Thread: Noldorin's Sketchbook
October 24th, 2006 #1
Ive been coming to these forums for a while now.. a year or so at least. Anyway I have never posted anything here before because after seeing what everyone else can do I get scared off =P. But i suppose I cant keep hiding forever especially if i want work doing this sort of thing so here is some of my stuff :/ (if i can get the images to display XD )
Im trying to teach myself painting and trying to improve my drawing skills so any comments/crits/tips would be most appreciated.
This one was inspired by the awsome work by openanewworld
Borrowed the colour scheme from a picture i found.. forget who painted it
Trying to come up with a character to model.. then i realised the hair looked like dbz and gave up on it :P
Another character design for a 3d model
This was the concept for my 3d entry into the Blizz Art contest for 2006, he's meant to be azmodan the lord of sin XD
This might be a lil big but here was the final composition
This one is from earlier in the year but i still kinda liked it.. drew it after watching the hellgate london cinematic about 12 times
Well thats all I think is worth showing right now.. I know there are anatomy issues, and problems with character balance and stuff.

Awesome stuff here, you were scared to post...

Welcome to CA btw
I want more! keep updating...
"No, on second thought, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place."

Great work! The toothy fairy rocks and that model kicks azz. What progrom did you use to do your modeling? As far as the toothy fairy your line useage was great and the overall pic has a great texture to it. Keep posting!

Not a huge update but I came up with this character today.. Going to redraw it tomorrow properly :p
Sanest- No I wasnt intending on colouring it XD
Silvestri99- I used 3dsmax 8 to model and the textures were done in photoshop
And here is the character, I will most likely be modelling this, but the costume is going to change for sure
This is a side view of the same character.. well .. its meant to be at any rate, was just playing around in ps
And this is a closeup of an eye I attempted to paint.. like.. 6 months ago i think
And thats all for now

i like the first one very much ( the tooth fairy)!!
The others have a few anatomy issues, but that is just practice!
Keep posting man!!

NOW THAT IS ATOOTH FAIRY!!! I also like the pencil sketch at the start of your last post, pretty girl.
You gotta work on your coloring, colors are generally flat. I really shouldn't talk because I suck just as bad! Keep practicing mate, improvment will come, you definitely have talent.

Thanks for the comments all =D
I've been trying to draw faces for the last couple of days, here are some of the more successful ones. Still cant draw them decently without reference.. I think im becoming too dependant on ref for drawing =O
pg3 which is actually part of page 1 that didnt fit on the scanner :/
I also had some that i sketched in photoshop but its now 4am so Ill post them tomorrow with some more stuff. And as always, brutally honest crits are most welcome :P

I did some serious thinking and have finally come up with the next character for my showreel. The costume still needs a bit more refining but I kinda like the face. Keeping in mind this is going to be a low poly character... like 5000 or 6000 polys. I also did some hand studies which arent as interesting =p
original pencil sketch
digital version of the face and another idea for the complete costume
and the hands
Any comments/crits/suggestions about the character would be greatly appreciated O_o

I love this stuff. Like many people have said you cannot seriously have been scared to post. This is awsome your hand studies are nice and clean plus all those character designs were inspiring. I was beginning to feel a bit uninspired but seeing this has put plenty of ideas back into my head. I am definately subscribing to this thread

You can't actually be srious about being scared to post. After seeing this i'm shitting myself about my first post. If everyone else is this good, i think i'll go find another forum and then build my way up to this one.
Anywho those are awesom. i especially like the one with the scyle like thing!

Hello again, ive got a few of the designs for my 3d character ill be starting tomorrow. Please ignore the fuzzy hair on the greyscale, it didnt turn out how i wanted it but i was sick of the picture by then, the new pencil sketch is how the hair will look XD
here is the first greyscale
another version of the face
And a view from behind
Im really going to focus on getting the face absolutely perfect, and spend a week or more on texturing alone. O and I just found out my Blizzard entry made it into the Honorable mentions :D
And i know the legs on the greyscale are really long.. but i thought it looked worse with normal sized legs.. =/

Good work dude, really like the concepts. my favorites are the tooth fairy and the drawing for azmodan, and the first drawing of the sythe girl looks like she would fit in masters of the universe. i dig it. a crit though, the greyscale looks kinda flat. good practice for you to draw from ref but dont stop with a line drawing, fill it in. shade that stuff. even just quick shading, light side/dark side kinda stuff. keep it up looks great.
November 24th, 2006 #22
Back again, Ive started modelling the character so i wont be sketching as much till its done. Here is a sketch of Davy Jones XD
wompley- yea I need to start shading, but I usually draw with the intention of colouring it later, but more often than not i dont get around to it. But I need to practise tone so I'll keep that in mind.
I want to do a full painting of Davy Jones on his ship, although i havent ever painted a full scene and all, but im gonna start working on it inbetween modelling
November 24th, 2006 #23
Davy jones rocks. I like the imagination in here. Focus a little more on proportion in your faces/characters. Also, often when you shade things they start looking flat, make sure to think in 3d shapes. Bridgeman could help with that. Keep up the good work, i'd love to see a finished pirate peice.

Hello again, Ive managed to struggle and free myself from wow for good and Im getting more drawing and stuff done allready :D
Ok first is another failed attempt at painting (from photo ref)
The line drawing
I started to draw up a christmas card but lost interest in it quick enough, although I thought the face didnt turn out too badly.
And 3 of today's sketches
I need to figure out some new brush settings for sketching, the lines are so messy up close >_<
And finally here are some of the screenshots of my model, I'm currently working on the textures but I'm not that great at it so its taking a long time. o_ O

Hey, great life studies and the concepts are great!
I like Azmodan although it looks to me as if hes standing too upright to have a tail like that, looks like he'd fall backwards, but that might just be me
February 15th, 2007 #29
Another attempt at painting :/
February 15th, 2007 #30
That last one is a pretty damn good painting from screncap.
Analyzing screencaps is a good way to figure composition and lighting.
You're on the right track with your sketches too, some of them are lankier than what is proportional, try and use the scale tool to find a balance.
Other than that keep at it.
