Hey Dude, well as far as metal goes Try think of it as a mirror ( depending on the metal of course) And try to pick up light from the environment itself.

A good example of that would be Janashi's chrome ball self portrait that you probably already saw. Maybe grab something metallic, point a desk lamp to it and paint away. It won't help you finish the metallic armor you want, but it might just make you understand metal and surfacing a bit more .

shamagim - ah,but of course! i'd remembered that it reflects light very well, but i'd quite forgotten that polished metal reflects just about everything. thanks for stopping by!
clockwork bunny - cool y'know that comment really brightened my evening (figuratively )

goddamn i'm much too late for bed again! fuck! now all i'll see when i close my eyes is myself painting endlessly away at something. arghh!
more rendering on that chow piece.

lateman - cheers! the few photoref'd things i do,i normally keep for myself, but maybe i'll start posting them in the future. (they're usually pretty crappy).

god i suck at environments. first one i liked till i realized it's boring and totally wonky in perspective. (plus that knight is a big heap of suck)
second one i'm content with in the sense that i get nauseous

Even though you might not be feelin it, I really dig what's going on in that last creature -- I like the head, mandibles, neck, and torso... Good forms and a unified aesthetic. Also, that mustard-yellow/metallic-blue combo is really appealing to me.

One suggestion: Sometimes a coupluv real simple lines to represent the plane of a flat surface can help train your brain to firmly seat such a creature on the ground.

Yet another piece that shows improvement in your abilities to think and render volumetrically.

i second what Will said, i dig that last critter as well, cool color combo, cool head, its a promising start indeed, keep working on it! not by doodling on top of it, but erasing and redrawing bits to give 'em proper form, cleaning up the silhouette, using reference (and patience) for the skin pattern(as last thing), and for adjusting the anatomy (its explicitly gorilla-shaped, wich is good, so go check some reference about that, to see if you got the stance all right, the knucle-walking things right etc etc.)
hang on to this, hang on to something at least once in a while until it looks great.

    that christmas card looks good

    ciao
