    Pixel8's Sketchbook

Hi guys! I'm not an art student, nor do I play one on TV. I'm currently hanging out with the guys in the Daily Sketch Group to help me improve. I think it's helping. I'm starting to feel more confident as I sit and make my little scrawls.

Here are my DSGs so far (a little out of order!)

DSG 1123: Sci-Fi: BAD*** RUBBER-SUITED TECHNOCRAT HAS RECESSED BODY NOOKS FOR WEAPONRY

DSG 1127: Fantasy: RIDICULOUS SIGN POST BAFFLES BAND OF TRAVELLERS

DSG 1129: Sci-Fantasy: SPACESUITED WARRIOR BATTLES LARGE BLACK CRAB-LIKE CREATURES (Yes, I screwed up and did spider-like)

DSG 1126: Fantasy: THE HAIRY OFFER WHITISH PIECES OF THE HAIRLESS TO THE EATING GOD

DSG 1133: Seasonal Fantasy: GIANT, TREE-LIKE BEAST SHEDS ITS LEAVES IN THE AUTUMN

DSG 1134: Sci-Fi: FLYING MICRO BOT THAT RESEMBLES INSECT IS NEAR EVERYDAY OBJECT

DSG 1135: Sci-Fantasy Character: GIZMO GIRL

DSG 1136: Sci-Fantasy: ORGANIC RIDER IS ASTRIDE THE REARING CYBER HORSE

DSG 1137: Alien: VAGUELY CRAB-LIKE, IT FLOATS THROUGH AIR W/ INFLATING HEAD-BLADDER

And....that brings us up to date! Visit the DSG here

    Mini-Dumpage

Here are a few pages from my sketchbook to get started. I think they are roughly in chronological order.

    Suggesting Paper

I'd love to suggest some paper to you: Hammermill Color Copier Paper, 70# text weight. That's a very, very smooth sheet for color copiers. I buy it from Expedx, a retailer that supplies print shops like Kinko's and such, but they sell it at Sam's Club and other general retailers. I bet Office Depot has it.

Anyway, draws smooth, erases clean. Lots of fun to draw on.

    Pixel8's Sketchbook

For the life of me, I don't know what retailers are thinking at places like Wal-Mart where they sell these sketch books with paper so rough that it's akin to drawing on sandpaper. Um... /rant.

    Waddddddup CATL sketchgroup homie???

wELCOME TO THE Sketchbook section! Good looking start you've got going here too—> these DSGs are looking pretty good...3D renderings in ONE day? impressive! what software are you using to create these? maya? 3ds max? Personally i'm just beginning to dabble in the 3d stuff, so i'ts google sketch up for me until i get something better. :-/

Ah yes, "Don't hurt em' " Hammermill... hehehe...

You are drawing on what we used to call "LZ" back in my nefarious pop-copy days. This paper does indeed have a nice, smooth coated finish, and takes to some dry media very well. 70lb is more or less standard in the sketchbooks these days too. It's a swanky, swanky nice smooth finish, and as you're demonstrating pretty well

+++ and now, a special message about the art +++

These are looking good, and i've got to say that i really like the way you are pushing the values, even in the quick studies. Good to see another georgia person rocking the DSG too, in fact, that was where i got my start out on this site a few years ago ... With any luck i think you'll get better feedback here in the sketchbook section, though that can be hit or miss at times. really, sometimes i think it's all about when you post your updates more than anything else. Sometimes no hits/comments, sometimes you'll get 3 or more responses, sometimes you hit the response lottery O.o . it's weird like that; gotta love the randomness, eh?

the dsg 1126 piece, of all of them, seems to be the strongest. I really like the atmosphere and the subtle colors you are employing. In fact, it reminds me a lot of a piece that CATL sketchgroup's very own retep was working on a little while back over in his book.

general crits: hmmm... with the pencil stuff, maybe try to work a little bit cleaner, and also perhaps try and work up your pages of random sketches up into fuller rendered compositions. If you haven't seen wes burt's delightfully penciled pages maybe check those out for some properly mind-blowing inspiration.

all the best duder...will hopefully see ya tomorrow night at the CATL mini!

(also, i subscribed to your thread, so i'll be checking up on ya. DON'T let your thread die, eh? i'm being sirius satellite radio)

Thanks for being the first to check in, Guggs!

The 3-D stuff is done in (angelic music) Blender and yes, I did them in a few hours for the most part...very tiring. That's why I jumped back on the DSG: to push my 3D by a killer challenge like doing DSG with it!

But I had so much fun with the artists there, and they all encouraged me to carry on with pencil work to get a foundation. I agreed and have been working with my pencils, and loving it.

It will help in the long run, I'm sure. I'll get there! (Note to self: go "borrow" some more Hammermill for the CATL meeting.)

    3D Hand (in progress)

OK OK! Thanks for the kick, Guggs.

Here's a 3-D hand in progress. Inspired by Take2's rendering.

Here's my progress so far, in 3 stages:

    Bust, WIP

Working on a 3D self-portrait. Whether it ends up looking like me or not is up for grabs. I'm just glad it's looking like a person!

    Newer digital sketches

Just started using a borrowed Wacom Intuos 3 Tablet. Guess I oughta sketch every now and again, huh?

I hope there is a little progress here, partly due to getting the hang of the tablet, partly due to reading others' sketchbooks.

Updates to my sketchbook. Working with the Wacom tablet.

    Pixel8's Sketchbook

Working on some skin folds here. Did not get to finish, but I'm not going to labor over quick practice sketches.

    DSG 1391: multi-limbed, barrel-chested, snarling abomination.

    Pixel8's Sketchbook

If I had wanted to do better, I would have had a clearer idea of where I was going before I started. I also needed to keep getting down to smaller pen sizes and detailing it in.
