    Here comes FRANK!

Sorry for the late update! The reason for updating so late was a new 'Tales from the Crypt' story I did for issue #7 beside my work on the Ray Harryhausen mini-series. So the last weeks were 100% comic for me and there was no time left for anything else.

Exquisite Beast: Thank you! I will start with the tutorial this week btw

Dynamike: Thanks! It is really good to know this few sketches I did so far are working.

Flesheater: ... take a look at Frank ... and of course I will show you more of MAYA. Thank you!

mysteryofalbesila: Thank you very much! Great to know you like them.

Tom van der Linden: Thank you! I'm working on getting it even 'cooler'...

cout<mecha: Thank you! I think I will stick with this kinda look for MAYA.

Farin: I knew it!... I should call Uri Geller hehe

Flesheater: Yes I did. I made it semi-finalist and I think that's good with over 1200 entries. Thx!

TheGnoll: Thank you! Good to see you here again. Thx for the kind words.

Cederix: Thank you! I will do my best to sketch more beside work.

Let's start with a quick warmup sketch of Frank Castle (The Punisher):

hey man sorry for not dropping by more often...glad to see you updating

really digging the punisher, although you might want to watch out on the rendering in terms of your grays...atm its sorta hard to tell what the actual fabric colours are in the pants (the white shirt is more obvious), its like you've taken light and shade into account but neglected value somewhat. awesome pose and i love what you did with the blood at the back though !

    keep it up man!

    Here comes MAYA

corza334: Thx! Great you like my stuff.

paperX: Thx for you visit and your comment about the last post. The Punisher was a really quick one I did as a warmup sketch. Originally I had not planned to add greys so I just rushed them in to make him less flat looking.

Here is a new image of MAYA... wohoo... two updates on one day

    MAYA - promo art

Dynamike: Lol! I think I can arrange a date with Maya... not sure if you are interested after todays post... hehe

cout<mecha: Thx man! I was busy with sequentials the last weeks. Now I have some time before diving into the next issues of the Ray Harryhausen books.

Here is a final image of the main character to my comic 'MAYA' regarding the style I will use for the books.

My plan is to bring it out in B&W. What do you think? Would you buy a B&W comic?

If the shown style is the same in your final comic I will definitely buy the books! Even without color

    Keep it up!

I am still interested in a date... could be fun with all the firepower

I really like the black and white version and would give you 5 stars... but I've already gave you five before

All Covers for the MADDRAX Spin-Off

Flesheater: Thx. I still don't know if it will be black&white or color because of the feedback I've got so far. I think I will do it in color with a style which works in black & white only too.

Dynamike: Thank you! And thank you for the stars ... maybe some other visitors get a little inspiration and give me 5 too (hint hint!)

Here is an overview of all the covers I did for Bastei's "Das Volk der Tiefe" novels, the spin-off from the MADDRAX novels.

I will sell some signed issues on ebay soon (in Germany).

I would prefer colors... so if you still think about it... DO color!

thanks for that comment man..great work here.
like how you can do the comic bookish style and then push towards a level of realism as well..those covers are dope..you use references for things like that? and what are those deadlines like?

    New Interview online

I did a new in-depth interview for Jazmaonline.com a few weeks ago and it is now online here:

Click to read my online interview at Jazmaonline.com!

Flesheater: COLOR it is! Thank you!

DeKal: Thank you very much for your comment! Regarding your questions: Most covers from above are done without any reference. For some areas and faces I used ref like for the human face where the comet hits earth. The deadlines were tight for this covers and the pulp look was something the publisher wanted. Thx again!

Here is a colored sketch of 'The Flash'. My version of "The fastest man alive"... aehm... I mean "dead"!
It was done for a thread in the creative forum over at http://www.millarworld.tv
You can check out the thread with the 'Black Lantern' images here:

    Tales from the Crypt

Chris Noeth: Thank you Chris for this glorious last post!

Hey... just kidding. But I had to help myself here because no one is writing any comments about my last stuff hehe

I think I haven't shown my original cover art for the Tales from the Crypt book here before... so here it is:

    From 2D to 3D

Here is a big version of my GameStar/dev 2d concept I have posted some weeks ago. I repost this big version because it is followed by the 3d model of this concept artwork.

The whole workshop will be out soon in 'GameStar/dev', the German game developer magazine.

And the sequentials you can see are from my first story "Extra Life" I did for 'Tales from the Crypt' #4. It was written by Neil Kleid.

I'm looking forward to your new work.

Seeing the 'tentacles' on your website logo I wonder if there will be new art from your Ray Harryhausen story soon!?

Looks like lots of new artwork this time around. I enjoyed the sequentials story pages. Nice clear narrative and progression. The panels are invisible! Well done.

Your panels are really well done. I like that concept + 3d render a few posts up, too. I rarely get to see the before and after of concept work, since I have no 3d skills. Very cool.

So with the experiences you've had with 3D and coming from a BG in 2D how do you feel about the potential of 3D vs the uniqueness of 2D in your work? Where do you see yourself going with the both of these in terms of collaboration of both skills. Do you feel one is faster or gives better results, more fun ect. Be honest!

New Comic Pages from Ray Harryhausen book...

    I'm a lucky bastard!
I'm working with Sven Strangmeyer, one of the best colorists I know, on the Bluewater miniseries "Ray Harryhausen Presents: It Came From Beneath The Sea... Again!"!
Below you can see two pages from issue 1, the result of the fantastic collaboration!

Dynamike: Your wish is my command...
    Flesheater: Thx man!
Sebastianrenaissance: Thank you! I already have visited your thread. Keep it up!
cout<mecha: Thx! I appreciate it! I wonder what you think about the new pages with colors from Sven!? Regarding your question: More fun I have with 2D, but 3D is great to build things in 100% right perspective. It really depends on what you want to achieve with your work or if you are creating graphics for a game etc. ... but I will always prefere 2D before 3D ... and I don't think you can build good 3D models without a good knowledge of 2D art.
sourgasm: Thank you very much! I appreciate your comment!

So here they are... NEW pages from the Ray Harryhausen book. A collaboration with the new official colorist 'Sven Strangmeyer' who will color the whole miniseries:

Let me know what you think.

The first page really holds my attention, although it is difficult to figure out what is going on sequentially. It is vibrant and very easy on the eyes. I think you are oversimplifying your imagery, relying to much on the awsome coloring job that's been done.

Of course you can do detailed imagery, but better angles of more simple imagery seems to be impairing the enjoyment of the flow of the story. You have otherwise done an excellent job of creating FX and texture as always.

Perhaps my question of 2D vs 3D is a timely one as it seems easy for most people to establish effects/details using 3D if given access. With that said I think you have a good start with your skills in this area. I'll be looking foward to something you've put together in the near future!

    Keep it going!

    Tales from the Crypt #7

This week my new story ‘Moonlight Sonata’ will be out in ‘Tales from the Crypt’ issue #7 ... and I have high hopes you all will buy this issue

The story is written by famous writers John and Joe R. Lansdale (Bubba Ho-Tep, Masters of Horror, Bubba Nosferatu and the Curse of the She-Vampires, Conan, Pigeons from Hell, Fantastic Four,...) and shows the tale of mugger Roscoe Little who believes he’s hit the jackpot, when his victim’s keys open up the front door to a millionaire’s townhouse… but things change when Roscoe discovers something in the basement.

    New Workshop article out soon!

Sorry for not updating my sketchbook for so long!

The reason for not updating is easy: Too much work and everything is Top Secret for now... so I can't show anything yet... not even sketches.

cout<mecha: Thanks for your detailed feedback. Point taken. I will work on it .

Dynamike: Thx Mike. You have seen nothing yet... the new colored pages are awesome! And regarding the publishing I think an exact date will be out in a few weeks.

Sebastianrenaissance: Thank you! Good to hear you have convinced your parents! Good luck for your artistic future!

Flesheater: Thx Flesheater. I'm working on it ... good things take time ... hehehe ... and regarding the bee cover: I have seen it too. Nice one. Good it came out after my sketch so no one can say I copied... hehe

legionare: Thx man! I hope you also buy books without green pages because my new Tales from the Crypt work is out since last week in issue #7...

Here is a new 3D image with the mapping for the house I did for the German game developer magazine 'GameStar/dev'. The workshop how the mapping is done will be out soon to the 'Game Convention 2008'. The title of the magazine will change to 'Making Games' btw.

    Attachment 431370

Oh man... I'm working on such cool things and can't talk about it... too bad. But the time will come!

Best wishes to all of you!
