JFA's Sketches, Practice, Finished Pieces and other Musings

Well I finally decided to start a sketch book, mainly for practicing anatomy, figure drawing, drapery and color theory. I am looking to begin a career somewhere in freelance illustration and bring my abilities up to par, build a portfolio and get a website up and running. Ok less typing and more posting now!

good stuff, keep up the studies. throw in some muscle studies while your at it. try to copy the studies line for line, and really think about what your drawing. Anyways, good work!

    Hey man.

Nicely done anatomy/muscle studies. Remember to LEARN from your studies - don't just copy the image in front of you. Make a photocopy of your studies and keep them next to your sketbook so you can refer back to them if need be. Or whatever

With your shading, you seem to "scratch" the shadows in with vertical pencil strokes. You should try crosshatching, or lay your pencil on its side and use the side of the graphite to shade.

Digital stuff - I really like your vibrant colour schemes; really dramatic. here are some minrot problems in the rendering area. For example, the iguana-dragon in your second post. It's purple "hair" looks kindof unfinished and unintentionally 'ragged'. You could benefit weel, too from doing anatomy studies of lizards & other retiles. The rendering part, though, that'll come with lots of practice

Anyway. Good SB goin' on - keep up the good work!

As the pattern gets more intricate and subtle being swept along is no longer enough.

Bunny - thanks for the advice, yea I will study the different bones and the movements as much as I can, I only have a small book on anatomy and will pick up a better one once I can afford it.

Yea my shading has been a bit to sketchy I see what you mean, trying to work on that. But with the anatomy stuff I have mainly been trying to follow the artists drawings as exacting as I can, including the movements of his pencil shading. Thanks a lot thanks for the words of encouragement!

Great stuff, keep up the good work. Your anatomy studies are excellent, especially the last one. The line work is perfect, and the shading compliments it quite well.

Great life drawing studies. The shading is beautiful! I like the creativity and imagination in your other digitally colored pieces. Great stuff!

Here is some more recent work as in 2009 till present lol... Havenít updated in a very long time. I recently had to relocate back to the east coast so no more LAAFA for now ... I am currently studying under Jonathan Hardesty via Classical Art Online, he is one heck of an instructor!

A few studies from a LAAFA uninstructed live model workshop, some digital paintings and a self portrait...
    More to come!
