Exclamation burst strength GO! - Arekkusu's SB updated

Hi, nice to meet you all, I have been lurking here for awhile, mabe a year or more, well until the other day when i fially built up the courage to sign-up and start a sketchbook. Im glad to be here now and look forward to learning lots! I have great respect for the people here and I look forward to becoming apart of this awesome community.

Below I have attached some sketches from the past year, there are alot more but I didnt know whether it was appropiate or not. The older sketches are on the yellowish paper (there not bleeched from the sun lol)

Feel free to Comment and Critique.

    Have an awesome day.

The one of the dolphin is a still life drawing of a wooden like marble sculpture my sister has. Sorry if they are abit random im still trying to get the hang of this attachment manager lol.

Really nice set of studies to start everything out. I particularly enjoy the hands and feet sudies. Something all of us could use more of (well at least me). Do you attend life drawing sessions? If not they are a great place to build skill...cheers!

Nice work to start; i like the hand and feet studies. The faces need the most work, but i see you're working on it.

Cool start. Particularly liked the eye studies - liked the way you showed the main tones without getting caught too much in the detail. Made them look way better than my own attempts.

I'm checking out your book because I thought your quote/signature or whatever it's called was funny, about God being a glorified genie. Your doing good with all these studies, it looks like you're considering their purpose while doing them. Your block forms could be clearer, make the lines straighter and the vertexes clearer. At the vertexes you tend to miss the point of intersection, or pet the the line a little or use multiple lines which ruins the sense of solidity/bulk. Use a ruler to train yourself to understand their character, also not worrying to much about overshooting the mark a little and letting the lines cross like a t helps a little.

Hey dude! Thanks for the comment in my SB. Going to try it ASAP.

Cool SP. Only advice I can offer is something I only got yesterday from Solomon J. Solomon (here: http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu...d%20With%20It). It's to look for the lightest and darkest passages in your drawing. Slowly squint your eyes. First thing to turn black is your darkest passage, keep on squinting your eyes tighter, until there is only one bright light - your lightest passage. By keeping the relationship between darkest and lightest, you'll make your work look much more 3D.

Only thing it doesn't work on is when you're drawing your eyes

    hey Arekkusu!
i think the line of your work is hard.so your drawing seems to a little ankylosis .especially the foregoing work.but i should say i like the last one,the structure of head is nicety.keep it up.
    it just my own opinion~~~

Yo guys, posting abit later than I meant to, been feeling abit fried today, notsure why though. Its also the reason I havent got much done today, but I tried and I guess thats what is important.

term8or:Yo man no worrys, im gunna add you to my favs if I already havent . Thanks for the tip on the light and dark passages, gunna have to try it tomorrow, I've got a link that kinda covers the same thing on 3d forms, I'll post it in your sketch book in a sec .

Haes:Yo man thanks for the crit and comment, your opinion is valued, I think it might be the pencil im using, i'll try a softer one, like a hb mabe?. But yeh I gotta try to loosen up abit as well i think lol. Thanks again man.

Can any one suggest any good books on figure drawing or perspective, as I think those are some of my many weaknesses.

Oh and tomorrow im gunna try and do a full a4 page of basic head structure, then positions and so on, over the following few weeks, as I have never done a drawing session like that. Hope that makes senses.

Take it easy and catch you tomorrow hopefully buds.

Update: Oh and I added in a few of my old anatomy sketchs (not that old really, mabe 5-6 months mabe more), they're on the yellowish paper there are more like it, just not finished like these.

    Yo guys,

term8or: Yo man, thanks , Nah i just did them from this site, havent got ahold of any loomis books yet. -http://www.anticz.com/heads.htm thats the one.

Banshax:Yo man thanks for the nice comments! i'll keep trying my best dude.

Ryan DeMita:yeh man deffinately, actually most of my studies are from books, this past year or so anyways, but I see what ya-saying, alittle bit of everything cant hurt right. As for the updates, afraid I might have to dissapoint you on this occasion man.

So Updates........ not exactly, you see my freaking macbook Harddrive died the other night, and there was nothing I could do to fix it, so I had to send it off to apple...joy to say the least. Anyways my macbook was the only system in my house that I could resize my sketchbook scans on so until it comes back in about 8-10 days or so, I cant update

Sorry guys, anyways I'll keep on drawing and have some stuff to post next week hopefully.

    Have a nice day.

that's some seriously nice line work/sketches!

i'm envious cause sketching like that just makes me tired, but i know i need to practice it more.

try to work in some color, you can do a lot just by mixing in a red or blue primsa color pencil in with sketches if you don't want to dive into paints or digital yet.

also, vary up your subject w/some objects, landscapes, and framed compositions, and keep going!

Hey man, thanks for the comments. Looked through your sketchbook. Nice stuff man. Good to see you are doing studies, and looking to some of the modern day master illustrators (loomis) hehe. Keep drawing man thats all I can say right now. You're studies are looking good. Keep growing, keep learing. You should start drawing more from life, not just studies from a book. Books are "idealizations" of people. At the coffee shop draw stuff, at the park, draw the park. Always have your book! and if you are already doign that, then post it! lol. And I use prismacolor for my stuff done in blue to answer yourquestion. I sometimes mess with colorase pencils to, and i usually use the blue or red one. The colorase ones are really waxy though, but they do erase to an extent. I prefer the prisma color though.

    Warrior Style

The first rule of Warrior Style is, You do not stop drawing.
The second rule of Warrior Style is, You DO NOT stop drawing.

    Updated Dec 22nd. Still fighting.

Hey guys, sorry for the disapearing act, I had to go away to cornwall (UK), then things kinda broke after that...On my way back up though so its all good . But drawing the past few weeks hasnt been very productive cause of this...So hopefully i can get back on track. Oh and I'm gunna try, (try being the operative word) to use charcoal to do studys with as well, hopefully the attempts will be for-filling and beneficial. That and Im gunna do more digital studys to vary my sessions up abit.

notspecialist: Thanks man, kind words. Those older studys took along time lol. But thats probally cause I made so many mistakes and kept having to go back over them. As for the varied studys and working in color, your absolutely right dude. Hopefully I can get ahold of some of those Pencils and stuff after ..or for... Xmas..

Thanks again man for stopping by my sketchbook, for the kind words and the good ideas!

TGping: Thanks man!, I really have to work on facial structure and the like, I have next to no confidence when drawing faces lol. Gunna stop by your SB later on today man, Looking forward to it! Transformers PWN! lol

vances22: Thanks dude, more life drawings to come! Im gunna give the coffee shop thing ago as well once I get my confidence back up abit, its kinda lacking at the moment. You can probally tell from the drawings I will or have posted below lol. And I will start taking my sketchbook around with me, sounds like an awesome idea. Now if I could just find away of carrying it without using a bag or my arms ??? lol.

Thanks again for the kind words man, and for stopping by my SB.

Oh and that Warrior Style in your signiture looks interesting...

2000YearsOldMan:Cheers dude! Ahh man the games rock! well at least some of them. Just give them a little while and you can get totally absorbed. Thanks for dropping by man

term8or: Hey man! I got an Update for ya lol! Hope your well man. Will top by your SB tomorrow.

Anyway im gunna go catch some
Hope you all have a nice xmas or other celebration based event, and for those that dont celebrate xmas and or any event hope you have a nice week lol. Oh and sorry for the long post!

Now finally for the update..Lower down images are more recent. -->

You're improving... every now and again you produce a sketch on "the next level" .... just promise me one thing. No more writing "I suck" or "this drawing sucks" anywhere on your sketchbook.

Thanks for the comments. It's often very hard to see your own progress. Somedays you're worse, sometimes you're better, and it's hard to see the trends.

    Two things...

    1. If you check out the creative illustrations book by Loomis I suggested, and read the bit about drawing objects in squares and rectangles, you'll understand a little more about how 2000YearsOldMan's excellent suggestion fits into drawing a skull better

    2. Here's a quote from someone who has twenty years experience at drawing... and whose work I respect very much... about those little "Argh" days:

It's as if, what you learn has to work it's way into your brain .While this is happening ,the process interupts your normal level of ability(what ever that is ).
Students rarely realize this and most instructors don't/can't enlighten the students. The students become intimidated by this normal process and either stop("I have no talent") or attain a level and stay there, clinging to "what is tried and tested" .They fear discouragment or possibly looking foolish etc.If you see someone who draws well, do some crap, your witnessing them learning something new.
... insidentally, really like the recent studies
