I guess I should get some more art on here. This is a paint-over I was working on for fun of a Mike Mignola comic.

Haha nice work on that Ben. The cloak is really well done. Are you doing any more of it?

I second that! A demo would be an awesome learning experience for many.
Many questions, but I'll venture one (or two): Do you work off many layers shadow to highest lights all seperated or kinda alla prima mostly one layer?

    Seriously thirsty for knowledge

Nah... I was just goofing around. Hoping by osmosis that I could learn something about drawing comics by painting over comic panels.

Yeah, I'll try to put together some kind of demo at some point.

I work off a lot of layers. No particular system. I switch back and forth between photoshop and Painter on many pieces. I start with a loose drawing in photoshop. Then I take it into painter to establish a color scheme because painter is good at that, the way the colors mix together. From then on the process is kind of arbitrarily putting in details.

I love the way you handle flesh tones. But really, its your compositions that get me. Do you have any tips on composition? The way you navigate us with color and lights and darks are great! I can see your using low value color opposites, (blue/orange and red/green in the girl/ogre portraits) The second one is brilliant. The white window that creates the silhouette of her back is fantastic. I can see what your doing with directing light...so many things working subtlety, where do you start? What kind of things are you thinking to arrive at these decisions?

Lovely sb you have man. Those mignola paintovers are effin' cool. You should do some sequentials of your own. And a tutorial would be great.
    Cheers dude.

    I'm inspired!

Ben I love these!! Your textures and loose painting set the mood. They have a John Singer Sargent feel. You should be in Spectrum man!! The world needs to feel your art love. No I wasn't a hippy in the 60s.

Thanks Fishhead and Brian T. I have some pretty good process stuff but it's all NDA. I can't wait until we're allowed to put some of that stuff up.

smithrc, humble my ass, your drawings rule!

Ive been a fan of your work for a while now, since i first saw your character designs for the suffering ages ago. I like the rough feel to your digi painting where you've left some colour unblended. I dunno if its because stuff is unfinished or you intended it, but it looks really effective imo. Great work, i like the freak pin-up's probably more than i should hehe. Cheers for sharing!

I keep a sketchbook around but all I do is scribble in it anymore. Lately one of my leads has started having concept meetings where we are encouraged to quickly sketch ideas in our sketchbooks. I used to be a lot better but I suck now. Something about working digitally all the time has screwed me up. Hopefully if we keep having these meeting I'll get my pencil skills back.

Here's a few more. I've been trying to train myself as a pin-up artist so there's some girls on here. Sometimes they turn out pretty good. I might keep working on this on with the x's on her boobs. And there's some robot doodles too.
