    IDW 201 – Zombie Repellant

    Winner: themonet

Description: Zombies are a fact of life at this point. The average walking dead is merely a nuisance, however the odd one can retain a bit of spunk. To keep safety in hand, carry zombie repellant! Snappily packaged and easy to use, this substance will give you peace of mind. Your task is to envision a form for this repellant (be it pellets, liquid, projectiles or other) keeping in mind that this is an item meant to be carried about all day in a purse or back pocket. Once you have decided this, you need to design the repellant dispenser- keeping the "snappy" packaging in mind. Whether this refers the design of the repellant dispenser or creative labelling is up to you.

IDW 202 – Methane Ice Miner

    Winner: SnailsPace

Description: Methane ice, also known as fire ice, or more scientifically as methane clathrate, is a material which is being explored as a large scale source of natural gas. However, this material does not occur only on Earth. It may occur in any situation with low temperatures, water and methane (yes, this means space). As such, you are tasked with creating a methane ice miner. Because of the generally remote and inhospitable areas in which this substance occurs, this with have to be a robot of some sort. When designing, be clear as to what environment this ice is found and is being mined from. Adjust the design to meet the potential requirements of traveling to the mining site, whether that site is vacuum, terrestrial, or aquatic, and how the ice is either processed or returned to a processing plant.

IDW 204 – Ominous Wind Up Children’s toy

    Winner: R3U5

Description: This toy should relate to the average toy in the same manner a Disney fairytale does to a Brothers Grimm story. The toy does not have to be overtly evil, though you are free to chose that route if you wish. Also note that this week the emphasis isn't necessarily on designing something new (though that certainly is an option), but designing in such a way that the proportions, colours, movements etc. may seem "off" or sinister.

Some existing common windup toys are things such as jack-in-the-boxes, dancing trinket boxes, wind up toy cars whether by reverse wheel windup or key etc.

    IDW 209 – Shmeat Maker

    Winner: No poll

Description:According to scientists, shmeat (otherwise known as lab grown meat) is just around the corner. If this is the case, why bother going to the grocery store when you can produce your own! None of the emotional attachment, dirt or stink of a real animal, but all of the fresh meaty goodness.

Some things to note: your design should reflect the styles of the near future- say 10 years from now. What scale of production is up to you. You should also note that the shmeat wouldn't just be grown and sit about- it needs to be "exercised" in order to gain the texture people are used to.

IDW 210 – The Pipes of the Pied Piper

    Winner: Sony

Description: I am sure most of you are familiar with the tale of the Pied Piper. If not, go find a copy, or if you are feeling particularly lazy, check out the link below. To summarize, there was a rat infestation in Hamelin. The villagers hired a man who claimed to be able to get rid of all of them for a price. He did as bid, however he was not paid in full. For revenge, he lured the children of the town away and drowned them in a river (or in other versions they were returned them after he was paid more, but let's stick to the first version for now).

To lure both the rats and children, he used a set of musical pipes. There is speculation as to whether the story is a metaphor for plague or children's crusades which may or may not be the case. However I am sure we can all agree that pipes that can both lure children and rats away must be magical. Your task is to design these magical pipes. Keep in mind their rather morbid purpose while designing. All styles and times are allowed.

    IDW 218 – Merfolk Colony

    Winner: No Poll

Description: We have a special crossover and partner edition of IDW and EOW this week. There are a few things that are a bit different this time round- this will be a 2 person partner round. Each team must submit to both IDW and EOW.

Merfolk Colony: As an advanced underwater culture, they have created many intriguing items to help them in their day to day lives, and to help them understand our world. Your task is to show 2 of any of the following technologies:

    A) Earthnet Research Station- a mer and human joint floating research vessel/platform/station/pod. This was created to help bridge the gap of knowledge between the terrestrial world and the aquatic, as well as taking advantage that multiple viewpoints can give to other fields of research.

    B) Farm Drone- Crops such as seaweeds and fish are important underwater crops. Huge areas of kelp forests and spawning corrals exist around the world and are tended by agricultural drones.

    C) Underwater Ambulance- A fast and stable carrier which transports the injured to a medical care facility.

    D) Tide Power Generator- The never ending movement of water as caused by the Moon is a completely renewable and environmentally safe power safe that is accessible everywhere. These generators come in a variety of sizes for different purposes.

    E) Land Prosthesis- A vehicle for the Mer body that allows brief visits on land primarily in order to deal with terrestrial folk. These are key for trade and diplomatic visits, though that by no means is the limit of their use.

Please note again that this is a 2 person partner round! Each team must submit to both IDW and EOW. Teams submitting to only one or the other will not be taken to poll. As such, the names of both partners must be on the final entries even if only one partner worked on that specific image.

IDW 224 – Biomech Dog Team and Sled

    Winner: Smileface

Description: Your task this week is to design a team of Biomech dogs and the sled for their "musher" or driver.

I just recently returned from living in the Yukon (next to Alaska, but in Canada) for a bit, and one of the things I'm very sad for is that I missed Yukon Quest- the second longest dog sled race in the world at 1,016 miles long, and is often considered the toughest as it goes over mountains and through -60C temperatures. The entire race takes 10-20 days. It follows the track of the Klondike gold rush and historical mail route. For this week, imagine that it is some point in the future and your biomech dog team and sled are either:
    a) competitors in a future Yukon Quest race, or...
    b) post world wide disaster, people have reverted to old techniques of travel and news carrying (ie post equivalent) in an "updated" manner

Description: "The Gasman has no face, the gasman has no fear…"

Life is harsh- there's been a minor apocalyptic event, and while humanity hasn't succumbed to mass chaos, it may well have leaned a bit too far in the opposite direction. Laws and lawmakers have become rigid in the extreme, and as always, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Those who don't agree and do it loudly are quietly removed by the Gasman. He's no longer quite human, having been turned more machine than man from the emotional toll of the job that he does and the invasive gear and toxic gas cocktail he wears.

    a) what is the fauna in question
    b) who is using the altar (general public, a family, priests only etc.)
    c) how to people show their devotion- there will be a "sacrifice" be it incense, flowers, burnt offering, food, the hearts of the natural enemy of the creature in question etc.

This being the case, an alternative method of harvesting fin has been bargained for- a shark may be captured, rendered unconscious, fins surgically removed and a prosthetic replacement attached. This of course, it ridiculously expensive even beyond the thousands of dollars that can be earned from the sale of the meat. To offset costs, the fins have also become aquatic information gathering tools for a variety of sectors including environmental research and sea bed geological ventures being but two examples.

You are to pick a funding sector and design the fin that corresponds. Include a graphic showing how the fin integrates into the shark's body.

IDW 232 – Fedex truck of the future

    Winner: Dayle

Description: There's nothing quite as iconic as a courier service truck, whether it be FedEx, UPS, etc. You are to pick a courier service and design the package/mail delivery truck of the future. Your aim is to transfer elements of current design into the future model to keep it identifiable as having that purpose before any labeling ever occurs. Remember, in many places all that differentiates the FedEx guy from the UPS guy is a magnetic tag on his truck

    IDW 234 – Treasure Chest

    Winner: Draw; Kaspa & Sseal

Description: A fairly common object in video games of all sorts is the treasure chest- it contains goodies (or not) that are needed or valuable in play. Your task this week is to design three treasure chests in a set each showing through the design the potential value of the contents (ie. common, semi-rare, rare). Although treasure chests do not have to look like the prototypical pirate's treasure chest, the first chest must be made of wood. The material for the further chests is open to choice. Please also choose an environment where these chest will reside as well as an overall environment for the game as that should affect the design. Although not necessary, showing how they open/are destroyed to get contents is a valuable exercise.
I suggest you check out an old IDW round: IDW # 84: Destructibles

Description: This week your task is to design what you would love to be buried/burned/ or otherwise stored/disposed as when you die. Egyptian revival?! Spartan simplicity? A never ending lightshow? It's up to you. Keep in mind that this is for yourself, and assuming that we won't be living more than 150 or so years, try to keep technology within what you might expect in about the next 100 years.

    IDW 236 – Scrubbers

    Winner: No Poll (site down)

Description: In space, water is a commodity second only to breathable air. However, with personal space being next to non-existent, bad hygiene is quick route to outbreaks of not only illness, but ill temper. These two factors combine in the question of the best way to shower, or in other words, full body cleaning. One solution is scrubbers (which have applications beyond space), also fondly referred to as a "shower in a bottle". These are nano-tech entities which work as a collective to remove dead surface material and foreign material from the body with minimal use of water. Show us what one variety of these scrubbers look like- include storage when non in use as well as the individual entities.

IDW 237 – Inspired by Speed Laptop

    Winner: No Poll

Description: This round is prompted by my laptop.* Your task this week is to design a laptop case (the bit that holds all the working parts, not a bag) for a "desktop replacement" type computer - think 18" screen - inspired by either a car or plane. These laptops should be designed for current technology standards so some things to keep in mind when designing are things like air intake and output, power source (cable + battery), various ports such as USB etc.
The "inspiration": Asus G73JH which was in turn inspired by a F-117 stealth fighter (not saying it's great design…)

IDW 238 – Planetary Defence- Early Warning Laser Web

    Winner: A-May

Description: In the future, we find out that we aren't the only advanced life in the universe and as such, take steps to defend ourselves from any hostile action on the part of other species with space travel capabilities. In the early days of this era, one of these steps was the creation of a system of laser webs which would act as an early warning mechanism (think space NORAD). A network of outposts would house the laser technology as well as collect further information on space in general. Your task is to show one of these out posts.

IDW 240 – Melted Zombie Cleanup kit

    Winner: Scrt_AgentMan

Description: The era of the zombie apocalypse has arrived, and contrary to past speculation, humanity did not succumb, though it did take quite the beating. Part of the reason for the success of human kind was the engineering genius of an elite group of chemists and biologists who were able to create a spray compound that largely melted diseased muscle tissue. This made is largely safe for non-zombie animals, however the resultant goop is considered a bio-hazard and can toxify groundwater if let be. As a result, a zombie cleanup crew has been assembled in each area- some have cobbled together what they can with available materials, while other groups have received funding to purchase specialized gear. Show a kit for one of these groups. The kit must contain at least three items.

IDW 241 – Redesign Captain Jack’s Vortex Manipulator

    Winner: Stroan

The vortex manipulator is like a time-motor. It requires two components. The first are rods of condensed vortex energy embedded in the body of the traveler, most often in the marrow of the radius and ulna bones of the arm. Around this is wrapped time-conductive coils, with a powered controller attached at the wrist. The device is controlled by manipulating the three dials on the control-face which controls the amount, direction, and duration, of energy that flows through the coils. Much like electricity through copper coils around a magnet induces movement, this process induces a time-flux-field centered around the vortex energy rods, which pulls the rest of the body through time.

The embedded cores leak intense time radiation, degrading the bones. It's a dirty way to travel, but needs must!”

Description: As a Dr. Who fan, and as the newest Doctor has been announced, I thought it was high time we did a related round! This week, your task is to re imagine what Captain Jack's Vortex Manipulator (click for more info) should look like. IDW 242 – Angelic Grimoire

    Winner: No Poll

Description: This week, you are to show us what an angelic grimoire, or magical textbook or sorts, would look like. This book contains instructions on things like the creation of magical talismans, spells, prophecies, charms and other magical miscellanea. Feel free to be creative as to what a textbook can be- have angels adapted to the digital age? To they stay firmly entrenched in the tried and true physical, printed and bound word? It is a compendium of knowledge in another form beyond human ken? The only limitation is that it needs to be physically operable, or at least have a physical manifestation of navigation. For example, I won't allow a single glowing crystal which you simply use your mind to navigate, but I would allow a set of crystals that contain info categorically, and carved/on carved stands where the design indicates content (leaves for natural world, red spirals for emotions or whatever) Clear enough?

It is a dim and dark future where the phenomenon of homeless children roaming the streets has become an everyday occurrence. The narrow, winding back alleys in this grimy city have become the particular domain of the smallest children. Though young and scrawny, they are canny: from the debris around them, they've created protectors oft rash to guard their dens and hoards. These constructs provide the strength and bulk needed to survive not only the ever present adult predators, but also the older kids who look to take over their scavenging treasures and territory. Your task is to show us what one of these alley protectors might look like. You must pick either show a body-guard protector, a territory protector, or a treasure protector.

IDW 249 – Black Market Intergalactic Mail Courier

    Winner: AndrewToth

Description:Intergalactic mail courier services are one of the least glamorous, yet important jobs in the universe. They carry everything from holiday parcels and cards, to declarations of war, and as such have a tacit immunity from pirates and are always granted safe passage through combat areas.Their logo or symbol as a post carrier should be clearly marked on the exterior in order to make sure they are identified as a noncombat and safe vessel.

However, some groups have learned to take advantage of this arrangement. They modify private vessels to imitate legitimate mail service ships in order to move black market goods. This is an extremely dangerous tactic as the runners, the product suppliers, and anyone who worked on the modifications of the ship at any point are all at risk of death sentence if caught. Because of this, modifications almost always include small but powerful hidden weaponry and a high power engine.

IDW 251– Powerhouse of a Lost Civilization

    Winner: Ashess

Description: This week, we are doing a crossover with Character of the Week. This means that both weeklies will have connected topics. You do not have to participate in both categories, though we suggest you do.

Long ago there was an ancient civilization which had in incredibly advanced technology which surpasses anything known at this time. They were a very secluded people, not trusting those outside of their culture with their knowledge, as they feared that it would be misused for destruction. They had the capability to use water to produce power for their society using an intricate set of mechanics (referred to as the water powerhouse for our purposes). The powerhouse is situated near a large lake and waterfall, and has and auxillary"web"which provides power to the rest of the city (think of networks such as, but not limited to aqueducts)

Your taskhow us the powerhouse. It functions through the manipulation of the beautiful, dangerous and fundamentally necessary element of water. How is the power produced, stored and used and how does this affect the design of the basic generator? How would an ancient and advanced culture highlight through design the importance of this machine in their everyday lives?

Reference and Inspiration:To be used loosely as general information. These links do not mean you have to use extant technology, as the brief states that they use technology so far advanced it may as well be magic of a sort.

-I can't find any good pictures of this, but the forge from the Desolation of Smaug. The whole forge is powered by an immense series of water wheels.
