    nuki's nook - a Sketchbook 30/11/06

    Dum - Dee - Daah

Gnah I can't find a fitting introduction to you....well....um, I'm a lazy guy called Martin Kenzel, 19 years old, livin in Austria. I wanna start a sketchbook to force myself to draw daily so I get rid of those annoying anatomical issues, stiff figures etc... aaand ofcourse to get feedback on my work, if you have some spare time and a noble spirit
Ill start right off with some sketches I made today and yesterday.

Note: These are all digital, ill get some pencilwork scanned as soon as possible.
The girl falling down was photo reffed, the last ones are painted while watching the film "Reservoir Dogs" (pause key -hooray )

thnx drd..and I thought the foreshortening wud be me biggest issue ^^

sketchpage from the last hour, tried to get more loose and get away from the lines. I personally like the angry faces and the looser hand one...the girl is crap -.-. Any ideas how to get away from those standard faces?
aand I gotta improve me hatching style..

    ..more to follow - nukeh

    Hi Nuki,
You are tracing images sometimes, right? That's a habit I suggest you don't get into if you want to really learn to draw. Aside from that, though, you've really got some good work coming along here. I love your color-studies of of ol' what's-his-name - crud, I should really remember because I used to have a crush on that actor. ;-) Anyway, if you are looking for sketchbook ideas, check out the Concept Art 101 link in my sig. . .

I think you are awesome, and I wish you the best in your endeavors, but I am tired of repeating myself, I am very busy with my new baby, and I am no longer a regular participant here, so please do not contact me to ask for advice on your career or education. All of the advice that I have to offer can already be found in the following links. Thank you.

Perspective 101, Concept Art 101, Games Industry info,Oil Paint info, Acrylic Paint info, my sketchbook.

Awright, very good stuff. I like the drawings from the first post - very neat and with good (for me) technique I like them all.

thanks for the reply seedling, actually the 101 thread is in me favorites allready...just found it too late to enter
I dont really know what you mean by "tracing" an image. I dont put the image into the background layer if you mean that, i got a dual screen installation here and i got the ref on the righ screen - the "canvas" on the left one...its no true life drawing but still... And Bruce rocks - especially in his role as Butch nd The last Boy Scout
I hope to get my scanner working soon, made bout 10 sketchpages this weekend, all true life drawings..I really like them and I'd love to share, but digicam will be the last way out

Thanks Saise, im really trying to get some vivid hatching in there, i personally love the falling guy. Im actually looking for some good anatomical ref, and also, I'm asking meself how much anatomical understanding is nescessary...I mean, does an artist have to know each tiny muscle plus its latin name like seen in medical books? I cant beleive that, I'd be interested in your points of view

€dit: Seedling I gotta tell ya what great thread the 101 is...I truely respect people that use their spare time to help out others, and you nearly wrote a whole book there. Truely noble person you are

finally got the scanner working - huge update now. Scans from my A5 sketchbook I'm currently studying hands with and some of the Weekend Session (on the chequered pages). Plus one small digipainting i did, testing some brushes
And also my work on Assignment #1 of seedlings CA101 thread...A lil weird though, gotta buy some bigger ink pen. 0.1 seems far too small and doesnt create closed but noisy lines.

Hmm. I'm looking at the faces of your characters and they are looking a little flat to me. I suggest trying to visualize drawing the head using block forms to see the ridge of the eyebrow, the eye socket cavity, and the area under the cheakbones (zygomatic arch). Loomis and Hogarth have some good reference for this I like your enthusiasm and volume of your work -keep drawing!

I really appreciate your comment softocean, thanks. You made me discover that I actually got no clue about eye placement, cheekbones, etc.. this might be why my faces look outta proportion. I'll see if I get my hands on a Loomis or Hogarth.
I'm still rather new to figure drawing and all the info's kinda flooding my head pld:

thy better results of my 15 minute scribbling - focused on heads today. Im soo much lookin forward on my books to arrive - ordered "Drawing Heads" from mr Loomis, Peck's "Anatomy Atlas" and "Srawing the Draped figure" by Bridgman. Anyone wanna add something for the book order that will follow when im through those?
Oh, btw, I'm actually workin on an animation project for my candidature on the UAS for Multi Media Art. The topic is underground. I wondered if i might post some of my work for it, even if its 3d..

Time to update this book again. Just got some older (1 month) pages scanned and put together the recognizable stuff. The last page was done today, while my PC was rendering. Sorry for the partly blurred images, but i got a crap scanner (means i'm too lazy to learn how to handle it) and had to "reduce noise" afterwards..
Thank you seedling and cubes for giving me the motivation to update

after a scan orgy of about 2 hour here we got the result of the last 2 weeks. I definitely need to train some animal to do the scanjob for me....that would be cool, yay
