Lovely work man, You confidence with colour and shape is really refreshing. It makes it all seem very strong and agile, in a painted sense. I love it.

Thanks for posting as always, love the inspiration bump I get here!

    Environment Thumbs

    Tnx all!
Here are some random thumbnails, I do a lot of those messy little things, actually I've the feeling this is what I 'draw' most of the time bun never post because it's too unpresentable. Like personal scribly notes only I can figure out. Oh well I decided embarrass myself a bit and star sharing those, so you can get better idea of how I cook things .(sometimes the truth can be quite ugly)

    Attachment 1146522

At some point I might even dig up my backlog of thumbs and dump here some more.

    John. H. Vanderpoels Studies

Hey thanks Sean, glad you appreciate them, I enjoy playing with composition myself almost above anything else, still have tones to explore and learn about it though. And you're right often tons of detail and shiny surface rendering gets the credit above else, sometimes deservedly not always. I'm of the opinion that everything is in the right balance.
Unfortunately most of the time I cant afford to go out and paint/draw form life and I don't have much of a view form my apartment. I really want to change that this year. As soon as it stops raining all the time.(London you know, winter/spring can be quite wet) I'll start my attempts at some proper plein air.(maybe just sketches at first)

Meanwhile I've been updating myself a bit on the human firure side of things doing studies form the John. H. Vanderpoels wandeful The Human Figure book.(With some charcoal studies from ref that I'll scan/post later). Soaking chapter by chapter without to much skipping this time(first time I do this, see if it's useful)

Those sky studies are awesome!!! Your use of color is almost heart-warming, I've been looking at so many black/white value studies

The anatomy studies are coming along as well - keep pushing those values

    cheers

Your personal work is outstanding! So much great energy in them.

Thanks for posting those thumbs up there, they're pretty easy to read imo. I feel the same way about my thumbs, pretty sure only I could decipher them!

    Robot Got Back

    Tnx all, here's a bot!

Started from a tiny thumbnail, that I kindof liked, but then ended being nothing special so I decided not to spend time polishing to mush, so it's a bit rough. Obviously need to spend more time studying materials and light on various volumes.

And here's a wip video showing some stages in the process.

There something I like in the roughness of that mech. It makes it feel a little more painterly. Because you seem to use pretty opaque colours/strokes it makes it look like sort of real oil painting or something. Where the bright colours sit really strong on the darks. Do you work from dark to light a lot in your process?

Also irrelevant but the brush strokes are the floor are awesome, they actually look just like real paint.
Thanks for posting, looking forward to your life drawings and gestures show us what you got!!

Amazon snake woman and the Centrifuge Outcasts Head Mechanic

PHATandy - thanks for the hints, yeah I've the feeling I'll be experimenting more with figures this year . And about the painterly look, yeah that's something I like to and I've been consciously going towards for some tie, at this point it's just the way things turn out whatever I think or do. I still have tones to learn and evolve in therms of style and technique. One could never have enough experimentation!

Dark_Eyes - Thanks mate you've definitely got 5 from me to!

Here's two sketchy things, one strongly inspired by Conan I watched again couple of months ago, it was nothing as I remember it as a kid but still managed to move something deep inside me. Another influence for this one was my favourite character/class from Diablo 2 the Amazon, hence the red garments and the spear.
And the other one is a pain over an old sketch I did for the [neo]martyr project ages ago, I decided to paint it over recently, but the overall lack of perspective and depth to the portrait finally managed to put me off polishing it more. Nevertheless a good exercise that helped me realise some things that I was lacking and need to study more.
