EOW - Garbage Drop-off Planet
[Insert EOW Contest image here]
TOPIC = Garbage Drop-Off Planet
Due date: January 20th, 2007.
When Earth's population goes beyond it's universal limit, the demand for land that's needed for habitat skyrockets and becomes outpost debris. Natural environment will come to an end as humans know it if something isn't done. Not just something, anything, but one thing that leads and orbits, connects, becomes one with everything else.
- "PLEASE RECYCLE" signs become meaningful.
- The timely process of tying up your garbage bag and placing into a plastic bin is over.
- The time for compromise and elsewhere expansion has begun.
- You have an ecosystem decision on your hands.
When are landfills at a standstill?
Human existence exists somewhere on Mt. Elsewhere
As the temporary EOW host, I don't draw. On an art website when he doesn't draw - no purpose, yet purposeful, time consuming when it needs to be consumed, and fun. I write rhymed verses - you can call it rap, poetry, or just writing that rhymes.
Here is one of my collaborations with a writer named STRONGARM. I hope that this can help you on understanding the topic. Since I don't draw, at least I can post this here to be read and recognized.
Vulgar & STRONGARM - WASTE MANAGEMENT
"A man of his revenue, at the eve of the war -
Standing in a canyon of residue"
If you think green, then the forest survives in the inner me
When war is not an option, reuse the energy
Earth's most powerful industry - do you speak of the profit?
The hive's population, always keep a leaf in my pocket
Land lord of the mountain, burnt tires and car seats -
Steam from the carcass resonated through wildfires and palm trees
One citrus weed manages to rise through the concrete.
Pack a pair of watermelon goggles to identify the Grade 3 carbon
Cheap bargain at the flea market, tree auction
Now to the Discovery channel voter's panel flannel coats
School bus field trip caught in a mudslide - there goes the candy coat
Somebody's gotta do it, you have to keep the people guessing
This raspberry toothache goes out to hard workers READ THE MESSAGE
Because the fungus grows where you least expect it
Yellowstone bellows I'm searching for an ash deposit
Atmospheric disaster clouded, reroute the adapter
At the airport bench, awaiting the drought that I'm after
Umbrella flash flood villagers acknowledge the force of the force
Hitch a ride on the next tsunami wave dumped on coastal resorts
Humans move with a purpose - take flight and land one day.
In this simple urban establishment, we just live and learn
There's still a plant at the corner of the mouth -
But a different version.
Yea, the universe is infinite, urbanism,
Follow the wind or the first religion that comes to mind
Some fall behind because they just can't work the rhythm
Morning garbage pick-up, retain the state doing black bag chin-ups
Get up, and look to the measurement without knowing the time
Waste Management, this is life, remember the mines and timber
Land mass civilian, electricity makes contact with the whites of her eyes
Know that everything recyclable is growth in disguise
Inhale too many chemical, maybe the rat packs can throw in a line
Corner store disposal - you never know what you'll find
This is an extermination spanning over the dominion of dead wheat
Wilderness wilderbeasts feast upon the flesh of the red meat
It's the land of opportunity, Translation: You'd better run
A satin shadow waiting for the city bus that will never come
The plumber brotherhood working side by side to end the landfills,
Sunflower gun powder - it's all at a standstill.
Who'd have thought the cycle of nature was black and corrupt
With dead human bodies in the back of the truck.
“A man of his beliefs, in the aftermath of destruction -
Kneeling in a field of the deceased"
Recycling concentration camp, the current fate we’re under
With glass and plastics separated by size, shape and color
Racism replaced by another form of segregation
It's the norm: ignore the revelation,
Instead ingest more meds for thorough meditation
Waste not want not, history’s most infamous lie
Dissident since witnessing frugal African tribes die
Animals slaughtered for the choicest cuts sold at top price
What's not fit for human consumption,
Ground to powder and fed to what we feed on throughout life
Utilize the concept, view vagrants as "displaced meat"
Feed the homeless.. to the starving, a genuine taste of the streets
Karma's in motion, marvel in it's marvelous notion
Frankenstein’s monster perfected, our freewill power is broken
Cremate the dead, mix their ashes with concrete, the foundation
For the next generation to build on top of and blossom a proud nation
Stop the violence, complacent brawlers expand your fists
SAVE THE WHALES..! Casino's need big gamblers to exist
Don't exhaust natural resources, dispose of greed
Use paper sparingly, It's not like it grows on trees..! Oh wait...
Ignore inner city greenery, champion the rain forest botanical
Count sheep to fall asleep, for short naps try an endangered animal
Be a puppet with no strings attached or a boss
Buy recycled arithmetic books for a fraction of the cost
Process of elimination: profit through gossip and intimidation
The newest innovation, making progress misusing affiliations
Environmental terrorist with threats of acid rain
Money gets invested into Science, the ransom cash is claimed
The end of existence exists yet we pretend it’s distant
Enlist in a resistance NOW to resist twisted politician misfits
Who speak with Nuclear weapons so their message comes through loud
Eager to appease peace loving vegetarians with mushroom clouds
Accept your mistakes or face worse excerpts of terrors
Whiteout may lead to Cancer...
Factor the health risks before attempting to correct your errors
Children are the future, a perfectly designed capsule
So Pedophiles molesting kids are really just attempting time travel
Evil spawns without warning, time for repenting freed breeding
Working our fingers to the bone like the Blind attempting speed reading
Depleting the ozone, leaving every layer thinner
Until human beings are the universes newest microwaveable dinner..!
Before morgues, before our species even uttered words or sentences
Insects: God’s original clean up crew, were to thank for Earth’s Cleanliness
Organizing organisms and other organic doomed specimens
Vulgar and STRONGARM, Waste Management union representatives
Let the environmental empires be built.
Good luck, artists, architects, philosophers, and garbagemen!
Private message me anytime for further suggestion.

Thank you Vulgar'
Not hassling you, but you'd better pick a deadline so you don't get a thousand PMs about it.
This is going to be an interesting one. Wonder if yAdam will come back for it. His hunting ground was relevant to this topic.
January 3rd, 2007 #4
I suppose my hunting ground one was kind of similar to this, though I'm not sure if the description is a bit too convoluted and philisophical. I have no problem with that really, but maybe just a title and a short paragraph would be easier for us to figure out (or just confuse me less) ??? Not saying you should change it by the way, its only a suggestion.

Well, when I first saw the new topic, it scared the hell out of me, because it would seem to involve drawing mountains of man-made objects, which would be so far out of my comfort zone it wouldn't even be funny. However, after thinking on it a bit I think I can come up with something a little easier and less intimidating. I'm currently thinking of an image of either poor humans or primitive aliens salvaging the latest dump, with the dump-ship flying away in the distance. Or something like that.

^Yes, I forgot to mention the movie "Soldier" with Kurt Russel, which takes place on a planet dedicated to human waste.
Any more participants?

Garbage drop off- Planet velo
-In the year 2700 our planet was over-burdened with waste...namely our own waste. Why not burn it all you say...what are you insane! Pollute the whole atmosphere with that junk! Instead we came up with a better solution. We found that desolate planet. Not a single living thing on it and nothing at all of scientific value. Nobody would care if we put our junk and waste here...right? We would rather put it here then send it floating into space. Those alien buzzards might be miffed if it got a dirty baby diaper on it's chrome ship...heck...that might start another space war and we don't need that again. So years have passed by and we dumped so much waste on there that a green smog has surrounded the whole thing. The crew that dump that crap tell me the strangest things now...that strange life and organisms have sprouted out of the ground. They say it is a green utopia down there. Yeah right...I bet it's also stinky too.
Vulgar-suggestion, you might want to start bugging the administrators. They still don't have this topic on the front page like the new other weekly activities.

J.Mac - You can post your progression in this thread, just be sure to post the final version when it's completed.
Trashy - I can feel the green apple drone already. Thanks for being the first to post an entry. Your suggestion will come into motion soon. Do you know which moderator controls the text at the top of the page?
January 9th, 2007 #19
I'd say Hyver is a good bet if you're looking for somebody to exercise some mod powers. Metaphysiks, Fozzybar, and Romance are listed as the moderators at the bottom of the "Community Activites" level of the forums. I get the impression Red Rook is kind of busy.

I just private messaged a moderator.
Anymore entries, artists of Earth?
January 10th, 2007 #22
Very nice poetry, Mr V. I can dig it.
I'll try and find time to give this a go.
Trashy - you may want to reassess your colour scheme as it's pulling optical illusions on me! The duller, less-contrasted colours recede and your green background comes forward. I would also suggest avoiding such a bright green, as a colour that bright only exists when you have an artificial lightsource present (unless they can be generated by some sort of deep-sea glowing fish, in which case it may occur in nature).

The Bowls of Sicikan
The Bowls of Sicikan, famed spaceport of the garbage planet Sicikan, and also widely known as the "Toilet Bowls of the Galaxy" served the overpopulated Terran colonies as their one-stop hygiene solution. Tons of garbage are unloaded into the Bowls every single day, then flushed into the processing chamber, and converted into bio-degradable substances, artificially enhanced for rapid decay.
January 13th, 2007 #24
Kougansharde - Like the concept, you should enhance the detail on those ships/vehicles in the backround cloud areas.
January 15th, 2007 #25
In the year 2300 human colonisation has far exceeded all calculations, and lead to the implimentation of Pit Planets to 'solve' the waste problems. Each cluster of planets has its own Pit Planet - a very undesirable place to live, compiled of the dregs of society, not to mention the smell. But at least the rent is cheap...
The surface of these planets is terraformed around large pits used for waste disposal. Garbage shuttles are constantly relaying waste from surrounding planets to the cluster's Pit Planet.

IMPORTANT! Only throw non-recyclables in the red depositories. All waste from the red depositories are immediately hyperspaced to Cygna Beta. Wastes bound for Cygna Beta will NOT be pre-sorted, hyperspace transmission is instantaneous. There is absolutely no return of any items placed in red depositories.
With the advent of stable zero energy hyperspace transport fields in 2120, Mankind quickly spread through the galaxy...fortunately his garbage did not. Easily installed in designated rubbish bins a series of transport fields immediately gate all materials tossed into the bin to reciever fields orbiting Cygna Beta. Cygna Beta is a massive body orbiting the Cygna Alpha Singularity. With intense tidal forces rubbish is quickly fused into dense rocklike deposits and eventually pulled into the singularity. The reciever station is located on the tidal pole opposite the singularity in a relatively stable orbit and waste is continuously flowing out from its many hyperspace reciever fields. Though the garbage planet is constantly being devoured into the black hole, mankinds garbage flow is more than enough to keep the planets heavy mass replenished.
The use of these hyperspace transport bins for rubbish was nearly outlawed soon after it was put into operation as many saw the bins as a way to immediately and permanently dispose of criminal evidence, suicides, even murders were committed using the initial rubbish bins. It was decided by majority vote by the Network of Forward Thinking Rehabilitationists that the advantages of the system outweighed the sudden spree of mysterious disappearances and crime. Its worth noting that within 78 years of use of the rubbish bins and permanent disposeall units the population growth of humanity has stabilized and suicides and murder are almost nonexistant. The department of missing persons maintains a steady growth rate and employment therin is at a premium.
The recieving station at Cygna Beta is also a popular tourism site. From its upper decks, viewers have an unparalelled sight of continuous planetary destruction set against a backdrop of the beautiful outer galactic arm.

Nice stuff so far.
Martian incinerator, 1 (since 2027): The waste transfer from Earth to Mars was a slow process when it began. But, the inaugural incinerator continues to operate today, and still mantains the minimum waste threshold. When recyclying levels on Earth fell below 15% solutions were quickly passed through world government officials. The best solution was also considered the most drastic. In 2020 an attempt to terraform Mars was undertaken by NASA, but, after spiralling costs and scientific study into their methods it was terminated. After NASA's failure it was calculated that the surface of Mars would take a further 244 years before terraforming could re-start. Considering this the Government decided that Mars would be the ideal place to transfer waste to, hoping that the problem would be eradicated before the 244 years ended.

Cognition - Mechanical mega-dome coming alive. I can feel the architecture vibrating already. Thanks for submitting!
TomCardin - Aye fellow garbage representative, if you are planning on adding onto your entry, here are a few suggestions for improvement: Create better lighting on the top-mid portion of the left image. It's darkened exterior doesn't allow the viewer the full examination that your galaxical outpost provides. There could also be more star distribution in the black backround. Thanks for submitting!
yAdam - Your stylistic theme reminds me of Hideyoshi's artistic depiction. This copper-plated transport area is slightly blurry to the art interpreting retina. I'd suggest ground level directions where the humans are standing. If you look at a street or an airport runway, there are arrows and directory codes for vehicles, planes, and other forms of metallic flight. Deposits of red sand along the rooftops would be a personal touch as well. Thanks for submitting, Adam.
Keep doing you

Hey Vulgar, no problem. Cheers for the suggestions.. The point of the shuttle is not to land, just drop the waste, though that is probably not 100% clear in the concept. Not to say there might not be a need for ground lights though, may add something in before the deadline....
The blurriness of that area is supposed to be caused by dust due to the shuttle engines, and in part the haziness from the incinerator.
I can see some resemblance to Hideyoshi's work and I guess there's a lot of influence from conceptart.org on everyone's art.

Thank you for the feedback Vulgar! I played around with your crit and I think it really improved the image. I also took down the saturation a notch in the non-direct lit areas.
