    Pixar concept art

Anyone know of any sites that feature concept artists by one of the Pixar production designers? In particular, I'm interested in the art of Harley Jessup and Ralph Eggleston.

    Thanks.

I just read through Baker's blog. Some great pictures and some very informative posts as well!

Anyone know what it takes to become a production designer? Or exactly what it entails?

Thanks. I've been a big James Baker fan for some time! I've got the "art of" books. I was just wondering if there might be more artwork online. I found a number of interviews of Ralph Eggleston which are great.

In regards to your question about becoming a production designer, a book that's been recommended is "By Design: Interviews with Film Production Designers," by Vincent LoBrutto. It's highly recommended as one of the key books on the subject.

There's a set of 100 postcards that you can find which are all Pixar art - there are a lot of Eggleston's pastels in there, as well as drawings from the various stages of development...

Here are some of the postcards I just scanned. It's a great set of postcards... aside from that, I think you can probably find gobs and gobs of Eggleston paintings in The Art of Finding Nemo... I think he's got some lighting studies in art of CARS, too.

While not production designers, you can't afford not to check out work by Ronnie Del Carmen and Enrico Casarosa. http://www.ronniedelcarmen.com/ http://www.enricocasarosa.com/

MikeC - That may be correct, but thats not always the case in animation. From my experience, inital look/stylization/etc is established by a small team of visual development artists. Usually there is a rough script/boards and then there is exploration of the script and sometimes new ideas that are pitched to the directors. The production designer usually ends up being someone that has more of an administrative/managerial role and oversees multiple departments and follows the art work through the various departments- modeling, surfacing, lighting, etc. Initially they are able to do more artwork, but as additional departments become involved, they do less and less.

I love the George Hull gallery, especially the 'colour palette time line' page. It's so clever.

Lightbulb New site - The Art of Pixar

Just thought I'd add to this thread, since I just created a new site on this subject- it's all about the artwork from Pixar artists and production designers.

It's not exhaustive by any means, since I don't want to scan the art books or infringe too many copyrights, but I'm trying to get a bit of a collection together.

    It's at http://www.theartofpixar.com.

Hope you find it useful, and inspiring!

And if you come across artwork that's not in the site, let me know!

    Cheers,

    Neal

Some concept stuff from a Pixar film in the works called Up. I'm really looking forward to this one.

And of course, with the birth of the artist came the inevitable afterbirth - the critic.
