    Boho's sb - LONG OVERDUE update 07.14.09

Now that I've got a workshop under my belt, I'm starting a CA sketchbook. Hopefully I'll quit being so shy about my art (always a fault of mine). I'm working on my masters, and I believe it's best to get opinions from everywhere, so please tell me whatever you think. I'm very much based in traditional art, but I want to break into digital painting (currently trying to learn painter).

Any and all feedback is welcome!

**edit: I appreciate honesty, brutal or not. I'm here to learn and be critiqued, so please don't be afraid to be honest.**

These are some traditional pieces I'd like to rework digitally...

There is a lot more to come, however Photoshop is getting funky on me, so I'll give it an hour or two... or a day, or something... Sorry about all the varied sizes... this is just what I had floating around on Photobucket.

Thanks Chaos and Envisor These are ancient... like years old. I've focused a lot more on figure drawing recently... re-training myself on the volumetrics of drawing and less so on the line quality. But there is lots more to come (more recent stuff), so stay tuned! (Chaos, I promise to up the contrast too!!)

Oh, and yes... I'm on the girls forum!! After running into Nonie at the workshop in December and learning about the calender (I wish I had known about the contest!!) I asked Davi to sign me up.

Ah... and now that Photoshop has chilled out some, I can post a few more things.

These are all much more recent... some of the better exerpts from my sketchbook during my first year of grad school. More figure drawing, but also a lot more random thoughtless drawing... working a lot from intuition, letting my mind drift while listening to music... that kinda thing.

My goals for this coming semester are to work faster, and learn to render them a little more completely digitally. I've only really done that once, and didn't recieve the greatest results, but hey, I'm trying, right? My one and only digitally rendered piece is this one. (it was my first [and currently, only] COW entry)

Ok, one more for the day. I wanted to participate in the current COW (Blue Mountain Glider) but I found out about it late, and I highly doubt I'll finish. BUT that doesn't mean I can't draw anyway. So here's a sketch... I'd like to ink it. I've been inspired by Bluefooted's work greatly today, so we'll see what happens.

Ah... Now that the semester has come to a smooth start, I can update some stuff I've been working on recently.

The first three are studies from my trip to the InSOMAnia workshop. They were great models btw.

Yay dude, you fiiinally got your sb up!! I only just noticed you had it up.

I really like some of your creature designs, the blue mountain glider looks great. Would love to see it coloured, perhaps watercolours?

Its also good to see some of your sketches fron san fran. I cant say I drew much over there, I was in too much shock for the whole of the weekend.

    Keep sketching!

ahh, my Chaos sista! ;D Due to the enthusiasm, I'll post an update for ya. I wasn't going to post until I felt finished, but hey, c&c is always good.

My adopted mentor in grad school wanted to push me to produce, so when I showed him a self portrait I had been working on, he told me to push it further... so here's what I have thus far. I'm not finished, but I like what I have

Hi Janae, I met you at Insomania. Good start to your SB. I just started mine as well. I see you've just started digital. Well then you've beaten me; I haven't gone digital yet. Question: Did you draw your self portrait traditionally first and then scan it in, or is it an all digitally rendered self portrait?
I think you should get a bigger sketchbook. The double-page spreads are dangerous especially when you come up with something you want to fully render. Dealing with the gutter sucks!

wow, thank you all for the comments I'm working on painting my last sketch right now, as well as fixing up a few minor things on the sp... I'm hoping to do a large scale print of it for my midterm. I've also bound my own sketchbook last week, so I should have some more stuff scanned and ready within the week. Things will be hectic for my midterm (lots of required reading took away from my art, unfortunately), but there will be more. Stay tuned!!

Haven't been producing as much as I'd prefer... I have one instructor who is sadistic in the amount of reading he's having our class do. It got to the point that it was interfering w/ the entire art workflow of the class, and I was getting just a little grumpy ... so yeah... the head of our grad department (and a personal friend of mine to boot) had a happy little talk with him, and the workload is coming down.

anyhoo, I finally finished that self portrait I was working on! woo!! I'll be doing a monster print of it on one of the Epsons on campus, so I'm super excited to see how it actually looks on a large scale.

    Boho's sb - LONG OVERDUE update 07.14.09

I also had a minor setback when Painter decided to go stupid on me and I couldn't figure out how to fix the damn PAP file , so I bound my own sketchbook and spoiled myself with nice papers n stuff.

    Boho's sb - LONG OVERDUE update 07.14.09

And I started a lil piece in it... this is still a WIP based off of a sketch in my little sb (shown in sequence)

    Boho's sb - LONG OVERDUE update 07.14.09

    Boho's sb - LONG OVERDUE update 07.14.09

Also started a piece based off of the sketch I posted in the previous entry, and I'm excited to see where it goes... I feel like I'm getting a feel for painter, and it's quite gratifying.

Once again, feedback is always welcome!!

Hey there, Janae. I really like the new painting you started. The concept is a good one, so I'm excited to see where this painting will go as well. Have you decided on a light source/direction? Regardless which direction, the face should be in shadow, as it is almost covered by feathers. I'll be visiting again soon to see its progress. I wish I had hung out with you more at InsoMania. I didn't even know you were Emily's roommate!
BTW, I'm thinking of getting a mac, since everyone I've talked to said they don't tend to get buggered as much.

Dang, thanks everybody for all the kudos!

escape2mars I'm assuming you're referring to the bird mask drawing in regards to the lightsource?? (it was a little unclear) My plan with is is to scan render the skin a little better with pencil (pull up more tones, define a light source etc) then scan it and digitally make light pouring out from inside of the mask... I don't know if I'm describing it well, but in my mind it should look cool (if I can pull it off!!) Oh, btw... I didn't realize you're in Tampa... you should come out to Otown and visit if you're ever in the area for theme parks and whatnot.

chaosrocks I was thinking about making her centaur-like, but I kinda ran out of paper... but I guess I can revisit her as a character later on in the sb.

Stark Thanks so much!! I think you're my first subscribe

Orbital, Blaz & mull77 Thank you all for the kind words

I've got some stuff in the works, so as soon as my final is over (and I get over this frickin cold!) I'll be posting more.

Nice book you got going here! You did a really good job of getting a likeness in the sp, i remember seeing you at the workshop. The watercolor piece is shaping up nicely, too. It would be nice to see some more life drawings and studies.
