is a veritable institution, man, I wonder what it would take to actually qualify as institutional.

technically, the institutional category is for art appearing in connection with:
announcements, annual reports, calendars, greeting cards, prints, portfolios, posters, plates, website graphics, collectables, and self-promotion mailers.

so, if you say made a calendar of the entries, or made a postcard of your piece...
    its eligible.

though, the institutional category is no more desirable than the unpublished category.
keep in mind that the level of work may be different, and you may actually stand a BETTER chance of getting something in in a less competitive category.
thats not to say "unpublished" is less competitive.
a lot of the work is professional work that simply wasnt used for whatever reason.
im just saying... think about it.

I don't think anyone would question it for either Institutional or Unpublished.

Institutional seems to be a catch-all for things not easily defined but were project driven. Last Man Standing seems to fit that. But then, technically it's not published or commissioned so Last Man fits that as well.

Which is easier to get into is a tricky question. When I judged I found Unpublished the easiest to do, but that doesn't mean that there wasn't a large amount of great stuff, it just meant that the disparity between the good and the bad was greater than in other categories.

I should point out that this is just my opinion, I don't actually have a connection to Spectrum annual beyond being friends with the Fenners. I do, however, work on the exhibits and we are planning for another in 2009. Any work from Spectrums 12 through 15 will be eligible...So get those entries in!

I submitted my LMS2 pieces in the SoI Annual Institutional category (but didn't get in).
For Spectrum you can go either way. You had LMS1 entry in the unpublished category last year Nic, but i think you'd do just as well in institutional. And that LMS2 Round 1 image would work in the Editorial category as well.
