Hey guys. i have just been offered a job to do character design for a new sci-fi game. I was asked what my rates are. I do not know how to respond. If this was in the world of comic books, I could give an exact answer, but since this is gaming, I don't want to sell myself too short or vice-versa make them run in fear of my outlandish price. They want a series of drawings to show the characters. What is a good standard rate? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

anyone? anyone? bueller? bueller?
it is going to have a range. the easiest way to do it is figure out how much you want per hour and then add in another 30 percent for the costs of doing freelance. It will also depend on the budget of the project. Concept guys range from 20 bucks an hour to a couple thousand bucks a day depending on who it is. Obviously Mullins or Syd Mead will get a better rate than someone not as experienced or proven.

thanks Jason, That helps a ton.... You are da man!
Ah yes Justin, that would be nice, but sadly i am a lot closer to the other end of the spectrum when it comes to my rate.
What are they asking for .... Each character? Pose wise... front, profile, back, angle.... head shots too... What are they asking on a single character sheet? Just a pencil scketch? Ink? Color?
I am getting paid 60 dallars just for pencil scetched characters... Profile, Front, Back and an angle shot. And even at that 60$ is at a lower rate then usual... But this is an indie game... so I had to look at their over all budget

They want tight pencil and ink drawings of 4 different characters. It is rather big budget. Its a sci-fi based game.

you shouldn't tell us what kind a game it is. NDA and confidentiality issues. You should edit your last post.
btw... cool art on your website. good luck.
