    Twon's Digital Sketchbook (updated Oct 31st 2006)

Here are some of my current Painter sketches on my journey to be free of the scanner. I haven't quite fiqured out what my style should be but I like to keep things loose. I hope to show some progress in this thread that I can look back on and get some feedback.

hey man, welcome to the sketchbook section! WOOT!

like i mentioned before in the doo thread, try to use less thin black scribbles, cause they detract from the piece and being able to read what's going on. the girl with the bookbag pic is MUUUUUUUCH better, cause its not cluttered by so many other lines. you let the shading and the colors do the talking so much more in this one. parts of the samus piece look nice with the black, and parts of it just look messy. the trick is to learn where it would add and where it's just not necessary at all, and that just comes with more drawing. but yeah, try drawing with as little of it as possible for now, and see how your work comes out. good luck with the metroid comic, and remember this important thing...samus's gun is always on her right hand. cheers.

Thx, for taking the time to critique my sketchbook. I noticed that the gun was on Samus's wrong arm days after I drew it. I hear what you are saying about the lines also. I'm trying to go in that direction currently, there are so many possiblities with Painter that I'm kind of overwhelmed. Like if something doesn't look right, I wonder is it the medium clashing with my style, my hand, or just an adjustment that can be made in the Options menu.

just keep experimenting man, hopefully youll eventually find something you like and are comfortable with. i try to do like, a warmup piece before i do any digital, just to get flowin and also to experiment with new brushes in painter. maybe try that out, youll find out new things you can do with the brushes. good luck man. the last samus looks really good, she just needs an elbow on her gun arm. these are just roughs though, right? or is this what the final comic will look like? take care.

Yeah, these are just roughs, I'm trying to get familiar with Painter and the subject matter at the same time. I've got a lot of sketching to do.

    hey twon,
sorry i havent been around in a while; i havent been on ca.org in a while, so im kinda getting back on track and making my rounds. i really like the first phendrana pic; youre using less black (or at least hiding it) and its looking a ton better already! keep doing tons of sketches. sheegoth looks ok, but samus' torso/waist seems like it could be a little bigger. looks like it would be a little hard to breathe. keep it up man; g'luck.
