    concept:

The pinkish Treehugger chooses his fruit-tree when young and will hug it tenderly for life.
Some say they are too peaceful for their own good but those people are just jealous and need a hug.
Only during the mating periods they climb down to meet their partner(s) and make sweet love.

    concept:

The Pinkish TreeHugger is a small mammal descended from the Squirrel family. It has a very long, up to 3 feet in some cases pre-tensile tail that allows it to secure it’s self to the trees that it makes it’s home.
The treehugging is not only a form of communication for the Pinkish’s but also a defence mechanism if attacked. The grip that a pinkish can have on a tree is simply unbelievable at times. Also as part of there defence abilities the Pinkish’s can whistle in many different octave ranges…and as a rule are not within human hearing tolerances, however the sound waves can and do act as a deterrent for most predators.

    Clamper
    Rufescens Ursus Bradypus
The Clamper is a distant relative of the Sloth. When young clampers leave their mothers, they find a young tree and clutch to it. It is widely believed the Clampers never leave the trees they pick out as their "partner". They form a symbiotic relation with the tree, and grow up together with the tree. The trees inhabited by the Clampers are recognizable by the curve in the trunk. This characterizing curve is caused by the weight of the Clamper. Because they are believed to never leave the trees they inhabit, it is not sure how these animals procreate. Biologists studying them in the wild never caught one leaving its tree. This may also be the main reason the Clampers are almost extinct. Biologists are not quite sure why the Clampers choose to live their lives clutched to a tree, they believe that the Clampers form some sort of love relation with the tree they choose. The herbivoric Clampers feed very little because of their low metabolism. They also have very little to no natural enemies. The main reason for this is that their meat tastes very nasty and is extremely stringy. However, they do attract a lot of insects with the growth on their back. Whenever a tree with a weird curve is seen in a forest, it is highly likely that it was once inhabited by a loving clamper.

The peaceful pink tree hugger is a small shy creature. lives only on Siberian peachtrees (also very rare). Living on the purple peach curculios these creatures inflate as they mature in their life cycles with lighter than air hydrogen gas. This means that the older examples of this species must Hug the upper branches of the peach trees to prevent them from floating off like minidirigibles. Since disturbing this creature is likely to result in fireball explosions, they have no predators and thus live out there existance undisturbed.....

    Paxichells
Paxichells are reptiles distantly related to both turtles and basilisks though they lack the latter's magical powers. Paxichells are unable to withdraw into their shells for protection. This is due to the extra set of legs. Paxichells have six limbs. Paxichells are slow moving, but their legs are incredibly strong. They can climb trees, sticking to them like glue. It's almost impossible to pry one off, once adhered. The shell is as hard as dragon scales. They are vegetarian, quite harmless, and easy prey if caught on the ground. Flipped on their backs, with their soft belly exposed, they are very vulnerable. Dark elves find the meat of the paxichell quite tasty and even a little intoxicating when eaten raw. They enjoy the taste of the paxichell so thoroughly, they will even venture from their underground lairs for brief hunts during daylight hours, when the paxichell is more easliy captured foraging for food on the ground.

    Greater Arborial Quadrapus
The arborial quadrapus is a distant relation to its marine kin the octopus. Although, now that it has made the move to land on a genetic level, it will most likely form a new class since Cephalapoda doesnt quite fit anymore. The quadrapus lives in the most dense parts of coastal forests where there is a substantial amount of plantlife. The quadrapus requires a consistent amount of high humidity to remain healthy (a genetic remainder from its aquatic ancestry) and so the moist air found in such forests is ideal. In addition, the quadrapus has formed an evolutionary symbiosis with the Sunfire mushroom. This fungi only grows in the deepest forests and is highly toxic to most organisms. However, because the quadrapus is a recent addition to the forest ecosystem it has a natural immunity to the poison. In fact, the mushroom is necessary to the quadrapi's survival since it produces a chemical necessary for production of an anaesthestic pheromone. This pheromone possesses a similar effect to laughing gas and keeps predators in a dazed "peaceful" state when in close proximity to the quadrapus. When under great duress, the quadrapus often released a concentrated cloud of the phermone which instantly incapacitates the assailant. In return for a food source and defense mechanism, the quadrapus inadvertently spreads Sunfire mushroom spores when releasing its pheromones. Quadrapi are easily spotted in the deep woods since they bioluminesce, a result of mushroom ingestion.

    Venuxian chirping bark eater
these strange but beautiful creatures live in the deepest jungles of the YinSloth thier chirping can be heard throughout the
jungle. They spend most of thier lives crawlling amoungst the Sluff trees on which thier diet solely consists. Luckily for the tree this is a symbiotic relationship.{the trees only reproduce once they have been defolliatted and skined by the Tree Hugger} The Tree Huggers use thier long chirping beaks to gnaw through the trees branches as they climb upwards eatting the bark as they go. Every so often the Tree Huggers drop a small but fully developed offspring from thier anterior egg sack
to continue thier life cycle. It is unknown if they coupulate or are asexually reprouduced.

This strange creature was often found along the roads, standing still and holding firmly for particular kind of trees found in this place, moon apple trees.
The creature had a chilling effect on passing by drivers with this crazy abnormal look on its face, standing and swinging with a wind when being caught in the headlights.
Fruit of moon apple trees have an intoxicating effect on any living organism. So this creature, known as a Peaceful Tree Hugger, is simply drunk all the time and not capable to move
around independently. It stands along the road, incapable to go far away from its object of addiction.

    Tree Backed Mawslug
Deep within the vibrant forests of Grenishpang 55, an unsual alien planet a few hundred galaxies away, dwells the Tree Backed Mawslug. Although horrifying in apperance its actualy a peacfull and helpful creature to its nieboring inhabitants. At birth it climbs the nearest tree with its slug like mouth. It then penetrates the spine like hair on its back deep into the top of the main trunk of the tree. As the Mawslug grows its forms a symbiotic balance with the tree as its hair and inner digestive track bond with the tree. Feeding on bugs that get to close to its spungy tounge mouth; it shares its consumed food with the tree as the tree shares its absorbed nutrients from the soil. Its believed that the trees of the region are pink from the activities of this intresting creature.

    The Lopifaunt
Lopifaunts live in groups. They help each other in survival. Gathering food is their life. Lopifaunts are very agile animals and they appear to be quite intelligent. Their coöperation in finding food and logical solutions to problems concerning food that's (temporary) out of reach is striking. Generally they eat insects, worms etc that live under rotting trees and loose rocks.
The Lopifaunt is a passive being, it will never engage in battle. Even in mating season they don't hassle, since fighting is a waste of time, certainly in mating season when you are supposed to be hav... well you know.
For this rare peacefullness, this critter is lovingly called the Pinkish Peaceful Treehugger.
    Lopifaunt Facts:
    - In 1968 there was a sudden boom in Lopifaunt sightings. This is strange since it is a rather rare species.
    - Generally when tourists see the Lopifaunt in exotic locations, they often think they're drunk (sangria, cocktails...) due to the resemblance with the purely fictional Pink Elephant.
    - Jim Henson wanted to make a puppet based on the Lopifaunt, but in one way or the other the trunk mechanism got constantly sabotaged by unknown vandals. So the idea was cancelled.

    Mongoth
These large, 4 armed creatures are a pest. Trails of destruction are left as they frollick through the wilderness spreading their affection. For reasons unknown, they feel compelled to hug every tree in sight. But they often become too caught up in the joyous moment and hug a little too hard. This is generally followed by a 10 minute period of mourning over the uprooted or snapped tree, before forgetting all about it and moving onto the next.
Perhaps they are one of mother nature's jokes, like the Platypus or the Dugong, and she is laughing away as these big, camp creatures destroy forests.

    Chuirl
This creature is also know as the tree-hugger because it always looks like he is hugging tree's with his four tentacles.
The reason why he is doing this is so that he can use his arms to eat all the little critters that crawl on the bark of the tree, 2 of his 4 arms do not have hands but razor sharp points, this is to scrape critters out of all the cracks in the bark. With his other 2 hands he catches the critters that he gets from the bark and eats them.
The tentacles do have another function, it sticks to the tree because it sucks himself vacuum with the tentacles
This way it drinks from the tree, and they dont have to crawl to some creek to get a drink, they can just go the next tree
The Chuirl has no enemy´s and it doesnt need any other creatures to survive..

This creature is here on earth, but on another paralel plane,
you will need to get intoxicated with Peyote and guided by the Shaman in order to ever see it.
The shaman calls it "Taleelayo", the acidheads of the western world mearly call it "Gonzo".

    The pink-firefly
strictly seen this creature is a parasytic organism, it uses another lifeform for its own purpose: in one special week every year the whole population of fireflys come together in the woods they were born, their little bodys ( not bigger than a humming bird ) swollen from the feet to the head with millions of eggs and a viscous liquid
then every firefly of this countless swarm begins to penetrate the branches and the bark of the trees; they put their trunk in every hole and every crack and every slit they can find and pump this liquid and their eggs in
the adult fireflys die after they have accomplished their mission, but inside of the trees happens a magical change: just a few hours after the contact with the pink fireflys the viscous liquid makes the trees to create new blossoms in which the eggs ripe...a few hours later a new population of pink fireflys leave the forest, ready to come back next year to complete the circle of life.

    Megaplatypus Gladstoniensis
The Panacean period, so-called "the lost geological period of the Earth", is considered the age where life on the planet reached its peak of variety and exuberance. Not since then so many diverse creatures walked the continents, and never so many branched out from their species in wild biological experimentation, creating the most outrageous animals and plants ever seen.
According to the foremost (and only) authority in the Panacean during the XVIII century, Professor. Eric H. Gladstone, the period (situated between the Paleogene and Neogene sub-periods) was the craddle of many of the modern era's species. Scientific journals of the time hailed the discovery as the "confirmation that the Garden of Eden really existed". Beautiful illustrations of giant mammals and birds roaming a green oasis full of fruits and flowers excited the public's imagination.
Professor Gladstone was on its way to the top of the English scientific community, and his weekly lectures were the toast of London. Every time he would bring fossils of brand new creatures unearthed by his crew in the Sahara desert; The most famous of all was the Megaplatypus, a 5-meter-long ancestor of the modern marsupial. The professor described it as a "Pinkish Peaceful Treehugger", a creature that would break huge tree trunks and use them as nests for semi-hybernation. Other creatures like proto-birds would use the enormous body of the Megaplatypus as a safe haven against predators, even building their own nests on its back, and cleaning the creature of parasites while it slept. How he learned that much about the creature's behaviour, nobody knew. Most of the professor's descriptions were in fact pure speculation, but his charisma and tales of mythical creatures captured the country's eye.
But soon the meteoric career of the professor faded away, as other scientists denounced his "showmanship disguised as academia". The Paleontology Association of England denied the existence of the Panacean period, and dismissed the fossil records. As fast as he became the darling of the scientific community, professor Gladstone fell into indigence, being last seen in the streets of London's East Side, mumbling about Panacea to everyone who would listen.
Recently, a revival of his work is happening all over the world. Some people say that, although some of his conjectures were exagerations, not all of his theories were wrong; they pinpoint Gladstone's fall from grace to one of his last lectures, in which he suggested the existence of a super-advanced Black Civilization in the heart of Africa during the Panacean period, which did not fare well with the eurocentric vision of the world at the time. According to these people, he was discredited by a massive campaign orchestrated by conservative groups deep rooted in the government, which did not like the idea of a non-white civilization giving birth to the human race.
Little by little, snippets of Eric H. Gladstone work are surfacing around Europe, but not much survived. The most impressive of all pieces is a life-size model of the Megaplatypus used by the professor in his lectures. It was recently sold at Ebay for 500 pounds by an unknown collector.

    Elodinian Ponquat
Ponquats of Elodinia are now protected by the Intergalactic Creature Preservance Society (I.C.P.S.). Several centuries ago the Ponquats were just about extinct, as poachers from many worlds came to hunt them for their skins. These passive creatures live high in the trees, usually not far from rivers, streams, and lakes. They are found now having pinkish skin with bright hues of magenta and red, but legend has it that ancient Ponquats could be seen having different colors throughout. Their colors prevent them from camouflaging into the trees, but most predators in their area stay closer to the ground, and the Ponquats have excellent vision and smell. They usually keep to themselves, and it is just as common for them to travel and live in groups as it is to find one alone. They eat small insects and suck on honies and thick liquids that ooz from the trees and are rich in sugar. Although they are fairly large, strong, and quick, there is no record of one ever attacking a human, but they are not easily scared and are often so bold as to approach people wandering close by. Usually loud noises are enough to keep them at a distance, and they seem smart enough to know when they are not wanted around or are in danger.

The Labasciga can be found in the lush forests of Liaru’s 3rd moon, Dores. This species’ dominant side is occupied by the female, as it is larger than its male counterpart and occupies a more important role. The males live inside its protective shell, at times housing up to four in the mating season. The female also provides the males with food which she “probes” from within the trunk of the Inaru trees. The males on the other hand must protect the soft and vulnerable eggsack situated on her lower side from potential predators. Thus she leads a peaceful life, providing for her protective mates. When a new female hatches from her eggsack, the dominant male carries the newborn onto another treetrunk.

These gentle creatures feed mostly on tree fruits. They have developed very rough underbellies through their napping rituals. The majority of their day is spent gathering tree tops under their arms, before one quick leap places them on top of a lush pillow of leaves. It can sometimes take a dozen trees to hold the massive bodies of these mammals above ground. They've developed the nickname "Cherry Cow" for their diet in fruit, as well as their signature "cherry on top" display of laying on treetops. For the most part they sit and boil in the sun, soaking up the heat that will keep them warm througout the night.

Here we see the Rose Tree Hugger (Complectus rotilus) in its natural environment. On the ground, it will move awkwardly, but in the branches of the trees its forward-crooked limbs work remarkably well, allowing it to move gracefully. Many Huggers spend their entire lives in the canopies of the often century-old Aurita trees, seeking out the nourishing leaves. Its teeth and digestion system are finely tuned to these leaves, to the point where it can't eat anything else.

Although the name of this species is misleading, this creature is actually part of the Cat family and gets its nickname for resembling a bear. Over many millenia, this breed of cat has learned to stand upright, growing long arms and stubby legs. It spends the vast majority of it's time sleeping utop trees. Little is known about the pink furr, but it is believed that the small animals and insects that this feline feeds on in the trees may be the source of this color. More research is required.

    Pearl Eyed Mushroom Glider
This docile species has derived from the reptilian and bird families both distinctive in many ways but it's also believed that birds evolved from reptiles tracing back over 150 million years ago. Mushroom gliders contain no claws nor do they conceal any kind of deadly or harmful aspects of anatomy. They use their large padded feet lined with billions of tiny little hairs on the soles of each toe and the ball of their heels to form a magnetic effect allowing them to adhere to practically any surface.
They are particularly fond of one location which is a dense forest baring nutrients that appeal very much to this peaceful exotic blend of species. When feeding the Pearl Eyed Mushroom Glider uses a very long proboscis-like purple tongue to find its way into knots and opened wounds on the tree. The source of this nutrition is provided by the pink mushrooms scattered all over this safe haven. The pink mushroom or otherwise known as candy pops contain an extremely potent neurotoxin that all predators and animals know to stay away from. This bright display of color is a warning to stay away. The Mushroom Glider is impervious to its poison but doesn't eat them, it feeds on a secretion they leave just behind the trees outer layer of bark. Being capable of changing the color of their skin, the Mushroom Gliders use this to their advantage when feeding. Turning a bright pink while they lay still for hours feeding on this liquid secreted nutrient, the Glider is safe from any predators.
When most Gliders reach maturity their body is covered in a thick fungi-like moss and their feathers turn weathered and dull, looking like a rotting piece of fungi but capable of moving at high speeds and gliding over distance of hundreds of feet from one tree top to the next.

When the first colonists arrived on Alterra they were overwhelmed by the myriad of lifeforms that lived within it's dense jungles. One of the first creatures they saw were the abundant tree dwellers they called the Alterran Sapsucker. This large, mollusk like creature spends the majority of it's life hugging the side of the Coral trees endlessly drinking the delicious sap within them.
Several scientists began studying the Sapsucker, and were surprised by its unique existence. It seems as if the animal processes the trees sap into a semi-viscous liquid which it sprays from its anus. This liquid coats the ground around the tree, and enables a huge colony of fungus to grow at its roots. The fungus in turn provides the tree with a very potent fertilizer; a natural Alterran miracle grow! Once the fungus gets large enough the Sapsucker mates with the small round male that also lives on the tree, and lays its eggs safely within the fungus. It appears that the Sapsuckers are monogamous creatures that spend their lives together. However, even though the male is constantly waving its penis in the air, the female Sapsucker only pays attention to him when she wants to be impregnated.
Nobody knows why, but for some reason a colonist decided to drink the secretions from the Sapsucker (my guess is it smells good). They found that the secretions were delicious, and had effects similar to Earth-grown marijuana. Unfortunately, within a few years almost all of the colonists did nothing but sit around and drink Sapsucker shit because of its addictive properties. Since then the Earth Colonization Society has given up on further efforts to expand the Alterran colonies due to the fear of illegal commercial distribution of Sapsucker Juice.

In order to reproduce, they rely on confused birds and insects to transmit genetic material between different animals. It has been determined that these creatures derive pleasure from contact to their genitals, and they will go to great lengths to attract any life form to tough them. In the springtime when pollinating insects and birds are extremely active, the moans of the Fornicatus Exteriorus can be heard throughout the forest.

buddy, you know i love you - of course in a perverse and sick way - but your creature is not pink...no it's NOT! Look again! YES, the eggs ARE! But the creature is NOT!!! LOOK!!!!

    same as Magicbear.

Well, it's pink, it's peaceful...but where does it hug trees? I will interprete the pose of the right creature as a try to show that this creatures sometimes have to "hug" trees to get the ants inside.

The reason why redehlerts entry got rejected and yours not is that you used colors which may vary to pinkish in different monitor settings or even personal perception...NO redehlert, your monitor doesn't show greens as pink!!! I KNOW! And you are not colorblind...and you're doing medical illustrations...i hope the flesh there is not GREEN!!!!

Now in all fairness, it said "pinkish". Which implies that the creature does not have to be entirely pink, or even have a large area of pink. If it needed to have alot of pink, then it should've just said "Pink Peaceful Treehugger".

Voted for vanvalen, creature put charm on me from the first time I saw it. In my opinion, it Is true tree hugger, fast, lighthearted as was odered, sweet, extremely likable. Very appealing image and I believe it exists somewhere.

    ah well....dare to be different.
the crazy thing is that my creature is merely resting on the tree while the eggs/umbilicus is huggin' the tree, and is pink (and peaceful, at that).
i took a risk to make the beginning journey of this creature as pink and the adulthood green to create harmony on the page. no harm, no foul. and yes, all blood is green thereby making skin green. i'm vulcan, you're vulcan....embrace it. hah! live long and prosper!
    cheers!

Hey Foz you put the name of my critter in the voting instead of my username. Probably doesnt matter much, but thought you might be so kind as to fix it.

    Thanks

oh yeah, a lot of great entries, I should have my vote in with some c&c later today.

    I voted for Stephan_R's Cherry-Cow.

Really difficult week and was humming and haaaing over 4 at least.

Cherry-Cow got my vote because it looked blissed-out and very peaceful. I liked the skin texture and the face was very appealing. Great!

Wow, what a display of quality!

This was really hard, but had to go with cognition.sb just because the creature has such a rockin' expression. Very cool.

Detailed C&C post coming up, even though most of you are on a level way above me. Hope that's OK.

Stephan_R got my vote because I like the idea in combination with the used techniques and colors. And it has little rabbits! Hehe

This decision was not an easy one. I love the technique of Mike Corriero's image... great colors and creature.

Same at Supervlieg and xgabos images. ...but finally the idea from Stephan worked most for me.
... and his one has rabbits... damn...

voted for Stephen_R. Just looks like a great design out of a childrens' book. Excellent job!

I liked Mike Corrierro's also, but I thought the render looked a bit brownish and flat in some places. Perhaps a bit more value separation in the foreground? The background was stellar.

Voted Chuck, mate. I really loved the intensity of the pose, the hair covering his eyes and especially the short but extremely sweet and hilarious description. It was hard picking because there were a lot of excellent entries. Will try to post some c&c later.
